“Get up high!”

Really well worth visiting if you like the outdoors. Find the parking spaces and walk up the track (less than a kilometre to the top, gradual gradient, some uneven footing) for stunning views of Exmoor.

“Easy, short walk with wonderful views”
Reviewed 7 September 2013

This is a very easy walk from the parking area on the road, around 1km on a wide, clear track. 360 degree panoramic views from the beacon.

“Worth a look”
Reviewed 10 August 2013

It's not a day out, but a destination to aim for if you are walking. once you're up there the view on a clear day is quite nice.

“OutstandingViews”
Reviewed 13 July 2013

A challenging walk but worth it, very hot day but we had all day to do it in. The walk is 13 miles and takes about 6 hours. Dunkert Beacon is the highest point on Exmoor. The ascent takes you through Doverhay and HornerWoods to Stoke Pero , a very small Hamlet. The return is an easy and gentle descent. Bossington is a village and one of the prettiest I have ever seen. There are tea shops and toilets in Horner and Bossington

“Great Views”
Reviewed 30 June 2013

This is something of a climb being the highest point in Somerset and with quite a history as one of the beacon chain lit to alert troups to the Spanish Armada. There are also ancient burial mounds up there. The trail is stoney and goes through the low growing moorland vegetation. It also feels chilly because of the exposure and height but that's why the amazing views. It's also a SSSI.
There is a moorland car park, more than one along the road, but we used the nearest at Dunkery Gate.
From here you can see a huge spread of Exmoor,Bristol and English Channel coast, the Brecon Beacons, Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor, the Severn Bridges and even Cleeve Hill in Gloucestershire.
On the way up there were wild Exmoor ponies with their foals, Buzzards and Kestrels. The best time to go is late July/August when the heather is out and the whole area is purple with heather.

It lies just 4 miles (6.4 km) from the Bristol Channel at Porlock. The shortest route of ascent goes from the car park at Dunkery Gate, and is just 0.75 miles (1.2 km) long. There are extensive views from the summit, including both the Bristol and English Channel coasts, the Brecon Beacons including Pen Y Fan, Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor, the Severn Bridges and Cleeve Hill 86 miles (138 km) away in Gloucestershire.
