“Fanstatic Wedding weekend”
Reviewed 22 October 2010

We celebrated our weekend in style at this fabulous Palladian Mansion. We had a big dinner on Saturday for close friends and family and everything went exceptionally well. The food was fanstastic, the staff and service was excellent. The ceremony was efficiently run and we had fantastic support from the staff and wedding co-ordinator. We had incredible weather which meant we could use the outside space which made the day even better. The evening reception was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Those guests that stayed the night had a great time in exquisite rooms and comfy beds that they were sorry to leave the next day. This is a great hotel, a wonderful place for an event and we can't wait to go back again to replay all our memories. It's worth every penny we spent.

I always like to be absolutely fair - so here are the highlights:-

1. the room - absolutely beautiful and I found out (yesterday by checking their website) that I had been upgraded from a standard room, to a superior one (an upgrade of two room types) and the bed was very comfy.
2. Unlike the last person who posted, I found the front of house staff extremely pleasant, attentive and welcoming
3. Breakfast was good with friendly and efficient service and a sublime scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

But there were some real service problems:-

1. as part of my package I had a champagne afternoon tea included. I've had these at other establishments and it's supposed to be about being pampered - so I was surprised that once served the first cuppa - they were off - never to be seen again. Which is when I discovered that I hadn't been provided with a napkin or even a knife to cut the scones open with....and where was the offer of more - two tiny finger sandwiches does not an afternoon tea make!!!

2. Dinner that evening suffered from the same problem - I waited 20 minutes before anyone arrived to ask if I wanted a drink or to see the menu. The food when it arrived (finally at about 9.15pm) was absolutely fine - but to be honest - particularly as I was dining alone - I was completely bored by the whole process by this time.

Timings were significantly better on day two - I'd don't know if they were short handed on the first day - but am I unrealistic in my expectations that (whatever might be going on behind the scenes) the customer should not really be aware?

This is a wonderful hotel in a quiet location and a sedate pace of life. Our room was great, yes the shower head is at a daft height as mentioned elsewhere and you do get some noise from the kitchen extract fan but it did not seem to matter! The experience is great if you go with the flow.

Service for the restaurant is pretty slow and we waited over an hour between arriving to eat and sitting down. The fine dining is a bit hit and miss, the deserts were to die for but the mains were disappointing and honestly, at the price charged, not good enough. The food served off the lounge menu was however great. It was fairly quick and sensibly priced in comparison.

I am guessing that there might be a bit of a kitchen issue because the kitchen garden looks way under used and the meals are 'vegetable light' but if the food was as good as claimed the restaurant would be full, you may not get an easy booking and you might miss out on eating dinner in one of the best dining rooms anywhere.

Would we repeat the experience? absolutely.

Lovely old building that has been sympathetically restored, room were immaculate as were all the public spaces. Girl i=on reception more or less ignore us when we arrived and seem unable to cope with her work load. Was disappointed by restaurant food, main course was cold and service as very very slow. We were tole they had a wedding on in other restaurant, but that hardly helps when your paying quite a lot for what was a pretty average meal. We loved Oscar the hotel dog, BUT why does he have to wear an (illegal) shock collar - really cruel.

We stayed here 2 nights. The common areas were beautiful as were the grounds. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. Beds were extremely comfortable, and baths were luxurious. House and grounds are impeccably maintained. A very hushed tone. Without a car it is a bit confining and too far from Bath for easy sightseeing.

An enjoyable one night stay in this lovely hotel, which seems to be in good condition and well maintained for it's age., with lovely grounds.Staff charming, helpful and not at all pompous, which you so often get in upmarket UK country house hotels.

Food quality very good, although dinner a little too ornate for our taste. However the chef clearly has talent. Extras are expensive, but typical for this quality of hotel. The general area is nice, but not outstanding - hotel is the best thing - although there are interesting places to drive to - as well as Bath, of course

Beautiful country retreat that is close to Bath centre.

We wanted to visit Bath for a quiet weekend break. Most of the hotels in Bath centre were booked up so we went for more of a 'country retreat' style hotel and found this one. We were not disappointed.

It was a beautiful drive to the hotel, gorgeous well kept building and grounds, and the staff were very polite and hospitable. I imagine this would be a lovely intimate location for a wedding as the scenery and building would be a perfect backdrop to wedding photos!

The room was comfortable, clean and had a great view, and very light and airy. It was decorated in a plush 'homely' style, and there were tea making facilities and home-made biscuits (yum yum!). Bed was comfortable, I like a really firm mattress so it was a little too soft for me, but had a good night sleep all the same.

The bathroom was a little on the small side but clean, well maintained and again, had a homely feel to it.

We didn't get a chance to have dinner or breakfast here, but it looked and smelled great! Proper home-style food, very well presented.

They have a drawing room / lounge area with massive plush squishy sofas, books newspapers and magazines. Also drinks and snacks were available (complimentary I think). They also have an old-school style library complete with step ladders, very 'Narnia'.

At the front of the hotel there is a large lawn where you can play croquet and other stuff. If it's a sunny day, take a walk around the gardens at the back of the hotel. There are chairs and benches where you can sit and read/chat/chill. There's a little stream as well, so it's very scenic!

It's about a 25 minute drive into Bath centre, so this is probably not an ideal hotel if you plan to spend a lot of time in the city, or going on a night out in the city. It's perfect for a country get-away or a small wedding.
