“good and bad points”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2012

We booked here for 2 nights on the recommendation of an aquantance. The welcome was lukewarm and the entrance and bar leading to reception dark and dreary.
The room, which was adapted for disabled was large and spacious and the bed was clean and comfy but the room was freezing cold although we did have a convector heater to use.
There were cobwebs and spiders around the walls and the carpet was none too clean. We had a separate room at the back with tv and a couch and table and chairs which would have been nice to use in the summer but not when the cold snap had just started. The draught through the door was biting and the couch blocked any heat from the radiator. We moved the furniture around but it was still freezing so we ended up sitting in the bedroom and watching the telly through the door - when we were in!
The breakfast was good - althought the buffet style promised never materialised and there was no fresh fruit in sight = the waitress was lovely and the man who came to get the telly working was nice to our dog but the rest of the place seemed deserted. It's probably better in the summer. We found a very good pub nearby to eat in the evening having read the earlier reviews. Everyone's ideas are different but I think £80 per night for this standard was not cheap!!

Room Tip: only saw ours so cannot comment

This has got to be the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. Thankfully we were only there one night. The room was dated and smelt musty. When we arrived it was cold as the heating was not turned on until sometime during the evening when we were out eating in what we thought was to be a restaurant. Having booked a table for 7.00 we went over around 6.00 to have a drink in the bar and peruse the menu only to find a very dimly lit bar with no bar staff. ( Lighting was a little like the heating. It wasn't put on until well after guests actually appeared ! ) A member of staff told us someone would be along soon but made no attempt to serve us !! We waited around 15 mins before someone appeared . We eventually found the restaurant - it was in total darkness needless to say ! - and on returning to the bar we were told we could eat in the bar or the restaurant if we wished ! This was at 7.15 ! We ate in the bar. At best the food was average bar food at above average prices. Breakfast was no better. I could continue. My best advice would be to sell to developers for housing. It's actually in quite a nice spot !

I stayed here for the second time the weekend of the 5thand 6th of October. The first time was four years ago and from what I could remember it was fine. I was there along with 20 other people for a get together with friends over from Australia. These were the same friends we were with four years ago to celebrate their daughters Christening there!! I could not believe how this property had gone down hill so much!! I shared a room with two other friends. The room was cold and damp, we had a little electric fan that we could put on but the radiators were off, we had to keep opening the door to keep the damp smell out!!! The rooms were shabby and could do with a refurb. When the came to service the room they took all the towels that were hanging to dry and go,ded them in a pile!! So we then didn't know who's was who's!!! No they didn't change them!!! When we first arrived my friend had to go hunting for someone to say we were here as nobody was on reception!!!
The first evening we told them we would be eating here!! They said they only had one waitress on so service would. Be slow!!! This was a Friday night!!!! Food was ok but nothing special. Breakfast was fine, the first day they decided to make cereal and toast tea coffee etc help yourself but the poor waitress who had worked on her own the night before had to take orders for the hots!!! The second day it was all Buffett!!!
The second night we decided again to eat at the hotel as we were a large party with children and the hotel is a bit out in the sticks. They were shocked and said " We thought you would be eating out tonight"!!! This is a hotel with a restaurant!!!! They had no waitress on so the poor man who had been running the Bar on his own both nights had to also serve us our food in the restaurant!!! No wonder he was always so grumpy!!!!
One of our party when she arrived fell in the dark on the way to the main building from her room and badly sprained her ankle. Had to go to A and E!!! She did this on a warped manhole cover on the footpath in the carpark. There were no lights do it couldn't be seen. The owners attitude stank, was not apologetic and said nobody else had ever done it!!!
This property is still owned by the same people but is under new management!!! The staff are rude and stressed because they are under staffed!!! You cannot run a Hotel know at the weekend you are going to be busy and not have the staff on!!! The whole place needs up dating with a massif refurb!!! Could be a little gem as is set in a lovely area!!! Would not go again unless this happened and they improved their customer service!!!

We had room 55 - which was exceptionally clean, tidy and was nice and war as it had central heating - we shared a bathroom which was very clean but as we were the only ones in that block it did not matter. The facilities on site were also very clean. The breakfast was well cooked and presented - all enjoyed. The staff were very helpful and very friendly - would go back

Room Tip: We stayed in room 55 - was small compact and warm

Spent a midweek break, bed and breakfast, at this hotel in order to visit Cheddar Gorge and surrounding area.
The staff were extremely welcoming and tried to cater for our every need. The food was very good, satisfying and value for money. Free newspapers at the bar, small swimming pool, but sufficient. Very clean rooms well maintained.

Room Tip: All separate lodges, some dog friendly, some not.

Just spent 3 nights here with friends, The reception area could do with a tidy up, but our rooms were lovely and clean, Staff are lovely and Dave (Manager) is doing a fab job of doing all the rooms up to a lovely standard, it is rated as a two star, but in our opinion it should be a three. The men really enjoyed the clay pigeon shoot, while the "Ladies" enjoyed a walk in the sunshine. The bar is a nice place to sit and enjoy a drink. Did not use the pool, but had a good look around and would of used it, if we had more time. Breakfast is very good, no shortage on anything. Could do with 2 hot water urns, not just one because my poor friend ended up with a cold pot of tea as the urn had been topped up and she was not aware of it:-) Dave kindley showed us some of the self catering rooms and I would have been happy to stay in any one of them, and I am fussy.Overall we will go back............

Room Tip: We stayed in 32,34, 35, walls are thin, but did not worry us. Did not use the gym, but it looked fin...

Spent 10 minutes swotting Mosquitos when we got into the room they are everywhere. We stayed in room 18 and it stank of cat pee. There are cobwebs all over the place and we had a massive spider hanging down from the ceiling. The buildings are all ramshackle and the place really needs a good makeover or at least a good clean. Definitely one to avoid!
