“A wonderful retreat with exceptional service.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2011

I stayed with my husband at Cutthorne last month. It is as other reviewers mentioned a little dated but that is absolutely part of its charm. It's simply in a breathtaking location - in a beautiful little valley with its own lake and stunning views all around. The attention to detail in the way the house is looked after is charming. We had fresh cut flowers in our room, a lovingly looked after garden to walk through and all the vegetables we ate whilst there were home grown. The owners and the brilliant Pam work tirelessly to make the place a wonderful retreat. My husband and I went frazzled and came back refreshed. There are lots of lovely walks a short car trip away and the walk round the grounds is memorable too. I simply have to think of the Cutthorne views to relax again. I saw the b & b when it was recommended in a list of Romantic wild getaways in 2008. That's definitely what it is.

If you're looking for comtemporary, plasma and fast living this isn't the place for you BUT if you're looking for a little oasis in the most picturesque and transqul of settings, a warm welcome from friendly people where nothing is too much trouble, where you feel immediately at home then Cutthorne is. 'Old world charm' in abundance and good home grown and cooked fare. My husband and I recently stayed at Cutthorne for a long weekend with our little Westie (who was made to feel very welcome). The area was new to us prior to our visit but we hope to become regular visitors and return soon.

Room Tip: 4 poster is best room but maybe too dark for some

We both enjoyed a relaxing week, under no pressure what so ever. We were able to come and go as we pleased, but the most interesting factor was the different menu we received each night (very important). As long as you can Pam, please keep this up.A very lovely venue in such a pretty area and thanks again for putting up with us. Cheers, Mollie and Richard Parsons

Room Tip: A view from the back of the house, was great.

My partner and I stumbled on this B&B by accident really and what a find. We stayed in the 'Ballroom' which was a cottage attached to the main building (the main building was full up) this suited us and we opted to do breakfast and an evening meal. The cottage was beautiful with a lovely lounge and an open fire if required. We booked fairly late in the day but Pam still managed to rustle up a lovely 4 course meal (cheese board included). There was no menu and were told in the morning what the evening meal would be - a bit scary at first because I am a real foody and love to look through a menu. However we had great home cooked food every evening. Some of it was even home grown where possible. The breakfast was great with something for everyone.
Pam made us feel extremely welcome and couldn't do enough for us. A great place to escape to especially in the Winter months when the open fire would be most welcome. The views were amazing.
The owners were away and Pam worked so hard making our stay a memorable one. Thank you Pam very very much. We enjoyed our stay so much - great food especially the jacket potatoes which I have made several times since!!!lol
And Neil loved the mustard salad leaves. Pam even dug up a plant for us to take home.
A stay we will never forget. Brilliant.

Cutthorne is a very special place and very special people looking after us. Ann and Pam were a fantastic duo and nothing was too much trouble for them! Food, accommodation and location were great! We had forgotton how beautiful Exmoor is. Try it for yourself!

The hotel is situated in and amongst beautiful views of the countryside, with ducks, lakes for fishing if need be. The house dates back to 13th century, so it has a feel of warmth and cosy surroundings with grand father clock chiming in the hall way entrance, as well as log fires, books and board games to competely relax. The service was very friendly and made you feel special in your surroundings. The home grown vegetables tasty and the food excellent. Lots of choices to choose from at breakfast and a lovely surprise awaits you for the evening meal which is all delicious!!

Service:
Polite and helpful, including over the telephone

Location:
Excellent, very quiet. Well maintained and charming grounds.

The Room:
Old fashioned. Comfortable bed and easy chairs. Dark, but to be expected in an old house. Internet reliable. No complaints.

Bathroom:
Adequate. Bath rather small for such a large room. Shower poor - weak water pressure and temperature of water prone to variation depending on usage by other people in the house. Varies from freezing if someone is using the hot elsewhere, to genuinely scalding if someone else is using the cold tap. Could easily burn yourself if you don't leap out the way.

Food:
Breakfast - Above average, 3.5/5. Decent quality bacon. Sausages rather mean sized but of good quality. Egg well cooked and fresh. DIY toast. Stewed fruits and natural yoghurt. Homemade preserves. Bog standard quality orange juice/cranberry - cheap dross from concentrate.

Dinner:
Shockingly overpriced at £23. Extremely basic and unimaginative offering; half a boiled egg with some tinned tuna and a few leaves. Main course comprising a plain piece of chicken, half a jacket potato and a few boiled to death vegetables, with no butter or seasoning. A passable offering, but the quality was really nothing better than an average Sunday carvery. Restaurant quality food would be expected at the price.

I would strongly advise not having dinner here at all. The Woods at Dulverton offers excellent food (for about the same price as here), and The Crown Hotel, 5 minutes drive away, offers surprisingly decent food for half the price.

Conclusion: Good accommodation, very pleasant location. Poor value but edible dinner.
