“A change for the better!”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

Charming picturesque pub, with a thatched roof in lovely village and opposite a pretty little bridge and the ford! We visit the area every year and the first time we tried this pub about 5 years ago we were disappointed so did not return for a while but tried it again this May and all we could say is WOW! Well pleased with the meals and the drinks. The venison was beautifully done, the fish and chips almost defeated my husband, the comfit duck starter was mouth watering, dauphinois potatoes were the best and Jessie the Jack Russell was made very welcome when the owner slipped me a few scampi in a serviette for her on our way out. We shall be making a beeline for the Oak during our visit next year!

We went here for what we hoped would be a special meal, based on the website comments and photos. We were surprised they did not use the dining room but squashed people around tiny fixed tables in a small bar. One couple (almost in our laps) barely had enough room for the plates and drinks on the table. Food was average - OK but not what we expecting. We later learned it is under new management so perhaps teething troubles in its early days - hopefully will pick up!

Stopped here for the first time and had filled rolls with salad and crisps, my husband had beef and horseradish and I had prawn. The food was first class and we will definitely be going again for an evening meal. Staff were very friendly and helpful as well

“Devoid of atmosphere and poor food to boot.”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We were so disappointed with our Sunday lunch here, having heard such good things before.

We were given a good welcome and shown our table in the dining room, but with just us plus one other table, the environment of silence and stuffy tablecloths did not induce a warm atmosphere.

Service was very patchy, at times we had several staff asking the same questions a few times over, then at one point we were left for over half an hour without anyone coming to see if we wanted desert.

Most of us had a Sunday Roast which was fine, but nothing beyond any regular pub. The Cheese board was very poor - an uninspiring selection with only four small dry biscuits to use.

Overall it was a let-down and I would not return here.

“Couldn't ask for more”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

We were spending a couple of nights in Porlock Weir with no restaurant availability on a Monday, so we were delighted to discover this lovely, friendly and customer-focused pub to enjoy a great evening meal. How good to see that much of what is offered is locally-sourced, with details of local suppliers given. Despite being busy, and being a last minute booking, we were very well received and enjoyed some great food. In particular the venison steak and the lamb rump that we chose for our main courses were much enjoyed. It was good to see how busy the place was and how well that level of demand was met. Top marks!
