“Good value stay in a beautiful town near Burton on Trent and Lichfield”
Reviewed 19 December 2012

We stayed at the pub on a Saturday night in early December when the bar and restaurant were busy with festive revellers and this made for a great atmosphere. We were greeted very cordially, despite them being busy, and shown to our room which, although on the small side, was perfectly OK for a night's stay. Please note though, no desk for you road warriors and i would agree with other reviewers that shower/toilet are is small in comparison to most B&B's outside of London. However, the friendliness of the staff more than made up for this and we were very well looked after throughout our stay. There are only three rooms currently available and these have a separate entrance altogether to the pub, so privacy and security are assured.

We did not eat in the restaurant, because we were here for a friend party who lives in the village, but breakfast was marvellous - with the Chef himself serving us. Everything was top notch and delicious. We were also able to choose the breakfast time ourselves as the Chef lives on the premises. In fact I think he is the owner\tenant because he was telling us about plans for 2013 to make the pub even better. I can also say the layout of the restaurant has been cleverly designed with a lounge area around the bar with leather settees and a group of tall tables and bar stools, which leaves the restaurant itself set on it's own with around 40 covers, so it should never be too busy.

The room, restaurant and bar were all very clean and tidy. The choice of Cask Ales was excellent and the local Marston's Pedigree bitter was kept to perfection. My wife also enjoyed having the choice of having Prosecco by the glass and the wine list looked very good.

We paid £70 B&B and would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 3, which was a comfortable double

My mum and step dad stayed here for a few nights recently and I visited whilst they were there. The room they had was decorated very nicely and was spotlessly clean but was quite small and the shower room was tiny. it was obviously designed for the business traveller who uses the shower to wash as the hand basin was one of the very small ones usually found in a downstairs loo so only just about big enough to clean your teeth in. My step dad is disabled and found it very hard to use. Also the rooms are up a narrow and steep flight of steps. for the right kind of traveller the rooms would be lovely but they are not designed for a few nights stay or for elderly/infirm visitors.
the worst experience was in the restaurant. they arrived on a Saturday in the early evening and enquired about eating but were initially told there was no room in the restaurant. my step dad is diabetic and needs to eat regularly so when this was explained the staff said that if mum and he could eat straight away (6pm) that they could eat in the restaurant after all. Mum and step dad decided to do this so sat at the table they were given. Shortly after a man came in to the restaurant and started shouting "what are they doing in here?" and "why have they been allowed to come in here?" and mum and dad were moved out with no offer of eating in the bar area instead or of having something in their room. luckily the restaurant was empty at the time but they were both very upset and embarrassed and then had to go out and find something to eat elsewhere in an area that they don't know. Whilst I appreciate that the man (whoever he was) might not have wanted them there the situation could have been handled much better and in a more customer friendly way.
