“Excellent Staff and Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 February 2014

We managed to pick up a two night deal with 3 course evening meal and breakfast for a very good price, so we were interested to see what the hotel would be like.

As other people have said, the location is somewhat unusual being surrounded by a road on all sides. However, once inside the hotel you would not know that the roads were there.

The room we had was very spacious with what looked like a new bathroom suite that was immaculate. I'm sure the Hotel Inspector or Four in a Bed would have mentioned the condition of some of the paint and fixtures etc. but it really would be nit-picking as the hotel was clean throughout.

The 3 course evening meal that we had on the first night was easily up there with very good restaurant standards, and we went to bed satisfied. The selection and quality of breakfast was also superb both mornings.

As my title suggests, adding that extra special something to our stay were the hotel staff. They couldn't do enough for you and were very helpful for suggestions on places to go and see in the Burton area. Top of that list for anyone with a passing interest in real ale is a visit to the National Brewery Centre, which is a five minute walk from the hotel.

The main shopping centre is approximately 10 minutes walk from the hotel and has a good selection of high street stores and local boutiques to make the visit worthwhile.

All in all we had a great weekend in Burton upon Trent, and we would have no hesitation in staying at the hotel again for a return visit.

Enjoyed our weekend in this dated hotel although deco looked a little tired we had a clean tidy spacious room. Staff could not do enough for us and Breakfast and Evening meal most delicious.
The only downfall is where it is situated on an island with roads all around it. Many thanks to everyone at The Queens

Recently spent 2 nights at this hotel we were made very welcome by staff. Our room was really nice and comfortable all usual amenities in room. We had 3 course dinner in the restaurant which costs about 17 pound but it was very very nice. Very good value hotel even though it is a bit dated. The room was spotlessly clean I could nt find fault with it. Not alot going on this time of year in burton but some great pubs to visit. We also went on a brewery tour which was very good with a pint of the best at the end of it.its not far from the hotel so its well worth a visit. Overall a very enjoyable break at the queens.

Room Tip: We had room 35 which was a large room with large bed at back of hotel so quiet.

My wife & I have just returned from a Living Social Break at The Three Queens and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is a little gem of a hotel tucked away in a historic part of the country that is well worth a visit. Situated in the centre of a roundabout / one way system, it is ideally located for both the local town and Brewery. I must be congruent and say that from the outside, the hotel looks tired and it is in dire need of re-decoration. Indeed, the “kerb appeal” just isn’t there and I expect that this is down to the previous owner declaring bankruptcy and therefore the hotel appearance was neglected in favour of more important things. I dare say that this also goes for the inside of the hotel that also has dated decoration. Nevertheless, the new owner is working hard to address these issues and I guess that as part of the hotel dates back to the 1600 hundreds, the cost of adding those aesthetic touches would come at premium costs.
On arrival we were greeted warmly by the receptionist who directed to our "Executive Double" Room (33), which is in the main part of the hotel. It was tucked away at the end of a tight corridor in the old part of the hotel and on opening the door we saw what we expected. A warm, comfy and acceptable room with everything you could wish for. It was also very quirky, with high ceilings and eccentric touches such as the offset picture that overlapped the edge of the chimney! The bed was a double and very soft; not something that suits me as an individual, but my wife was more than happy. The large bathroom was also around the same size as the room with plenty of hot water and fluffy towels. Indeed, the room had everything you could wish for, including a trouser press and kettle with plenty of hot drink makings.
Only one whinge is that Wifi is an "optional extra" in the rooms, but free in the main areas of the hotel. I personally feel that in this day and age, this should be complimentary in all hotels. The "Q" entertainment system in the rooms can be purchased for £12,50 for 24 hrs, or you can elect to pay as you go for individual items such as a film. Not something we used as there are enough Freeview channels to watch for those times you are in your room.
As part of the deal we also had dinner included and went down to the restaurant on our first night. The menu was short and very basic and at £17,50 for 3 courses you get what you pay for to be honest. A premium of £6 - £9 will get you a steak and for £6 I actually ordered a rump steak; it was average and I believe frozen. Nonetheless, the restaurant staff were excellent and couldn’t do enough for us. Indeed, instead of a sweet I asked if it was possible to order a cheese board and a substantial plate of cheese balanced with enough biscuits, grapes and a salad was promptly delivered. As for breakfast, excellent, simply excellent; I cannot say anymore.
All in all I would say that The Three Queens is a good 3 Star Hotel and the new owner is working hard to get it up to scratch and promote it. It certainly has a good history that I believe should be investigated and published / advertised alongside the hotel. A good re-decoration and themed overhaul of the bar and restaurant could see the hotel flourish, especially if a theme alongside its true history was utilised. A Coach–House, real ale (tankards) and grill with good aged steaks / chicken / fish would suit the hotel well and no doubt attract walk in customers and retain guests that look to eat out. The only downside being this would of course cost money and a lot of investment. I guess what doesn’t help the hotel restaurant is the fact that three excellent restaurants are all within walking distance. They are all packed out over the weekend, unlike its own restaurant that was very quiet; food for thought here as well.
This is a hotel that is well worth looking at and for me, better than the featureless Chain Hotels that are springing up. We should all support local businesses and help keep them afloat, especially ones that are steeped in history and have their own quirkiness and individuality. This is one of those little gems that I am glad we found, explored and enjoyed. Give it a go, as I said its better than Premier inn etc.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main hotel, the 2 Hundreds are supposed to be haunted. Expect creaks and groa...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am pleased to hear that the staff anticipated your needs & made the extra effort to offer things that were not on our daily menu, our ethos is always about putting the guest first & making their stay as enjoyable as possible. We are in the process of installing wifi around the building at the moment as we do realise that it is a standard requirement not only of our business guests but those on leisure breaks too, we hope you will find the time to visit us again soon

Came home yesterday from a lovely 2 night Living Social deal here! We really enjoyed it, and the value for money was absolutely top notch! We were allocated the Mary suite which was lovely....old fashioned (as expected) but very clean and an up to date bathroom with fluffy white towels, and lashings of hot water! The only little niggle here was the mattress which was rather lumpy, with springs coming through that weren't conducive to a good nights sleep! Either needs replacing or a jolly good mattress topper!!

As part of the deal a 3 course meal was included in The Grill Room on the first night. This was absolutely delish! Huge portions, well cooked and presented and served to us by a lovely waitress called Amy! She was an absolute delight....friendly, helpful and efficient! Our breakfasts were also great! Fresh, tasty and excellently cooked! Lisa was also a credit to the Three Queens. Friendly, chatty and helpful at all times.......however there were one or two other ladies in the breakfast room who gave the impression they would far rather be somewhere else!!

Overall the service was totally great from reception to bar, and we thoroughly enjoyed our little getaway! Would recommend!!

We stayed for a weekend with a Livingsocial voucher, which was an absolute bargain. It is most definitely a three star hotel, a little worn around the edges but more than made up for by the fantastic staff and good food. Our room was spotlessly clean, not quite what I expected for an 'executive double' but great for the price. Breakfasts are freshly cooked and plentiful, the restaurant does beautiful food at night although the portions are rather small. The National Brewery Centre is just down the road and is a really interesting half day out. The pub across the road is a free house and a real ale drinker's delight. Jee Ja Jee's is an excellent Indian restaurant almost next door. Ten minutes drive to the National Memorial Arboretum which is also worth a visit - but bring your walking shoes! All in all a great weekend.
