“An accommodating Sunday meal”
Reviewed 27 January 2014

Backpacking around the Peak on a very wet & cold weekend, I sought Sunday lunch in Castleton. Looked at 4 or 5, the George looked good value.
Great welcome, "bring your stuff in to dry a bit", "sit by the fire". The lad who served me even gave me route advice for the afternoon (if he reads this, it still took 2h30m because of the ice)
Lamb & blackpudding pie - yummy. Well-presented beers and strong coffee. Can't fault it. Enjoyed the banter about the barmaid's shorts - do not plan a visit specially to see; she has just left for Australia!

Called in today ( Sunday ) evening for a meal whilst visiting Castleton to see the lights and do some Xmas shopping. Service was excellent, good range of cask ale. I had the steak and kidney pudding which was excellent. I was very pleased with the size and quality of the kids meals. Three adult meals , 1 kids and 2 rounds of drinks £52 so decent value too,

We went to Castleton for a trip out with friends and after looking round a few places to eat we felt this was the best one to go for and so GLAD we did.
We all opted for the Christmas Faye Menu at just £15 !!!!
All of us had the very tasty Potatoe& Leek Soup which came with a good sized bread WARM roll this was a meal on its own so much of it and left you thinking if that's the starters what is the main meal going to be like ???
2 of us had the roast beef it came with 4 big thick cut slices 6 roasted potatoes,a medium sized Yorkshire pudding plenty of gravy plus a selection of mixed vegetables, and 2 of us had Turkey with ALL of the above.
The beef was something again so very tasty and melted needed no chewing im glad to say as im a butcher so i always take note of any meat i have out in pubs etc.
The Turkey dinner was just as nice.
We still had deserts to follow once again you just got talking how good this place was value for money and such quality on your plate.
For deserts we had a massive choice to pick from so went for :
Chocolate Fudge Cake, Mint & Chocolate Cheese Cake, Christmas Pudding,Chocolate Gateaux the portions were really big and so very nice to.
The selection of beer and drinks was first class as well, the staff were as pleasure and all came to see if everything was ok for us.
You can not PICK ANY FAULT WITH THIS PUB at all, we have seen some of the reviews from people on here and think they are VERY RUDE in what they have wrote and im sure if it was there pub they would not like to see such negative comments.
We will for sure be going back here again in the New Year for another super meal.
This is another 10/10 vote for us.

We enjoyed our stay at the George. The rooms are dated and need a bit of tlc, but they are clean and our room was spacious. For the price you cant grumble though. The pub is lovely, friendly with a huge fireplace. The hosts are very welcoming. We had meals and breakfast, all we're lovely. Would stay here again.

Booked in for one night visiting relatives nearby. Cold outside, but nice warm atmosphere inside, cosy wood fire in the bar and room very comfortable & quiet. A good nights sleep and filling cooked breakfast to start the following day. We will be back.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 5 - four poster bed, creaky floor, but nice & quiet

We arrived Friday afternoon and was greeted with a warm welcome from the staff and a roaring fire. Our room was tidy, clean and comfortable. We ate here and the food was excellent, good portions too! All the staff were very friendly and nothing was any problem at all. The breakfast was also excellent. We would not hesitate to stop here again and highly recommend it. The landlord was very friendly and approachable.

On a cold, wet and windy November day this was the perfect place for lunch. Traditional pub, roaring fire, friendly staff and a delicious rabbit pie :) Lovely light pastry and so tasty. Just be aware that the portions are not for the faint heated, they are very substantial. These are not the grab and go sort but they are ideal for a leisurely lunch.

Don't know where Ann T went, can only think she must have been in a different pub and village entirely.
