“Really Fantastic Stay”
Reviewed 24 May 2011

Fantastic hotel/pub. We stayed in what looked like a cottage extension, the room was clean comfortable and homely. The food at the pub can't be faulted and service was excellent. Breakfast was great and cooked to your liking, there is also cereal, toast etc available. The staff are friendly and helpful as are the locals in the pub. Half an hour drive to Alton Towers. Its set in a beautiful village near the private Repton School. I cannot fault this place and if i am heading that way i will definitely return to Unicorn Inn. Thanks for a fab stay.

We stayed at this lovely little country village pub/hotel/restaurant in very snowy conditions. The staff were very helpful, showing us to our room straight away on arrival. The room was spacious and warm - apparently the rooms have been done up recently and it looked freshly decorated, with all the usual facilities and plasma tv. There's free wifi on site, I just had to ask at the bar for the password. It looks like this is a lively pub - there were posters fr beer festivals they've had in the past. Despite the dreadful weather, there was a clutch of friendly regulars who were happy to chat. There is an extensive menu with fresh ingredients, quite reasonably priced thjough don't expect four-quid-a-plate pub grub because it's a bit more upmarket than that. The cooked breakfast was lovely too.

Stayed here for two nights in September as it was close to Burton on Trent where I had a seminar to attend. Room was spacious, extremely comfortable and breakfast was fantastic.
A nice little bar that serves food and it also has a small restaurant which I ate at the second night of my stay and this was very good too. All in all, the whole stay was really good value for money.
Will definitely book again when I'm staying over that way.

We chose this small country pub over the larger 'faceless' Ramada hotel located in the same village and we were glad we did! On arrival we were shown to a clean bright room in 'the cottage' (there were some rooms alongside the pub and some in a cottage at the rear of the building). The bed was comfortable with lovely fresh bedding and the bathroom was more than adequate for our needs. The pub had an excellent range of cask ales and the restaurant although small, is very nicely decorated and the food was delicious and plentyful! During the evening, the bar was full of locals who made us feel very welcome and the staff were pleasant and helpful. The village itself is very pretty with lovely riverside walks and it is just a short hop from Burton on Trent and for serious shoppers, Derby with it's new 'Westfield' shopping centre is about 20 minutes away by car. We would definitely stay at this small village hotel/pub again and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

I used the Unicorn for a couple of nights while visiting the area for a wedding. The room was pleasant enough and clean, the food in the resaurant was excellent and the draught beers were good and appeared to change regularly (there was a list of about a dozen beers for future weeks). The village was quiet and the pub is only a five minute walk from the Trent where it was possible to walk along the bankside for a couple of miles in either direction.
A better smoking area would be an improvement.

We were shown our room and were disappointed to find that one of the beds, we requested a twin room, was in fact a soffa bed! What was worse was that the bed linen had not been changed since the last occupier. The towels too were past there sell by, the bathroom had rusty fittings and a lot of mould around the bath. The hotel is situated in a pretty village but still has a through put of traffic so not as tranquil as one would have liked. The restaurant was small with dated decor and the food average. The whole place could do with some updating but at least a thorough clean. At breakfast, food that had dropped on the floor from the night before was still present. The full english breakfast was adequate but arrived too quickly to have been freshly prepared. If this visit was being rated then it would loose out on 3 stars as the list of minor omissions was too extensive. Would I stay there again, no. I would rather spend the extra and book into the Newton Park Hotel just up the road.

Great little place for very good value. Only paid £50 B+B for a single room.
Room was adequate and clean but nothing special and a bit noisy.
Food was good and breakfast very good. Free WiFi. I will stay there again.
