Stayed at the Unicorn Inn for a Wedding in the village, serve great food and ales. Staff are very friendly as at the locals, felt like the real heart of the village. Rooms were comfortable and clean, rates included breakfast which was also if excellent quality.
Would totally recommend the Unicorn Inn.

(Restaurant review only.) We've eaten here on numerous occasions as we can walk there from our house in the next village. This occasion was our wedding anniversary, and we decided to try it again as we had heard it was under new management since we last went. Previously we had thought one or two of the waiters were a bit brusque and the menu was often in really lousy French which rather let it down when the cuisine was good. Why not use English if you can't be bothered to get it checked; it just looks over-pretentious!

However, this time the food was still great, a good choice on the menu and all in suitable size portions and very tasty, and the waiter couldn't have been more helpful. My husband was well into his pea and ham soup when he realised that actually he had ordered tomato and red pepper! (And he's not colour blind.) Never mind, he said, it's very nice anyway. He mentioned it when the waiter appeared with the next course but said it didn't matter at all. The waiter was most apologetic, the chef came out later and apologised again, and then they didn't charge us for the soup. The rest of the meal was equally excellent, and we had room for three courses, wine and coffee, and the total bill was about £30 per head.

It's a small place, only about 20 covers, but somehow they manage to make you feel you have enough space to talk without everybody else listening in, and it isn't too noisy from wooden floors or loud music. The road is outside but you don't really notice the traffic either. The menu is much more in English now, just still one or two minor slips in the occasional French- or Italian-labelled dishes - I know I'm pernickety about these things, and they don't seem to matter to other people, though!

We'll definitely be back.

Popped in for Sunday lunch after a great walk in the area so I can only comment on the food which was fantasic. Roast Lamb needs a special mention as it melted in the mouth, butter mash and crispy roasties. Nicely cooked veg. Service was friendly and quick.

I did not stay at the Unicorn - this review is only for the food. Pub had a beer festival on and therefore busy, although restaurant empty. Food dreadful! Prawn piri piri - frozen prawns in boiling water with a bit of chilli. Wilted asparagus - boiled not grilled. Soggy haddock fishcakes, with no haddock! Stuffed flat mushrooms, just grilled cheese on mushrooms. £50! Just awful - do not go near the place!

Fantastic hotel/pub. We stayed in what looked like a cottage extension, the room was clean comfortable and homely. The food at the pub can't be faulted and service was excellent. Breakfast was great and cooked to your liking, there is also cereal, toast etc available. The staff are friendly and helpful as are the locals in the pub. Half an hour drive to Alton Towers. Its set in a beautiful village near the private Repton School. I cannot fault this place and if i am heading that way i will definitely return to Unicorn Inn. Thanks for a fab stay.

We stayed at this lovely little country village pub/hotel/restaurant in very snowy conditions. The staff were very helpful, showing us to our room straight away on arrival. The room was spacious and warm - apparently the rooms have been done up recently and it looked freshly decorated, with all the usual facilities and plasma tv. There's free wifi on site, I just had to ask at the bar for the password. It looks like this is a lively pub - there were posters fr beer festivals they've had in the past. Despite the dreadful weather, there was a clutch of friendly regulars who were happy to chat. There is an extensive menu with fresh ingredients, quite reasonably priced thjough don't expect four-quid-a-plate pub grub because it's a bit more upmarket than that. The cooked breakfast was lovely too.
