“Room for improvement”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2014 via mobile

We booked last minute to stay over after a family visit to Alton Towers on Bank holiday Sunday, the hotel is quite a kookie little place with lots of character, four poster beds etc, it has a nice cosy bar lounge area, we were looking for a Thai restaurant to eat that night, so we thought we had struck lucky when the guy on reception told us the dining area doubles up as a Thai restaurant, only when I asked to book a table was I informed that it was closed on Sundays. We ate Mr Woo's Chinese (which was great), the wife and I don't get out much so I was looking to tuck the kids in and have a nightcap back at the hotel bar, only to find it locked up (at 10.15pm on a bank holiday Sunday).

We got up for breakfast (which was not included in the price) it was the same guy that worked on reception that also worked behind the bar, he also cooked breakfast, so no wonder he had shut the bar up early the night before, he was pleasant enough, I asked if he was the proprietor to which he replied he was just "the general dogs body" I felt a bit sorry for him so I gave him a tip when I left.

So although it was a bit rough and ready and we paid extra for breakfast (which was nice) it still worked out good value (£25 per head for a family of five) it was a pleasant stay, if the owners invested a bit more time and effort it could be a great stay.

One thing to also note; the rooms I booked online were nearly twice as expensive on the Saturday as they were on the Sunday when I stayed. I would have been more disappointed and scored it lower had I paid the premium rate.

We stayed here on 15th and 16th August 2014 so that we could attend a wedding not too far away, by accident I came across "tripadvisor reviews" and they give an appalling impression of The Bank House, but our impressions were VERY different, we found the staff very friendly and helpful (especially Richard and Mary) and nothing was too much trouble for them. Breakfast was excellent and plenty of it. We had Room No1 was very good. some areas of the hotel could do with a little TLC but this applies to a lot of ordinary short stay hotels of this type. The hotel is very old and the furnishings are appropriate. My wife's first check in any hotel bedding and bathroom cleanliness and it passed with flying colours. As for position of the car park, remember the the hotel was there before the public car park was built. I would suggest a makeover was given to the very small reception area, as first impressions count

Room Tip: Rear rooms are quieter re church bells

After a 5 hours drive we arrived at the hotel. The car park was full and we had to leave the van in the carpark outside, however this was fine as it was free to park when we got there.

in the garden/carpark of the hotel there was a large group of people who appeared to be celebrating a 21 birthday and the fisrt thing I saw was one of the boys of this group going for a wee up against the wall! Great start im sure youll agree.

We went in the main entrance and into what looked like the resturant and was apprached by a thai lady we tried to explain that we needed to book in to our room and she didnt understand then a voice from the pub called though and told us to go into there and we were then asked to follow them to the reception area.

We were given our room key and told that our room (9) was on the top floor. going up the stairs we were greeted with a rather odd smell, it was musty and damp with a hint of stale food. We found our room.

The room was very small, the wardrobe is behind the tv cabinet that you cant walk past without knocking it over! we were only staying one night and decided not to unpack. the bathroom was ok although there was only and shower and no bath. the shower is a good foot off the ground and has a low ceiling a tall person would struggle in here. The bath mat appears to be made out of duvet matieral and it there fore evry odd to stand on when wet. We also only had half a roll of toilet roll in the room we were not expecting to need more but it would have been nice to have it there, as its not nice to have to go routing through a hotel looking for it.

We went to Mr Woos chinese resturant for dinner which was the best bit of our stay and nothing to do with the hotel.

We went to go to bed to discover that the window in the room only opened about 5cm, it was a very hot evening an the room was stiffling, we took the duvet off of the bed and decided to sleep with only a sheet. The room appeared to get hotter and hotter as the night went on at 3 am my husband decided to try and find a fan for our room, there was no one to be found and all of the doors downstairs to the communal areas were locked. In the end my husband resorted to a shower at 3 am to cool down. There was a note on reception to wake up the night porter in their room, my husband did not feel comfortable doing this as it was not an emergency.

To add to all this there is a lovely church over the road. it is a lovely looking building but sadly there is a big clock outside that chimes every 15 mins all night long. The logest amount of sleep i got in 1 go was about 10 mins.

The following morning we went to breakfast, this was ok nothing of note to say either way about it.

Upon check out we were told that we had only booked a room for 1 person and breakfast was not included, my husband then told him that he was quoted £76 for the night bed a breakfast he then said yes this is correct but you only booked a single room. I advised that we had both stayed and we would pay for both, he then charged us £76...... Not sure what his problem was.

He asked how our stay was and we said that we had not slept well due tothe heat and the noise. He then said that it is bad at the top of the hotel! We suggested that they put fans into the rooms and he advs that they did this last year but they all got stolen.

There was no apology for the bad night that we had. I am not expecting them to make it cooler outside but something to help inside would have been good. I do not feel the service we had was of any quality and it appeared to be run by bar staff with a hotel as a side line. Maybe they need to focus on one venture not 3.

I would not stay here again and would not reccommend anyone else to stay there.

Had an overnight stay here in a lovely 4 poster bed, very comfortable and had an excellent night's sleep. The bathroom facilities were also brilliant, lovely full-sized bath with towels and shower gels included!
TV in the room as well as tea and coffee making facilities, was very welcoming - the staff were also very friendly and helped us with all our enquiries, very easy booking and a nice place to stay!

The hotel is very central and well placed for the Acoustic Festival held at the racecourse. The staff were friendly and helpful and have no complaints about the way we were treated during our three day stay. The room was lovely with a four poster bed. Bathroom very clean. Parking is good, well lit and secure.
We had lovely breakfasts too. I can recommend this hotel and we have our names down to stay again during next years festival.

The location was perfect for work that evening and the free parking was a plus... Once you found it around the back through the public car park. Receptionist on was a waste of space, very hostile, miserable, no customer service at all, rolling her eyes at things and huffing. Very off putting! Rooms are lovely and spacious, and very clean. Comfy beds. Can't complain about the facilities really. Went for a meal at the thai on site which was a nightmare. Took a good ten minutes to be seated as the waitress was sitting on her phone in the back and didn't look up, took ages to take our even though she hung around watching in the corner to see if we were ready (made us feel uncomfortable) and then once shed cleared our plates she disappeared to the back without asking about desserts bill etc. After waiting over 20 mins we eventually gave up and went to find her, she was cleaning the kitchen oblivious to her guests sat at the table. Food was really good but definitely not the lacking service. Wouldn't eat there again, and probably wouldn't stay here again because of the way we were treated, which is a shame because of the excellent rooms.
