“Absolutely Lovely!”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

My daughter (14 months) and I stayed in 'Willoughby' for the weekend while visiting family in the area. Our stay could not have been nicer. From the moment we arrived we were both made to feel very welcome and every member of staff we met went out of their way to attend to us. The food and drink were all lovely and they did a great job catering for the little one (top tip if you go with a very little one - in the restaurant ask to sit at the chalkboard table - my baby can't quite handle paper and pens but she loved colouring right onto the table with chunky chalks).

The bar is comfortable and friendly, and the staff quick and attentive. Especially Sam on reception and Amber - who was an absolute godsend in the mornings when she entertained baby for a few moments so I could take a fews sips of hot coffee in peace.

Despite the possible aspersions cast by the room's name, it was perfectly charming, comfortable and quiet. The only downside (and I didn't mention this to the management who may have been able to remedy it), is that the room smelled a bit of chips as it is right above the kitchen and the windows were wide open because of the weather. There also isn't a shade in the bathroom so the room was rather bright in the mornings - though not a problem for us as my daughter is an early riser!

Both of the above are really very minor points and I only make them so that I don't sound too gushing! But really B & the D is very, very lovely. Not 'budget' but worth every penny. Can't wait for an excuse to visit the family and stay again!

Room Tip: Willoughby is sold as a single, but was very adequate for one adult and a cot.

Stayed with my wife using hotel points from an online booking company so effectively our room was a freebie so only paid cash for the meals/drinks. In order, parking great around back of hotel, check in excellent got showed to our room, offered to carry bags, shown the freebie coffee making facility and the great touch of couple of freebie whiskies, some people have mentioned 'small room' but ours (note all named after Pride and Prejudice characters) was perfect. Almost Hotel du Vinish if readers known what I mean. Lovely colours, well dressed, books all over the place, flat screen TV but not 'over--sized, big bathroom/shower only, with fluffy towels and selection of soaps etc. Mobile signal is very poor (great heeehee) but compensated by FREE landline phone usage, nice touch. Super garden, safe great for kids, outside lunch pizzas. Bar cosy, reasonable value house wines, even offered a FREE mojito that barstaff had accidentally made twice for someone else (wife very happy with that). Had pre-booked table restaurant table, good decision as they were fully booked. Had table all evening so no rush to get us turned over. Excellent modest sized menu with a special also. We chose duckegg, avo, parma ham, starter mussels in cider/cream sauce (huge portion for starter) with crusty bread. Followed by superb fillet steak perfectly cooked to order and prawn/chorizo/bean cassoulet dish. Simply no room for pud. Try the unusual Argentinian/Patagonia Malbec 14.5% just wonderful. Sleep was pefect, freebie coffee in the morning followed by excellent breakfast, not full English style each cooked to order. All in all simply perfect, oh except kitchen is open so can see the chefs working which is great except when they prepare the Sunday lunch suckling pig in full view when eating your crispy bacon at breakfast !!! :-)

Stayed over for 1 night in the family room. Room had king size bed and king size sofa bed. Ensuite had both bath and shower. The BAth had soap and shampoo but the shower just shampoo and conditioner (that needs changing). Excellent value, excellent room, excellent staff. We will be back! Thank You.

Everything we wanted and more. Comfortable and spacious room. Bar service was good and food in restaurant was outstanding. Splashed out on a great bottle of claret - well worth it! We will definitely be back.

I really wanted to like this place as I had read so many good reviews.

I was not disappointed.

Friendly staff, easy check in, fantastic food in the restaurant, free wifi, stunning room and a yummy breakfast. It was refreshing not to have to plough through a full English and the pancakes were more than enough.

Why would you not stay here? nope - can't think of a single reason and we would definitely return if in the area.

Like the last review, we stayed one night and came to very similar conclusions. Very friendly staff-if a little short-handed. Barman had to go to find someone to check us in and the same girl seemed to be doing several jobs at breakfast the next morning. Good coffee in the corridor alcove and complementary whiskey in there too, as well as the damson vodka in the room, were lovely touches. We were there on Wednesday so we were able to have pizzas from the pizza oven in the garden, very nice. Disappointing breakfast choices, given how good the menu seemed to be for evening meals. Surely a full English breakfast shouldn't be beyond a place like this? Bill was wrong in the morning-we had to tell them what we had eaten the night before and were very surprised to find 10% service charge added to both the food and the drink from the bar. I never like it when service charge is added automatically and you have to ask if you want it removed. However, we would happily go there again!

We stopped one night and there was so much that was nice and so much that could have been better. The room was very nice with a lovely comfy bed and complimentary sloe gin in the room.
Tea and coffee was avilable from a small alcove down the corridor as was complimentary malt whisky, a nice touch.
There were a few downsides to our room. We did not sleep well but this was probably because it was a hot stormy night although there was road noise with the window open. My wife also complained there was no plug for the hairdryer anywhere near a mirror. Also the bathroom window which was adjacent to the main road had no blind just a frosted square in the middle which was not much good when a double decker bus stopped outside.
Breakfast was very disappointing. We entered the dining room and there was no one to greet us and very little choice other than 3 cereals and toast and help yourself to coffee on view. When somebody did come we were offered a choice of egg & bacon, a bacon sandwhich or pancake. We've had far better breakfast choice at a cheap B&B. We chose bacon and egg which was 2 eggs and 2 tiny rashers of bacon. On the plate were also 2 large chunks of white bread(we later found we could have had brown but this was not offered) and unbelievably lambs lettuce. We will not stop there again.

Room Tip: Away from the main road
