“Surprise 60th birthday dinner”

Great evening at Chalk Lane Hotel which is tucked away in Epsom and feels like it should be a secret only shared with those you really like. The staff was really attentive and personable with just the right measure of humour (and played along with the surprise). Food was delicious. All in all a fabulous evening.

Stayed here for 2 nights on business, location is very good for Epsom Downs I walked up to the racecourse and over the downs one evening. The hotel
itself is more B&B than Hotel , it has an old world charm to it if that's your thing.

I had a single room booked for me so double rooms may be much different. The single room was small, didn't have much of a view and a small tv. Due to room size the bed was against a wall which I do dislike but maybe I'm just strange that way. The bathroom was almost as big as the room and was perfectly acceptable.

The breakfast has a cold buffet, all hot items were cooked to order which was nice and preferable to most hot plate breakfasts.

Overall the hotel was fine, I wouldn't go out my way to stay again but certainly wouldn't dismiss it entirely.

The hotel is situated in a cul de sac and although a few minutes walk to the centre of Epsom and good public transport and road links to many popular locations one of the loudest noises was the sound of birdsong. It is an old building and has been extended several times so not for those who want predictable uniform and uninteresting layout and ambience. Yet it has modern conveniences like free Wi-Fi (get a pass for each device) where this has not been avaialble or very pricey for a short term connection at several big name chain hotels where I have stayed.
The service is Old World and several have rightfully written about it being charming. Your comfort and convenience is a priority and the tone is friendly without being intrusive.
There is free car parking at the hotel (once again the central chains would charge extra -if it was available- making their "budget price" poorer value for the money).
Breakfast was included in the tariff and it was also of excellent quality with choices of cooked dishes as well as the cold continental style buffet. Several people wanted combinations not on the menu and they were all catered for with good grace and promptly. The cooked dishes are obviously cooked to order and brought to you when ready.
It is possible to have food and drink served in the reception/lounge area and there is a fair room service menu. Portion sizes are certainly not nouvelle cuisine although the tastes and presentation is similar to this style.
I have hesitated to write this report as I almost wanted to keep this treasure to myself, but I won't be able to visit as often as I would like and felt that others should find out about this country-side feel (woken by the sound of horses walking along the lane) charming individual hotel that treats you as an individual and honoured guest.

Room Tip: If room size and facilities is important to you speak to the hotel directly and it is probably worth...

If you fed up with chain hotels which look the same everywhere, this small hotel looks like a family-run B&B, with chain hotel professionalism. Old fashioned deco, but it really looks like old England (for a French visitor at least). In 2014, the bill is still hand-written, but it participates to its charm, while Wifi is available for free and all modern methods of payment accepted.
I would probably not come here for vacation, little to see or do around, and central London is pretty far away. But if your business takes you to this south London area, it's probably the best choice around. The restaurant is really excellent.

This hotel is a bit more like a B&B than a hotel, but charming and with excellent service. The rooms are charming albeit small and not super modern. Still, WIFI worked very well and breakfast was very good. I was here for work, but think this is ideally suited to vacation travel. Still I would come back next time I'm here for work. A change from the usual anonymous places we business travelers have to suffer.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights to attend a wedding nearby.
The Room:
We booked a small double room which they should have called a tiny double room. The room was quaint and cute, but the bed was very small, very hard and on rollers so would move when you get in and out.
The Bathroom:
The bathroom was very small. There wasn't enough room in the shower to bend over...so don't drop the soap! The hot water would only come through after running the tap for 20 minutes and the water pressure was terrible.
The Food:
Breakfast was the best thing about the hotel. It was impressive with a continental buffet and then a good selection of hot options made to order. Dinner was lovely, but overpriced as were the bar drinks.
Overall, the hotel was lovely, but not worth the price paid which has really lowered my opinion of the place. I'm sure there would be better options nearby for the same price.

This was a business trip, and so long and busy days were the norm. After the first week, it was a gorgeous Saturday, mild and without a cloud in the sky, and I had planned an outing to Greenwich, a rare tourist-y day during business travel. Unfortunately, I was so exhausted that I stayed in bed. The staff had not seen me, and so they called and checked a couple of times. The second call got me out of bed in the evening, in time for dinner. I felt well cared for, and not so lonely on a business trip.

The rooms are quirky, smallish, but comfortable. My room overlooked a courtyard and garden, so I had a calming view while working. Wi-fi worked fine. The restaurant downstairs is excellent, though a bit pricey. Service in the hotel was wonderful. Restaurants in Epsom are a pleasant short walk away. Just be prepared for a bit of drizzle.

During my stay, I saw several family events, that seemed to flow smoothly among private dining, outside patio, and sitting areas. The staff were very helpful to the elderly guests.

Note, I don't see that this is a wheelchair friendly place. One has to negotiate stairs for almost every destination. But again, the staff is very helpful.
