I have stayed several times at the Chalk Lane Hotel so I thought it was about time I wrote a short review of it. I grew up in Epsom but haven't lived there for over 35 years and although the town itself seems to have become much more seedy than it used to be now that charity shops have replaced the classy ones of yesteryear, there is one fabulous oasis left in the form of the Chalk Lane Hotel.

Ably run by Stephen McGregor and his excellent staff, a stay there is really a pleasant experience. The rooms are small but perfectly comfortable and the bathrooms well equipped. The best feature of course is the restaurant and the friendly welcome and service offered by Cecilia who I was pleased to find was still there as she had been when I visited on a previous occasion at the end of 2011. I had dinner one evening which was excellent as was the breakfast cooked to order which is great as I hate buffets. Short but well selected wine list too.

Highly recommended.

Have just returned from a 90th birthday celebratory lunch for 30 people in the restaurant. The food, service, ambience were superb, I understand a few staff had not turned up today but you would never have known. If you have never dined here put it on your to do list.

Stayed here last year for a function and was impressed and looking forward to this years, Arrived a little early but was still shown to my lovely room, lovely until you opened the windows! The room was above the kitchens right next to the extractor fan and directly above the fan itself. What a din and what a smell, whatever they were cooking was not served up later! Spent 30 mins in the room and had to visit the bathroom, well layed out, all mod cons and a throbbing vibration from below, unbearable. Spoke to the manager about it who asked the kitchen staff to turn the fan down, the vibrations dulled a bit but the food smell didn't go away. Despite assurances the fans would be turned off at 10pm and would not be used again until the following afternoon we asked to move anyway. To be fair they arranged a new room, next to the one we had last year. Decor not as good but it was quiet, no bath but a decent sized shower.
The decor externally could do with a spruce up, nothing major but it does let the place down a bit. Breakfast was superb as before and the staff were excellent even if they did send extra towels up to the room that we didn't need.
Oh, when I went for my early morning walk the extractor fans were still throbbing away at 7am, so much for the assurances they would be turned off and not used again until 4pm!!!
Another very good stay despite the minor hiccup.

I have stayed at the Chalk Lane Hotel 3 times over the last few months, and each time have been given a totally different room. Each room as interesting as the next. Brass Bed stands, free standing Baths, antique furniture. The staff are amazing, nothing is too much trouble. Will continue to use this hotel for the foreseeable future.

Great evening at Chalk Lane Hotel which is tucked away in Epsom and feels like it should be a secret only shared with those you really like. The staff was really attentive and personable with just the right measure of humour (and played along with the surprise). Food was delicious. All in all a fabulous evening.

Stayed here for 2 nights on business, location is very good for Epsom Downs I walked up to the racecourse and over the downs one evening. The hotel
itself is more B&B than Hotel , it has an old world charm to it if that's your thing.

I had a single room booked for me so double rooms may be much different. The single room was small, didn't have much of a view and a small tv. Due to room size the bed was against a wall which I do dislike but maybe I'm just strange that way. The bathroom was almost as big as the room and was perfectly acceptable.

The breakfast has a cold buffet, all hot items were cooked to order which was nice and preferable to most hot plate breakfasts.

Overall the hotel was fine, I wouldn't go out my way to stay again but certainly wouldn't dismiss it entirely.

The hotel is situated in a cul de sac and although a few minutes walk to the centre of Epsom and good public transport and road links to many popular locations one of the loudest noises was the sound of birdsong. It is an old building and has been extended several times so not for those who want predictable uniform and uninteresting layout and ambience. Yet it has modern conveniences like free Wi-Fi (get a pass for each device) where this has not been avaialble or very pricey for a short term connection at several big name chain hotels where I have stayed.
The service is Old World and several have rightfully written about it being charming. Your comfort and convenience is a priority and the tone is friendly without being intrusive.
There is free car parking at the hotel (once again the central chains would charge extra -if it was available- making their "budget price" poorer value for the money).
Breakfast was included in the tariff and it was also of excellent quality with choices of cooked dishes as well as the cold continental style buffet. Several people wanted combinations not on the menu and they were all catered for with good grace and promptly. The cooked dishes are obviously cooked to order and brought to you when ready.
It is possible to have food and drink served in the reception/lounge area and there is a fair room service menu. Portion sizes are certainly not nouvelle cuisine although the tastes and presentation is similar to this style.
I have hesitated to write this report as I almost wanted to keep this treasure to myself, but I won't be able to visit as often as I would like and felt that others should find out about this country-side feel (woken by the sound of horses walking along the lane) charming individual hotel that treats you as an individual and honoured guest.
