Being local we only really use the launches in the summer or if we have visitors staying. These boats are absolutely brilliant for going to or from Hampton Court in style. They run between Hampton Court Palace and Richmond, but the best route for us is coming back from a day out at Hampton Court. Brilliant for the journey back from the RHS Flower Show after a day out, laden with all the plants you've bought. Just looked back for some photos and found out we've been doing this since at least 2005!

With family visiting from Japan we travelled to Richmond and then took this boat to Hampton Court. It was a lovely warm afternoon so we didn't care that we were held up some at Teddington Lock as we watched boats coming through ahead of us. The change at Kingston didn't bother us either but it did take two hours altogether which was longer than we'd expected though our daughter in law and granddaughter were delighted. Personally I think the river trips from London Westminster or Charing Cross down to Greenwich are more interesting with more of interest to see but we heard no complaints.

My wife and I decided to take the boat trip
from Richmond to Kingston. What a good idea! It was a lovely, lazy Saturday afternoon and Richmond was quite busy so I recommend you arrive at least 15min early to get a good seat. The trip is about an hour and you can buy drinks on the boat. The staff is very friendly and you can pay with cash or card.

We recently too the boat trip from Hampton Court (departure point is nest to the bridge on the HCP side) down to Richmond and back. It was a busy bank holiday Monday and the crowds were out in force, but we were near the front of the queue and were able to get reasonable seats together in the upper deck cabin - they're is no allocated seating, it's just first come first served. The upper cabin seating is composed of padded bench seating aound the walls (which means people are facing inwards - not ideal), and some free-standing wooden chairs that can be moved around (better). Downstairs, they have "booth-type" seating around tables, but this looked slightly claustrophobic to me. The downstairs cabin is also used to store pushchairs so it can be a bit tricky to pass through this area when it's busy (as it was on our trip).

Loos and a bar are provided (drinks prices were not excessive). There is no commentary or information on board, just occasional announcements, so it feels more like a ferry service than a tour. You get a reasonable view of the various riverside houses, gardens and pubs - but only what you could see anyway walking along the excellent Thames Path. Going through the locks at Teddington was interesting, and would certainly be fun for anyone who'd not gone through locks on a boat before.

It's a pleasant way to spend a lasy afternoon but for my money not as interesting as other river trips we've done. The boat trips that sail further up the Thames from Windsor are more fun in my opinion.

My husband and I were going out for lunch in Hampton Court and thought that it would be a great idea to do the last part from Kingston by boat. It was a brilliant idea. The sun was shining and the views were beautiful. Also, they have a fully stocked bar on board!
