“Not great”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2012

Looks lovely but don't let that fool you! Spent a part of the evening drinking at the bar and all i could smell was drugs wafting in from outside, not good for families! We tried to put this behind us but later in the evening the pub was invaded by what i can only describe as travelers! Made us all feel very uncomfortable. They didn't do anything wrong but everyone was looking at them like they were about to and they were very rude and demanding without any of the staff intervening.

Apart from the atmosphere, for the price paid, the rooms were very basic, hard mattress and dripping shower.

There are a number of other places to stay nearby and I would recommend trying these first!

Douglas H, Manager at Sir Douglas Haig, responded to this review, 12 April 2013
Dear Guest

Thank you for your review. We welcome all feedback, both good and bad and appriciate the time you have taken to inform us of these issues.

Now i can not comment on your specific stay with The Sir Douglas Haig as I am a new manager who has only recently taken over the Helm

Now I can assure you that the evening you spent in the bar and the issues you raise have certainly been rectified, some of the issues were apparent and the sources of which been told quite forcefully that they are not welcome in my establishment.

As for your comments about the hotel bedrooms, I have to agree and unfortunately these issues are not as quick a fix as your others, although i can assure you that steps are being taken to rectify these areas too.

Once again, Thank you for your review and if you do ever plan to stay with us again or even just visit for a spot of lunch, please dont hesitate to get in touch with me first and lets see if we can make up for your previous visit

Regards

David Friskey

This is our B and B of choice when visiting family in the area. The current landlords have made great improvements which are still ongoing, it is always clean and comfortable. Friendly staff and excellent food make it perfect for us.

Stayed for one night, a Sunday, to visit my son who works nearby. It was cold outside but the pub was warm. Our room, which was spotless, had a radiator which when put on heated it up nicely. We had to dine elsewhere as they don't do food on a Sunday evening but the breakfast was to die for. As a vegetarian I had two fried eggs, two grilled tomatoes, baked beans and some wild mushrooms, with wholegrain toast.
Offered fruit juice and cereal which, being lightweights, we turned down. Lovely people, already planning next trip.

Not sure that the previous reviewers stayed here as i felt that they could not have been more wrong. Stayed here this month after my company booked me in for a 2 night stay. The food in the evening was excellent and what a great atmosphere, the breakfast i thought was fantastic, i had a choice of cereals and juices and then the full english consisted of double sausage, egg, bacon, tomato, mushrooms, beans, toast and black pudding!!! (which you dont get in many places). The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful and the owners or managers were very friendly - would definately go back.

I booked my room via the website which clearly advertised bed & breakfast. When I arrived the owner sheepishly mentioned "Room only, sir" whilst I was checking in. After going through the but-I-booked-via-your-website discussion. I realised it was going to have room only - no breakfast (the website was run by an affliate and for some reason I had to pay for their marketing spend?!?). The room was clean enough but I had a wasp nest outside the window which forced me to keep it closed as it was impossible to change rooms as hotel fully booked. Other little items like the remote for the TV not working were slightly irritating and added to a disappointing stay.

Staff friendly and rooms ok. Shower wad a dribble and whole bathroom needed updating tho. Major downer was radiator in room not working, couldn't be fixed so moved to another room, rad not working there too!!! Very apologetic and offered mini electric heater. It wasn't really good overall especially at £85 twin it was little too expensive. I've stayed at far better for much less money.

Despite other previous mixed reviews, I stayed here for 1 night for work. Yes, it's a pub with B&B rooms upstairs. Yes, they are older rooms, painted etc, but tidy enough. They do now have flat screens & wi-fi. Breakfast was on time, quickly served and very nice indeed. Overall, it looks like most of the moans in previous reviews have been addressed sow ould recommend...
