“A nice country pub with old world charm and a real welcoming atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2013

I have stopped here many times over the years and its one of my favourite places that I have shared with someone special in my life. The food is great and the breakfast to die for. The rooms are really full of character and have twisted floors and beams. Nice comfy beds and big wide screen tellies.

Its also nice walking area, go up Box Hill and take in the views

You will not go wrong here - Trust Me

Room Tip: If you can ask for the gatehouse/lodge which is about 50 yards up the road, a self contained little...

We took our god daughter out to lunch and whilst the restaurant itself is nice we were not overly impressed with either the food or value for money. We all had the Carpachio of beef which whilst tasy cinsisted of 6 small slices. As a main the risotto with crab and spicy sausage. It was hard to find any crab in the rice and a single small fried ball of sausage and crab meat on the top.

Overall just just not good value but in nice surroundings

It took almost an hour for our food to arrive and when it did it was unappetising - risotto consisting mainly of butter, overcooked cod and stingy portion of rocket (5 leaves) with the tagliatelle dish. Staff apologised for the wait and offered free dessert but we didn't want it. Food overpriced for what it is Not recommended. We didn't stay overnight so can't comment on the accommodation.

Being a keen fisherman who loves the river Mole I had passed by this excellent pub without knowing for years just how good it was. Tucked just off the main road to Dorking near Box Hill it certainly pleased our party of 7 celebrating a birthday.
Lots of interesting choices and specials - I had devilled kidneys to start and they were as good as I had ever eaten - not being overcooked at all. The Stilton parfait was an interesting starter and something that could also have been a dessert. Main courses included a great cod dish with a bit of salt cod brandade and a nice seafood risotto. I had a burger after seeing someone tuck into one in the bar and it did not disappoint - moist and flavourful and large- with great french fries.
We did not try dessert as the pub had made a chocolate cake for us . Oh yes - I forgot the sides- lovely asparagus - great value for large stems and so many I had to take a doogy bag home.
Great service from freindly waitresses too..

The Running Horse is a great pub selling a good range of real ales. Pub grub is good but the restaurant is much finer.

Not very welcoming to walkers so muddy shoes is a no!

Beautiful village and very attractive surroundings.

Positives:
Nice location and couldn't be more convenient for a wedding at the church and reception at the village hall.

Our room was fine, nice bed and nice views of the church. Service was friendly.

Negatives:
Breakfast room a bit dingy. Able to hear the clattering and chattering of the staff in the background. Gaffer tape holding down the carpet.

Since 2002 I have enjoyed this wonderful pub/restaurant/hotel.
I have had business meals, friends and family join me. In fact if one is working alone there is no better place to be based and looked after by attentive staff that create a welcoming vibe that is hard to describe. Try out The Running Horses. You will not be let done

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Running Horses is a perfect country inn at the heart of picturesque Mickleham village in the Surrey hills. Step inside and you’ll discover one of the most charming places to eat and stay in Surrey. Dating back to the 16th century, it was once a coaching house. Back in those days, the inn’s clientele provided rich pickings for highwaymen. Thankfully, things are a little more peaceful these days, but some traditions live on. You’ll still find wonderful home-cooked British food, made with the freshest ingredients, accompanied by a wine list to compare with the top restaurants. The Running Horses has been family owned and run for the last fifteen years. And because we’re not part of a chain, the inn is full of character and individual touches. You’re guaranteed a warm welcome from the moment you enter the cosy bar with its roaring log fire. ... more   less
