“Gluten free fish”
Reviewed 1 March 2013

Colmans has awards for it's fish and no wonder it is always very fresh and tasty. If you are like me and cannot have wheat they do a special day of gluten free batter and it tastes just like the real thing. It was the last Sunday each month but best check the website as they sometimes change it.

“Deliciously fresh fish”
Reviewed 28 February 2013

Just the thing when you've walked a zillion mikes along the pier. Lots of hustle and bustle and very devoted customers. Loved the fact they named the boats that brought in the day's catch. I had hake and it was absolutely delicious. Washed down with a nice big glass of hose white it was great for a fish and chip shop. I'd go back it's the best thing in South Shields (apart from the parks and the pier!)

This is a place of legend the winner of more awards than you could shake a vinegar bottle at.This is simple done to perfection. Battered fish beautiful chips and mushy peas.want bread its a stotty cake and of course a good cup of tea. the relatively new extension to the cafe is excellent and has a host of famous admirers from former priministers to hollywood stars just look at the photographs on the wall.

“Good branding fish and chips is ok”
Reviewed 25 February 2013

Colmans used to be a fabulous fish and chip shop with a retro restaurant. The fish and chips was great in the 80s and 90s and - to a certain extent- they are still pretty good. What I like about them is they have done a brilliant branding job on the restaurant recently and the little touches like newspaper and listing which boats the fish were brought in on are real effective touches. I also like the wine bottles on the wall. The fish however, isn't as good as it used to be and I prefer the North Shields quay for fish and chips. Still it is very good and well worth a visit if only to revel in the 1950s throwback surroundings.
Definitely better than the upstart Harry Ramsden fish and chip restaurants.

One of the best for fish and chips in the north east without a doubt. there is even a display up telling you the name of the boats that catch the fish.

The fish and chips are to die for and although a little expensive I would have no doubt about returning again as I have done now for years.

In the take away shop they take your order and then cook it rather than cooking a load and letting them get cold/soggy
