We originally stumbled across this hotel by accident last March when we were in South Shields for the weekend visiting our son who is studying at South Tyneside Nautical College.
On the back of that we first stayed overnight early January of this year for a night and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Our most recent stay was at the end of May when we took three rooms as our eldest son and his wife plus our other two sons joined us for the three nights.
On arrival, at approx 1530hrs, we checked in and were allocated our rooms. It was evident, by the activity in the bedroom corridors of the housekeeping staff, that bedrooms were still being serviced/turned around and the hotel had been busy the previous night. When my son and his wife got to their room they found that it hadn't yet been made up!! My son went to reception and mentioned this. The Duty Manager was called and dealt with this shortfall very professionally and amicably by offering an upgrade to one of the lovely executive rooms this hotel has, a nice gesture for my son and his wife!! Our other two rooms were just fine complete with sea views, which we had paid the extra miniscule £3.00 for and it was well worth doing so!!!
As mentioned above the views from the bedrooms of this hotel are stunning on its riverside and it is interesting to watch the constant shipping leaving and entering The Tyne. It is great sat at the table, by the window, watching the world go by and even the lighthouse on the end of the northern breakwater at North Shields doesn't keep you awake as its beam sweeps across the river at night, quite therapeutic in fact!!
The bedrooms are very well appointed and clean and the beds very comfortable. The bathrooms are lovely and above all everything is very clean!!
The Boardwalk Restaurant, where breakfast is taken, is very nice too and also enjoys beautiful views across The Tyne. The breakfast service, as mentioned in other reviews, is buffet style and to be honest, on the first morning, it took a little grasping of where everything was. However the next two mornings we had found our bearings and everything was good, especially the food. One tip, as it says at the hot buffet counter, eggs are cooked to order, do order on arrival and then everything flows well there on!!
We dined in the restaurant on our final evening and were very impressed by the quality and choice of food, not to mention the standard of cooking and presentation. Well done The Chef!!
The staff on hand were great too!!
We also liked the front bar which is nicely located off the main reception and where you can sit to enjoy your drink. Well done, by the way, for now having Theakston's Bitter available which was an addition since our last stay in January.
Overall, we love this hotel which we think is very nicely furnished, comfortable and has a very nice atmosphere, not being clinical in anyway as some hotels are these days especially the budget variety!! The Staff are also a credit and without them, obviously, the place simply wouldn't be!!! Well done and we thoroughly recommend The Littlehaven Hotel, South Shields, to anybody considering a visit!!! We are looking for a reason to visit again soon but as our son is soon to head off to sea, as his training draws to a close at college, our chances are dwindling!!
Thanks to GM Graham and his team!!
