“Stay With Our Family 27th May To 29th May.”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

We originally stumbled across this hotel by accident last March when we were in South Shields for the weekend visiting our son who is studying at South Tyneside Nautical College.

On the back of that we first stayed overnight early January of this year for a night and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Our most recent stay was at the end of May when we took three rooms as our eldest son and his wife plus our other two sons joined us for the three nights.

On arrival, at approx 1530hrs, we checked in and were allocated our rooms. It was evident, by the activity in the bedroom corridors of the housekeeping staff, that bedrooms were still being serviced/turned around and the hotel had been busy the previous night. When my son and his wife got to their room they found that it hadn't yet been made up!! My son went to reception and mentioned this. The Duty Manager was called and dealt with this shortfall very professionally and amicably by offering an upgrade to one of the lovely executive rooms this hotel has, a nice gesture for my son and his wife!! Our other two rooms were just fine complete with sea views, which we had paid the extra miniscule £3.00 for and it was well worth doing so!!!

As mentioned above the views from the bedrooms of this hotel are stunning on its riverside and it is interesting to watch the constant shipping leaving and entering The Tyne. It is great sat at the table, by the window, watching the world go by and even the lighthouse on the end of the northern breakwater at North Shields doesn't keep you awake as its beam sweeps across the river at night, quite therapeutic in fact!!

The bedrooms are very well appointed and clean and the beds very comfortable. The bathrooms are lovely and above all everything is very clean!!

The Boardwalk Restaurant, where breakfast is taken, is very nice too and also enjoys beautiful views across The Tyne. The breakfast service, as mentioned in other reviews, is buffet style and to be honest, on the first morning, it took a little grasping of where everything was. However the next two mornings we had found our bearings and everything was good, especially the food. One tip, as it says at the hot buffet counter, eggs are cooked to order, do order on arrival and then everything flows well there on!!

We dined in the restaurant on our final evening and were very impressed by the quality and choice of food, not to mention the standard of cooking and presentation. Well done The Chef!!
The staff on hand were great too!!

We also liked the front bar which is nicely located off the main reception and where you can sit to enjoy your drink. Well done, by the way, for now having Theakston's Bitter available which was an addition since our last stay in January.

Overall, we love this hotel which we think is very nicely furnished, comfortable and has a very nice atmosphere, not being clinical in anyway as some hotels are these days especially the budget variety!! The Staff are also a credit and without them, obviously, the place simply wouldn't be!!! Well done and we thoroughly recommend The Littlehaven Hotel, South Shields, to anybody considering a visit!!! We are looking for a reason to visit again soon but as our son is soon to head off to sea, as his training draws to a close at college, our chances are dwindling!!

Thanks to GM Graham and his team!!

I had a bit of an inauspicious start to my two night stay - my room was located directly above the karaoke and the sound proofing was sadly lacking. When I contacted reception the staff member was extremely helpful and arranged a move. I was then in a room at the end of one of the 'legs' of the hotel and while the wind was high and thus noisy, that did not keep me awake like the singing did. I don't think we will be seeing that particular local on the X Factor though apparently this was where Joe McElderry got started. Both rooms were well equipped and clean with some minor lack of attention to details - no tissues in the box, no replacement hand towel when the room was serviced, and the beds were fine. The view was beautiful. Breakfast was a self service affair and while a fruit platter was available it was a bit sparse by 7.50 both mornings - you must have to be an early riser for the healthy option! As a non meat eater I could have had eggs, beans, hash browns, mushrooms, prawns, cheese and smoked salmon so not a bad selection though it would be nice to see veggie sausages on offer. The staff were great and they cause this review to be very good rather than average - friendly and helpful particularly when responding to my request for a move. I would return if in the area again.

Room Tip: ask for a room that is not next to or above the public areas - there isn't much in the way of so...

We booked our wedding at the Little Haven and had a fantastic experience with them. With such a short time scale between booking it and the ceremony (11 weeks), the staff at the hotel made sure everything we wanted was sorted in time. They invited us to the hotel for informal meetings with the wedding coordinators, kept us informed in the run up to the wedding (such as seating plans, payments/bookings) and made sure that everything ran smoothly.
What a fantastic day. We checked into the penthouse suite earlier than what we should have because luckily the last guests had left early. Extra tables were provided that we had forgotten that we needed without complaint, both the ceremony room and the function room was set up exactly how we wanted and the staff kept us right on the day.
The staff were fantastic, every one of them were professional, cheerful and helpful.
The food was top notch. The wedding breakfast (after the ceremony) the buffet (at the reception) and the breakfast in the morning were all fantastic value for money. The portions were more than we expected.
Because of the service we received we have decided that every anniversary we are going to return to celebrate as this hotel really made our day special.

The location is beautiful and picturesque. As some one else has already mentioned the sound of the waves lapping against the shore is truly a wonderful ambience to wake up to.

Room Tip: Check out the penthouse suites.

Stayed for one night and was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is located by the beach/entrance to the river tyne. The town of South Shields is 10 mins walk away. I opted for a sea view room . The room was clean however wifi was a bit intermittent. I left my window open overnight and was lovely to hear the sea hitting the shore. Staff were very friendly. An enjoyable stay!

This is the friendliest best value Hotel anywhere near Newcastle upon Tyne. The staff are gems and really can't do enough to help you enjoy your stay. The rooms ar large, excellent views over the mouth of the River Tyne, with lots of ships coming and going. The breakfast is brilliant, served in a lovely conservatory and the quality of ingredients are second to none (Especially the Black Pudding!). Newcastle and Sunderland in easy reach, as are the Indian Restaurants in Ocean Road - dozens of them, all good. Give yourself a treat - stay here...

We found this hotel very good, rooms excellent, food very appetising and its position cannot be bettered on this part of the coast. To have views both of the river Tyne and the coastline is stunning, and a bonus is the drinks in this hotel are very reasonably priced, staff very friendly and professional in everything they do. Short walk into town and or walk along the coast as far as you want to go.

Room Tip: ask for a river or sea view as well as the view they are quieter.
