“Fantastic Staff”
Reviewed 3 October 2006

Stayed here for the great north run in September. Fantastic little hotel with very helpful staff. Toby carvery across the car park is a great option for a drink or food. Really can't fault the place.
If you are thinking of staying here for the Great North Run, my advice would be a taxi (approx 15-20 mins) to Heworth Metro station and then use the Metro to get into Newcastle.

Standard Holiday Inn Express. Good value at £52/night. Toby carvery next door also good. Rooms clean and helpful staff. Convenient for Beamish (10 mins away) and Metro Centre.

We had rooms facing the road - some traffic noise but not too bad. Perhaps better to request rooms overlooking car park???

i have stayed at this hotel for a few weeks now on buisness. it is a very clean and friendly hotel. The problem is the room rate has been increased by 40%. I think that the new manager has a very short sighted approach and i advise any companies with a corporate rate in place to think twice about booking here long term

Went as a family and could not fault it. Continental breakfast which was really good and something for everyone even picky kids. Room clean and comfortable, everything you need is already there for you. Toby Carvery just next door for a good meal and drink. We used it as a base for going to Newcastle and Beamish(which is very close) and cannot fault it.

I fell in love with this place the first time I stayed there. It's very new (built maybe 2002 / 3) and the rooms are very nicely finished. As a Holiday Inn Express, don't expect much in the way of facilities - this is strictly a lodge hotel with a lot of rooms but no bar, restaurant, gym... nothing. If you're happy with that, you'll love it.

The bedrooms all have a double bed and a fold-out sofa bed. The main bed is very comfortable, and the sofa is great for lounging around on :-) There is also a desk / dressing table, and a colour television with the usual five channels plus some Sky ones (mainly the news ones.) There is a wardrobe of sorts, but is is more like a rail fixed to the wall, but without doors, so your clothes are out in the open all of the time - great when you're packing, as you're not likely to leave things behind in there! All lighting is very modern, and the room has a nice, airy feel, and there is also a huge double-glazed window which you can open as widely as you like.

The bathroom is small but cleverly designed. As you open the door it swings back to become the toilet door, thus saving on space - very clever! You also get a nice, big shower and a decent sized sink located in the corner of the room.

As I mentioned earlier, the hotel doesn't have a restaurant. Just off the reception is a large open area, and it is here that you can have your breakfast if you wish. This is a self-service continental affair, with plenty of cereal, fruit juice (from a machine), coffee, yoghurts and bread rolls available. You are also welcome to take your breakfast back to your room if you wish. As for other meals and drinks, just outside the front door, about twenty meters away, is a Toby pub, which serves a very nice carvery, and is a very pleasant venue for a drink. If you want more choice, Newcastle, the Metro Centre, and Durham are all within a short drive.

All in all it's a cracking little hotel, and definitely my favourite in Washington.

This is a great Holiday Inn express. Clean and modern rooms and next to the Toby Carvery pub which do great meals.

Just off the A1 for people who are travelling. It's 10/15 minutes from Newcastle and you will need a car or a taxi. Taxi into Newcastle is £11/£14 one way.

This is a very clean and pleasant hotel. Decent sized rooms for the price with en suite and all usual facilities (TV etc). Breakfast is a help your self cold buffet affair but of good quality. Very friendly and helpful reception. Would definitely recommend.
