Wewouldyed here for a wedding. The venue was small but staff were very friendly and chatty.

Our room exceeded my expectations. Comfy bed nice size. Big tv and iron provided and the shower was pretty good. Only bad thing is there was no main light just a few lamps. And the WiFi isn't free but I no there working on it.

Poor location. Nothing to see. A car is needed other wise it's buses all day. The Toby across the road was handy though.
OverallI I enjoyed it

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience of the hotel.

I was delighted to read that you found your room so comfortable and the staff friendly. Sorry to hear that the location wasn't great for you but as you say, with a car it is well situated for exploring a wide area of the North East, and for those wanting to travel by bus it can be caught from just along the road.

I hope we can welcome you back again at some point in the future.

Yours sincerely

Just recently returned from a short 2 night business/pleasure trip with my wife.We found the front of house staff to be good but a little undermanned at the prime check in time which resulted in delays at check in, however they did their best but needed extra manpower.
Chargeable WiFi is a bane, as other hotel chains do include it in their price structure and as an ihg member would find it a good selling point when comparing.
Car parking was ample with extra parking at the rear.
The room was fine if a little jaded, bed comfortable, and noise wasnt a problem.
Overall ok but with a little tweaking could be better.

Room Tip: maybe check in a little later if possible to avoid delays.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for your recent review here on TripAdvisor.

I was pleased to see that on the whole the hotel worked well for you. I am sorry that you had to queue at check-in, I know this can be frustrating and we endeavour to staff accordingly based on our expected volume.

Although WiFi is currently chargeable we are working on a solution where it will be available free of charge for all IHG Reward Club members (our free loyalty scheme) from 2014.

Yours sincerely

My mother and I have stayed at this lovely hotel five times now, and have found nothing to criticise. The welcome is warm, the staff friendly, helpful and professional, the rooms spotlessly clean, and the breakfast wonderful!
In addition, the hotel is perfectly situated for visiting Durham, Tynemouth,Gateshead, Newcastle, South Shields, the Stadium of Light!!(a must for me every time, but it is equally convenient for St James's Park!),and picturesque places slightly further afield such as Corbridge and Hexham.
Highly recommended!

Staff are absolutely fantastic and very friendly. Rooms was spotless and I wondered if the noise from the A1 would be a problem but it wasn't. The food however was appalling, Leek and potato soup had something pink in it, the potato skins were stone cold, rissotto was tasteless, gammon really salty, the fish goujons were so overcooked my husband thought they were chicken!Cabbage was white where it had been boiled to death. On one night the chicken was cold in the middle.Breakfasts were slightly better apart from the scrambled eggs were sat in a pool of water.Although our price included our evening meal we didn't eat here again,we went down the road.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience here on TripAdvisor.

I was really pleased to hear that you found the staff to be so friendly and your rooms quiet and comfortable. I was nevertheless very sorry to hear that the food didn't live up to your expectations and have asked the Head Chef to review this situation as a matter of urgency.

First of all let me say that the staff are truly FANTASTIC.
Reception staff and restaurant staff very polite and friendly.

However, that's were it ends.

Luckily we were only there for one night.

The hotel looks and feels very dated. My room was smelly and gave me a terrible headache. Plus there was lots of hair in the shower from the previous guest.

The food in the restaurant was not good either. Below average, giving me tummy ache.

Not what i was expecting from Holiday Inn. I have stayed in many Holiday Inns and Express and this is the worst that i have stayed in.

Will not return to this one again.

The only thing going for this hotel is the great staff attitude.

Dear Reviewer

I was extremely disappointed to read this review of your recent stay with us. This is certainly far from the norm as you will hopefully see from the majority of reviews here on TripAdvisor and other review sites online. I am very sorry for the apparent shortfalls you encountered - rest assured I will follow these up internally to address the issues you have raised.

It was lovely to hear how great the staff were and I will of course feed this back too. If you would like to discuss your feedback personally please feel free to call me at the hotel on 0191 418 9400.

I recently had the chance to stay here. It was a very clean place . The rooms were very nice warm and tidy. The food was really good with plenty to choose from. The staff were very friendly
and helpful and the ladies waiting on the tables always had a smile for you no matter what.
especially Kelsie. If you are visiting county Durham for a few days and need a base. I would recommend you try this place.
