Stayed here for one night, very clean hotel, staff pleasant. Bedrooms good too. Stayed here to go to a concert at the Metro Arena, not too far away in a Taxi, would do the same again. Good value for money

Convenient location for work, enjoyable stay (as ever), clean, staff always polite and attentive - special mention must go to the lads who cover the nightshift, Martin & Dave, who always go the extra mile to ensure our stay is a comfortable one :-)

4th or 5th year in a row now that my colleagues & myself have stayed at this establishment.

Must be a good reason for us coming back each year!

The bar team Andy, Sam and Cally always make staying over a pleasure. Ps nice cheese cake! Check in is always efficient and being a platinum member I always get upgraded plus 500 voucher points. I enjoy the buffet style eat all you can breakfast and complementary news paper.

We didn't pay the rack rate advertised at reception and my assessment of value would be rather different if he had!

However, the location is convenient just off the A1 close to Durham and Newcastle. The slight downside is that one can hear the drone of traffic from the bedrooms albeit it was not intrusive and din't affect our night's sleep. The room was well fitted and the bed comfortable (my partner thought it a little on the hard side but that's down personal preference). A kettle with tea and coffee were welcome. The bath filled rapidly and bath foam and shampoo were provided. The bathroom showed a little sign of wear and tear - the bottom of the door was rotten probably as a result of some previous water leakage but everything was clean. Really nothing to object to here.

We ate both dinner and breakfast in the Traders restaurant. The restaurant hasn't much atmosphere but is clean and comfortable.

For dinner, apart from the a la carte menu which is adequate but not extensive they also offer a fixed price 2 course carvery. We rejected that as the meat looked rather dried up. We stuck with a la carte choices. The food was all very tasty, well presented and quantities sufficient but not large. Our expectations were exceeded. We were served by a number of waitresses although it was Mandy who attended to us most of the time. All were attentive and helpful and Mandy particularly so.

Breakfast is a usual buffet affair with a wide choice of juices, fruit, cereals and hot food, some excellent croissants as well French bread and brown bread. Mandy was serving again and again the service was excellent.

So the key test - would we stay there again? At the price we paid, absolutely. At the advertised rack rate...we'd look elsewhere!

Stayed one night while on business in area. Check in efficient and desk staff pleasant, no room upgrade even though platinum member, no daily newspaper offered, voucher points or drink at bar was offered but they had run out of vouchers so not sure if I will see the points. Room was ok, biggest bed I have ever seen squeezed into room, flat screen tv, normal tray with coffee and tea, no biscuits or bottled water and no safe. Wardrobe was non existent and a Holiday Inn Express style unit was built in with draws, shelves and hanging space with a trouser press! (do people still use these) Room 422 overlooked the A1 and the double glazed aluminium framed windows did little to keep out the noise, in fact I though the window had been left open as it was so loud, also condensation running down the metal frame, they look in need of replacement, maybe with triple glazed upvc units next time:o) Bathroom was compact, bath and shower, but cleaning left a lot to be desired as splatter from the last resident was evident under the toilet seat, not what you want to see! Shower was ok, not that powerful, could do with a better head and pumped supply. I opted for the breakfast at £10 which sounded good value and they made a lot of their award winning food, bit of a disappointment, very small selection of food, hot cooked was ok with hash browns, beans, scrambled and fried eggs, cold selection was restrictive to say the least with four slices of dried cheese and meats. Table with cereals and selection of fruit but no potted yogurt just large bowl of natural. Bread selection was abysmal, no rolls or speciality breads just a few croissants, and french sticks. Coffee was disgusting, worse than dishwater, why not get a good bean to cup machine and let guests server themselves instead of serving weak tasteless rubbish. On a good point the hash browns were some of the best I have had in a hotel, crisp and fluffy on the inside and not greasy, the eggs were done ok and the mushrooms were very tasty. They now give free WiFi, don't bother its slower than a slow thing I ended up using my 3G dongle, if you want faster speeds you have to pay, if your going to give free internet at least make it usable, also most other Holiday Inns give Platinum members free high speed internet as part of the package. For £79 a night it was ok, I would not pay more, I would think the rooms on the back side of the hotel would be a lot quieter and maybe a bit more recognition for IHG members.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback here on TripAdvisor.

I was pleased to read that you found your stay to be good value and the service pleasant and efficient.

I have asked my Housekeeping Manager to undertake a review with her team to address the cleanliness issues you highlight as these are certainly not the norm and far from what we aspire to.

We generally have great feedback about breakfast so I am sorry that on this occasion it didn't live up to your expectations. Both the Chef and Food & Beverage Manager are reviewing your feedback to deal with any issues and to try and ensure we don't disappoint in the future.

As a Platinum member we do try and offer complimentary upgrades wherever possible but on most nights have more Platinum members than we have Executive Rooms available. Regarding your IHG Reward Points, these should have been applied directly by the hotel team but if you find they do not appear on your statement please do contact my Reception Manager - Deborah Colling directly on 0191 418 9400.

Yours sincerely

We booked at very quiet time for a stopover on our way to Edinburgh. I would have been disappointed if I'd paid full rack rate, but the price I paid made it excellent value. The restaurant was good and our waitress was excellent. Kids eat free helps, although my son was too tired to want to eat much so ice cream was provided. The rooms are to the standard you expect from a Holiday Inn and the bed for us was a good size and very comfortable. We didn't take breakfast in the restaurant, just got on the road.
