“poor food in a tired hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

The hotel had defective bathroom lights, made shaving difficult, fire alarm activated for short time about 3am one morning. Location is quiet. Did find a good carvery by the Premier inn. Was charged £12.75 daily for a pathetic breakfast. Poor quality and limited choice. Door didn't want to open or close. Only good point? Staff were always happy and helpful.

Room Tip: Away from rooms overlooking the A1m

Booked two rooms here for myself and daughter , we had to book the two rooms separate as I stayed for two nights and my daughter one , the computer couldn't understand the request for the two rooms and both had to be booked separately, , after just travelling in America and booking into 5 hotels , we thought the booking process was quite quick until we printed off our receipt confirmation only to find we had booked No Breakfast in this room , we went back into the system and there is no option for a Breakfast package or a Non Breakfast package .
On arriving on a Sunday night we discovered the Reception was in the bar , very odd, but there was nobody about , we waited about 10 minutes before a man came out of the back drying his hands , where we were very hurriedly booked in , he was talking so fast I had to ask him to repeat things about codes for doors again , it was if we were holding him back .
On asking what time the restaurant was open I was told it was shut on a. Sunday , something the website failed to mention and we were told to go down the road to eat . Down the road is a Holiday Inn and a Premier inn if we were going to eat there we should of stayed there .
The rooms are small ,,badly in need of decorating , and very basic . We struggled to find a plug eventually finding one although my daughters was upside down . On leaving we found another one near to the door , very handy .
My daughter was due to leave her room at 12 noon booking out time and had a housekeeper go in at 10 am to sort the room for the next guest , very bad .
Laminated signs were lying on the bed telling us they had a new fire alarm in place and was very sensitive , asking to shut the bathroom door on taking a shower or bath ,, My door wouldn't close and I had no fan in the bathroom . So at midnight felt I couldn't have a bath ,
On the Monday morning I asked what time meals were served to in the restaurant and guess what it was closing early . Unfortunately I didn't get back to the hotel until 8.45 pm so no supper again . Room service don't ask as they don't know what it is .
On the good side beds are comfy and the water is hot even if you are waiting for the fire alarm to go off .
Free wifi was included in the price it just doesn't say you have to reconnect about every 20 mins , really bad when your trying to work .

Room Tip: Choose one of the hotels on the same road

Rooms very small, very old and extremely basic. Nothing like the photos on the internet. Has one of those half baths with shower, waste of time. You check in at the bar! Should've been a dead giveaway. Was told on arrival, on a Saturday night in July that it was quiet, that the restaurant would be closing early and that the menu in the rooms is not available, only what was on the blackboard. So after we dumped our things in our room, we headed to the Toby Carvery down the hill, less than 5 mins walk, as it was approaching 7 pm.

For £50 a night room only I think it was very over priced and will never go back or recommend to anyone.

It's a Campanile. It's cheap and what you get reflects that - if you want five star accommodation you'll just have to pay more.
Staff at this particular location were friendly and the service was pretty good. Hotel could benefit from a bit of an overhaul but the room I stayed in was clean and everything worked as it should.
In our modern connected world, however, just two power points per room is a bit mean!

Having stayed in another Campanile Hotel (Glasgow) a couple weeks previously I had no qualms about booking at this hotel for an overnighter after a day at nearby Beamish, fully expecting a similar standard.

I was utterly disappointed, as it was NOTHING of the sort! I was especially disappointed as I'd recommended it to other family members too on the back of my previous dealings with Campanile.

So firstly the good points..
The sole member of staff that we saw was pleasant and helpful (which is surprising considering he seemed to be the only guy working there for almost 24 hours!).

The breakfast (prepared by the same guy) was excellent and well presented..

And finally the hotel, is cheaper than it's near neighbours..

The above 3 reasons are the difference between scoring only 1 point or the 2 that've I've given!

The reason for how cheap it is quickly becomes apparent once you start looking around this hotel! Tired, Scruffy and in dire need of a complete overhaul! My father who travelled with us suggested it needed demolishing and rebuilding! (Which was perhaps a tad harsh! - but the place most certainly needs gutting!

The room walls had dent/holes in them, there were dirty marks all over the walls, I didn't feel comfortable enough to walk on the carpet in bare feet and did not want to use the shower. The pillows are wafer thin (which come to think of it was a complaint at Glasgow too). Just not nice!

The seating in the reception area was soiled, ripped and does the scruffy theme justice along with the giant cobwebs dotted about the place.

The rat posion containers just by the doorways don't offer much of a welcome either, along with the broken external security keypad that had apparently been forced (by crowbar or similar) didn't bode well!

Oh and if you feel the need to go running to the hills and driving out of the place at a fast rate of knots... beware of the large pot-hole in the driveway which is capable of causing a blowout or wheel damage if caught unawares.

My advice.. until Campanile totally revamps this place, then look next door at the Holiday Inn.. or a few hundred yards down the road to the Premier Inn!

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel nearby!

Had a short break in this hotel as we wanted to visit Beamish museum and Durham. Hotel was very good for a basic break ...however travellers beware do not book through bookings.com as they tell you breakfast is included when it isn't..still persuing this today

Previously used nearby Travelodge which was full for our last minute trip. Very impressed - spacious room, comfortable bed, 24" flat screen TV, bath/shower with plenty of hot water. Should have known that free WiFi was included in the price as we always want WiFi. Signed up our various devices and was able to stream a film without problems. A real bonus as this is often £10 extra in other places.

Had a full-English breakfast, freshly cooked while we waited in the hotel restaurant, very impressed with unlimited tea, coffee and toast and a good range of fruit, yoghurt and cereal with complimentary newspapers to read.

Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: lower numbered rooms are further away from the A1M, though we only noticed the road when we came out...
