“Sleeping in a sauna”
Reviewed 14 August 2014

Room had no aircon and window that could only be opened 2 inches, with a glass outer protector stopping any fresh air. Was so bad that we had to request a fan, which was provided covered in dust, and run it all night. The outside temperature was actually cool but we could not get fresh air into the room. On top of that they charged me twice.

Room Tip: Don't bother with a room

We took the opportunity of purchasing Wowcher vouchers for an overnight stay with bed, breakfast and evening meal and basically you get what you pay for...

Rooms were clean but very tired and in definite need of a refurb. The same could be said for the communal areas such as the bar and spa, but all of the staff without fail were really friendly and helpful despite the huge number of coach parties arriving at the same time as us!

We ate in the carvery restaurant which was ok, but certainly nothing special although the free bottle of wine certainly helped improve the meal. The restaurant just didn't seem big enough to cater for the number of guests as displayed by the queues for the toast machine in the morning and running out of hot water in the decrepit urn where you had to pour your own tea.

All in all for £30 per person we can't really complain but I certainly wouldn't recommend paying any more than this to stay at this hotel.

Our wowcher deal consisted of an overnight stay with dinner bed breakfast and a spa treatment. The room was lovely, but the dinner in the supposedly posh restaurant was highly disappointing. Some of the food was overcooked and some of it was raw, so completely unsatisfactory, the service was bad and when we expressed our concerns to the staff and the manager, they showed no interest. The spa treatment was meant to be 1/2 hour each but was only 20 mins. The staff on the front desk also need to be re trained in customer care. Not one of them enquired if everything was alright during our stay, there was hardly any eye contact with the customers. It is a pity because it is a lovely building with lovely grounds and we went with high hopes but we shall not be going again.

My wife and I took up an offer for this hotel (Wowcher Deal). For Dinner, B & B and a bottle of Wine. We paid extra for an upgrade in room for another £30.00. On the previous 2 occasions we have not been disappointed at all but sadly on this visit we were not singing praise. Our room, though nice, was not worth the extra money as it was on a ground floor area that was directly adjacent to the outside smoking area. Many excited people were obviously enjoying having a smoke and chatting among themselves (sometimes very loudly) This did not die down until nearly midnight. Our Dinner on this visit was allocated to the Carvery (On previous visits we had dined in another restaurant with waitress service and a better selection of freshly prepared meals). The Carvery was, for us, not the best presented Carvery we have visited. Sorry to say, for us, the words Cattle and Market spring to mind. I had Fish and my portion was Dry from being under lamps too long. Desserts were messy in appearance on the display unit.
Breakfast sadly reinforced that view. The area around the swimming pool was badly in need of a jolly good scrub, especially in the over-spill channels and on the floors from the changing rooms in to the Sauna, Steam Room and swimming areas. Whilst we have made some critical remarks on this occasion we have to be fair in stating that the deal was an excellent deal and well worth the money paid. When we left we inquired at reception as to why we had been allocated the Carvery and not the other restaurant we were informed that it depended on the deal we had bought (There were different deals apparently). We were informed that if we had paid another £6.95 each we could have been in the Fine Dining Room for Dinner. Had we been informed of that we would most certainly have done so. We shall know next time. We hope this review is helpful to other readers who may be taking up the offers. The offer is very good for the price paid but watch out for the points we have mentioned.

We used a wowcher and booked an overnight stay in July. This included spa treatments and dinner. Spa treatments were back massage and facial. These could not be classed as treatments and was a glorified face mask and left for ten minutes!! Didn't use the pool as didn't look that clean. Evening meal was in the fine dining restaurant and have to say the food was good. Room was dated and needed redecorating large bathroom with his and hers sinks. Alot of coach parties there, wouldn't stay again.. you do get what you pay for!!

On arrival I reminded receptionist of our non-smoking room booking. Was initially given a room with a non-smoking sign on door but was obvious from the stench inside that the sign must have been recently added! Receptionist moved us to a room that didn't have the reeking smell so that was good. Double room (624) was somewhat bijou and dated with a old square tv so the few ODD channels available we all chopped on the sides. This was only a prob as the weather was bad so had an hour or so to watch it. Evening meal was so-so but given what we paid - adequate. Coffee tastes like freeze dries rather than filtered through out. There is a cafe area but even that coffee tasted quite instinct. Cleanliness was somewhat lax - on a few area/walls there were marks and stains which could and should have been cleaned. Staff we generally pleasant but their turn out was well below par with several having shirts hanging from back.
Don't intend to go again - even if free, but I do feel like we got a 1* experience for a 1* price.

I stayed here some 20yrs ago and found it an elegant hotel. In those days reception was in the main hall and although the room we had was modern, the ambience and service were very good.
Fast forward to 2014 and using a wowcher break we booked an overnight stay with dinner. Well reception had moved to a new annex which also housed the carvery and several bars. Booking in was ok but you are immediately aware that the whole place needs updating and refurbishment. Furniture is worn and needs replacing and that was the case for our room. Small, grubby and very tired. The whole place was packed with coach parties making the feel of the place more like a Motorway Service Area, and a bad one at that. We had pre booked our meal for 7.15 as we were told the coach parties are fed between 6 and 7.15. We were also given a voucher for a bottle of wine, included in our wowcher break.
We took a walk around the grounds which have been very nice I would guess but could do with a couple of good groundsmen if only to collect the bottles, cans and coffee cups which seem to pass for garden ornaments.
We duly turned up for evening meal to find one harrased lady on the desk, taking calls and cleaning up. That said she was very polite and efficient. We had to go to the bar to collect our wine, need to change th male members of staff for ones who know how to deal with guests.
We were having a buffet meal but as it was coach change over there was a limited choice. Anyway we waited and the appropriate food appeared, much to the vocal disgust of the Coachers, I now know why I would never go on a coach trip.
The food was actually very good and plenty of it as was the wine. When we finished our meal we took the wine to the old Hall which was very nice and quiet.
The bed in the room was ok but the room was very hot so we didnt have the best nights sleep ever. Still the shower was hot and after a short wait the breakfast was good. The same lady was working from the previous night, still upbeat. She needs a bonus for being a good advert for the hotel.
Ok so the good bits
Food, good quality.
Individual memebers of staff very good, lady in Carvery, dark short hair and glasses and Glenys behind the bar who was very busy but still managed to bring us tea.
The not so good
Hotel needs a massive facelift
Certainly needs more staff and sort out the ones who think they are doing me a favour
The management need to smile a bit moreand perhaps roll up the sleeves and help out when its manic, a big bunch of keys and a radio does not a good manager make.
Its not how I remeber it and thats sad. This was an elegant hotel with fantastic public areas but now its Watford Gap for coach trips.
The bonus I suppose we paid 59 pounds for two including dinner, wine and breakfast. Would we come back, no I afraid.
Just as an aside it is billed as a wedding venue, it wouldnt be mine.

Room Tip: If you do come here ask to see the cell doors from Newgate Prison. A rare treat
