“Third visit-good as ever.”
Reviewed 4 May 2011

Our third stay in the Carlton while visiting family in Rugby.
Clean, comfortable, good breakfast, helpful staff.
Only sorry that we could not dine in the restaurant this time as we were going to the theatre.
We'll be back!

I have used the Carlton on many occasions over 20 years. I can honestly say I have never had a meal which was not of a high quality, I have also booked relatives of mine into the Carlton they also had nothing but praise for the service, and being Yorkshire the cost.

Friendly, helpful staff, great restaurant. We arrived by train from London Heathrow at 1100 AM, seriously jet-lagged. Our room was ready and they let us check in early to rest and freshen up. Dinner was delicious with generous portions. Some Americans may think the rooms are small, but as world travellers, we are accustomed to variety in room sizes, and are more concrened with cleanliness, a good shower and nightime quiet.

we went to the Carlton for an evening meal for a birthday and booked the table for the 10 of us in advance. we got there and waited in the reception bar bit for an hour almost. they hadn't set our table or something, so we ordered drinks and our food while we waited.
when we got to our table finally they'd decorated it with 18 birthday decorations which was nice of them. although I thought the table was too small for the 10 of us.
the starter was nice, and food came quickly. when it came to the main, it took ages for them to bring it all round to us. we had roast of the day which they brought out the lamb on a tray and went around each of us leaning over us, then came all the veg.. the staff there were really friendly although 1 lady just looked fed up and made you feel like a child. they didn't give us a choice of how much veg we wanted, and it took ages to get it all on our plates it was almost cold. not really worth as much as they charge, but it was tasty and I liked how they flavoured the veg.
overall the service was good apart from one staff member.
one of our family members got food poisoning all night after having lamb cutlets I think it may have been out of date but the rest of us were fine with roast lamb. another thing one asked for well done beef and it came out very pink. not really a restaurant more like a pub food type thing

Thank you for your review. We appreciate people taking the time to give us feedback, and constructive criticism helps us to improve our service. However, on this occasion, I have to take a defensive stance, as I feel that your comments are genuinely unfair.

The Carlton Hotel, is probably the only establishment in Rugby still providing silver service. It may be that the more formal customs – taking people’s orders whilst they are in the bar, moving them through to the restaurant once their meal is ready, and serving people individually with their main courses – are ones you had not come across before, and were therefore contrary to your expectations. Our aim is to achieve an air of elegance and luxury. We are sorry that this wasn’t how your party perceived it. We usually receive very positive reactions.

You say that one of your guests had food poisoning. This is obviously a very serious accusation. We are surprised that you did not contact us if you believed that we were to blame. We pride ourselves on the quality of our food, and can guarantee that your party would not have been served meat that was past its sell by date.

We rely on customer feedback to constantly improve our service, but are always glad to have the opportunity to rectify and discuss any issues as they happen. We hope that you will tell us immediately if you are unhappy with anything on your next visit to our restaurant.
