“Intriguing and Novel!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2014

My mate and I had promised ourselves a visit here for ages as we had heard so many good comments about it! On arrival at about 6.40 for our booking at 7, the place appeared desserted. It transpires it doesn't open until 7 in the evening. The exterior of the place looks exceedingly uninspiring and the entrance, which is at the side of the building, looks positively uninviting as one has to pass through the smoker's area to get there. The whole facade could do with a really good coat of paint and a general sweep-up wouldn't go amiss either.

Stepping inside is to step back in time - very dimply lit, old-fashioned patterned terracota tiles on the floor, spartan tables and a bar tucked up the corner. The restaurant is in fact up the stairs which twist up to a double windowed room again very spartanly decorated with an eclectic mix of ornamental items adorning the walls and two large white-painted chandeliers. the tables are bare scrubbed wood and the chairs a mix of old painted pews and odds and ends of chairs which I imagine were picked up from junk shops.

The menu is on a blackboard - very simple and limited in choice. To start there is a bread platter or a mixed meze for sharing. To follow, there is a choice of various cuts of steak from sirloin to fillet. So, my pal and I chose the mixed meze followed by two rib-eye steaks.

Our waitress was absolutely lovely - very helpful, chatty, efficient and friendly. The meze arrived consisting of hummus, olives, lovely chunky bread, dolmades, and selected cold cured meats. Very good indeed we both agreed. Then, followed the pieces de resistance - the steaks on the lava stones which sizzled as they arrived in front of us. The wooden platter on which the heated stone sits also accomodates a three-portion dip tray with a creamy peppercorn dip, garlic butter and a minty/chili dip. I have to say, I would have preferred some mustard and horseradish myself. Alongside was a beautifully presented plate of salad with a good dressing. The steak was O.K. although not outstanding in that it was a little on the tough side and not deperately succulent. The chips were of the skin-on variety and very nice indeed - presented in a small wire basket like those from deep fryers. As time progresses of course, the steak cooks more and more on the stones which retain the heat. Unfortunately there is nowhere provided to take the stone off the heat once it has reached the cooking time you personally like.

Dessert was a triumph according to my table-mate - a Bailey's cheescake "to die for" were his words.

All in all - a great experience. Enjoyable and we felt value for money at £25 each. Definitely a very different experience, indeed one might say "Quirky Quigley's"!

This is the second time I have visited on the rocks at Quigley’s and again it didn't disappoint. The steak is truly delicious. I love the way I can cook it to my own liking and the choice of starters and desserts are great. It’s so great to have a place like this in Rugby and I can't wait to come back! Yum!!
