“Great hotel, great staff.”
Reviewed 10 April 2014

I stay in many hotels and people leaving poor reviews are really being picky. The hotel is very clean, the staff are great and the restaurant is lovely. I can't fault it. Yes the car park is under the hotel but its free and secure.

Room Tip: Stay on the 6th floor and above, its much quieter.

Staff all friendly and helpful, but the hotel was poor. This has the worst hotel entrance I have experienced anywhere in the world. As a driver, you park in a shoddy underground car park, with too many concrete pillars and poor lighting. The spaces are very small and I scraped my wheel arch on a pillar the second night, as the lots were so tight. Nice yellow streak there now. To get to reception, you must ascend narrow concrete stairs to a lonely security door with a smashed in buzzer/ speaker by the bins. Pretty intimidating stuff. I am an 18stone, karate black belt with a few years of Wing Chun on top, who used to fight in national tournaments, and I felt uneasy and exposed clutching my luggage trying to get into the hotel. Not sure my wife travelling alone would have felt happy there.
The room was OK, but I ordered a double room and was put in a room that had the sofa made up as a bed. This left me with no comfy seat to use for the 4 nights I was there. Also, as is typical of Premier Inns nowadays, in an attempt to save a few pence, they offer inadequate lighting in the rooms. I'm not a bat - give me light.
The bathroom has a faulty light, no working extractor fan and a broken toilet flusher. Also, strangely, the soap dispenser for the sink was by the towel rail, over the floor. Very odd.
In addition the hotel is part of an office block. You get issued a pass card to get into you room and as the reception is in a room off to the left of the front entrance and not visible at all from the car park entrance, you have no need to interact with the staff. It also means that anybody off the street can just walk in with no staff to challenge or monitor them. You can find yourself in a lift with people who may have no legitimate reason to be the building. One lift stunk strongly of cannabis one night. Might have been a guest, might not.
The restaurant served me hot food at 10:00 each night (when I got back from work) and I was very pleased with that. Good nosh, good beer and friendly and efficient staff.
Breakfast was up to scratch apart from on morning 3 my table had lettuce on it from my previous nights Ceasar salad and on morning 4, my baked beans were stone cold on an other wise hot plate of breakfast. To be fair to the staff, who were not troglodytes, the CHEAP low mood lighting (utterly and inappropriate at breakfast time) probably interfered with their ability to clean the tables thoroughly.
I stay in Premier Inns frequently because I like to think I get consistent service and accommodation. This one is strangely below standard. I will never go there again.

Room Tip: Stay in a different hotel

Can not fault our stay. Staff were very helpful, parked right outside, hotel was clean, beds were comfortable. We had the breakfast in the morning-kids eat free, it was lovely. Easy to walk into the centre of West Brom. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor, the views are amazing

I stay in hotels pretty much every week, many of them Premier Inns, so my 'poor' overall rating is based on a comparison between the visit to this hotel compared with my experience of other hotels in the chain.

That's not to say everything about the West Brom Prem is bad: as others have said, the staff are very friendly, the rooms are clean, and the location is good (but only if one simply has to visit the town). However, there were a number of problems during my stay:

1. The key cards repeatedly malfunctioned, requiring frequent reprogramming

2. Five light bulbs out in the bedroom / bathroom, reported to the front desk on day one; not fixed as promised and still not replaced by the time I checked out

3. Breakfast taken twice in the restaurant: Day One - greasy; Day Two - very overdone

4. Car parking free (a plus), although spaces are so tight that half have to be left unused

5. Finally, the worst feature of this hotel is the paper thin walls. At 2 a.m. this morning I 'treated' to an auditory performance of my neighbours' sexual exploits, extensive and varied, against a background of One Direction blaring out from what I assume was an iPod.

Obviously, the staff cannot be held responsible for the last two points, and to be fair I was offered a refund for the disturbed sleep, but worth bearing in mind for anyone who has difficulty parking or is a light sleeper. The other issues could easily be addressed but the fact that they weren't means this Premier Inn compares unfavourably with others in which I've stayed.

Room Tip: I suggest would-be guests check whether there are any rooms that do not have thin walls

Stayed here on route to B'ham airport to use the fantastic Vine Indian restaurant which is a 10 minute walk away. The area is a little rough but hotel makes up for it. Great value, comfortable rooms, good breakfast and great staff. The car park is also free to use. Recommended for a good curry and night out before your flight from B'ham airport.

A very clean, fresh hotel. Bedroom was spacious, bed very comfortable and power shower in the loo. The staff were friendly and helpful, there was a great choice at breakfast and the hotel is central to everything. Would definately stay again if in the area.
