Second time in the ocean hotel. Can't fault hotel and its restaurants. Try for the higher floors which have a nice sea view. The rooms are especially good for families with kids. Not a big fan of butlins but you can avoid the hi di hi if you stay out of the clubs.

I have been before to the ocean hotel which is within the Butlins park complex-and was lulled into it by the claim of the butlins butlers-whom,you would think,"buttle"for you, like a real butler-in actual fact, they do very little that the other hotel receptionists will do for you-they make dinner reservations, make bookings for shows onsite, and, despite the claim "they do so much more"they NEVER DID DO ANY MORE,AND DIDNT EVEN LOAD/UNLOAD LUGGAGE LIKE IT SAYS so I paid more for a service that wasn't so good at all-also,the hotel dining which costs more than standard or premium dining,DIDNT even include price of juice drinks or teas/coffees,as other dining areas do-the "dine around"offer doesn't cover ALL of there other restaurants, and some are cheaper places than what I paid for-and even though we were on top floor of hotel(5th floor)they didn't have proper locks with keys on balcony doorsthat you could lock and remove-,essential I would have thought with children-just a turning lock on balcony door and a notice saying to be responsible with children around/on balcony! also no locking bathroom doors, which, while stopping kids getting locked in bathroom,it doesn't provide any privacy for anyone else-e.g.adults or teenagers.all in all,am going off butlins Bognor regis resort and will not be returning for a long time, after going there every year for a while.

Room Tip: lower floor rooms are best, and NOT ones overlooking car park sidecorner ones are bigger

We booked two nights, room only, at the Ocean hotel as we were looking for a venue/resort for a big family trip next year. The hotel was very clean, tidy plus the rooms were very modern and impressive.

The facilities within the resort are good and suit all ages with plenty to do.

You do pay a premium for food and drink but you kind of accept it as the trade off for all entertainment/facilities you get.

Unfortunately the hotel had its fire alarm go off, not once but twice, due to a malfunction with the system.

The fire evacuation was a shambles and an engineer did not arrive until 6 hours after the first alarm had triggered.

Guests were placed in danger as we were held in and around the foyer of the hotel and not led to the designated evacuation area while staff tried to establish if the alarm was a real fire. The roll call was a waste of time as the poor guy undertaking it was constantly interrupted by fellow staff members on his radio and couldn't complete the process.

Because of the fun and games of that evening/early morning me and my family, like every guest I suspect, didn't sleep well that night and as it was our last night there we all left the resort feeling awful.

Though you could possibly argue that the hotel couldn't possibly know about the malfunction until it happened the evacuation process was a shambles with guests life being put in danger. On top of this even though a fault had been discovered an engineer was not called for over 6 hours, and as such, there was a second malfunction which once again disturbed my family's sleep. It also then meant that all the guests were allowed to return to their rooms after the first incident without the hotel knowing if the alarm system was actually in full working order.

I personally felt that Butlins could of and should of done more to assist us, look after us and put our safety first but there really was no excuse for the joke of what happened.

It was clear though the next day that the staff had been advised that no goodwill payment/goodwill gesture would be made and after further prolonged correspondence with the so called 'customer services' rather than admit errors were made they actually stated that their procedures were acceptable to West Sussex Fire Brigade and completely ignored the issues of that actual event.

In a nut shell it's an expensive place to come to but the facilities are good however BE WARNED if something goes wrong you'll be on your own plus they look for every opportunity to make themselves look good from your pain....We booked a week trip for 20 families else where.

Checked in to Butlins Resort on the 15th July for 1 week. Was immediately upgraded to the Ocean Hotel as a booking error had put myself (carer) and client (in wheelchair) on 2nd floor property with no lift. Professional seamless service was offered by the staff and the whole process was quite stress free.

On arriving at The Ocean, I was greeted but the reception staff and checked in extremely quickly. I was then taken and shown to my room on the first floor. I asked for a wheelchair, which was quickly delivered and the staff ("butler" service) assisted me with getting my bags up to the room. The room itself was large, huge bathroom (disabled accessible) and gorgeous balcony facing the sea. The room also had fantastic air conditioning which came in very handy as Bognor seemed to be going through a heat wave. The dining package was also fantastic. We had all our meals included at the Yacht Club buffet, which was the best choice we ever made.

My only gripe is about how the staff are treated. They work their socks off, ensuring that every need is met to the customers. I have yet to see a Butlins employee not smiling and they just always seem so helpful and friendly. I was very upset when I engaged in conversation with a bar tender who told me that the majority of "normal" workers are on £6.19 an hour (national minimum wage) and that they have under 18's working at £3-4 odd an hour. I think this is legalized slavery as the staff have to sometimes work in 30+ degrees heat, maintaining smiles and a high level of customer service. I think Billy Butlin would be turning in his grave if he realized that staff were being treated this way. I have noticed that the environment at Butlins, as well as the Butler service offered at this hotel, wouldn't particularly attract tips (partly due to clientèle) - so the staff don't even have this to count on.

The Ocean Hotel Butlins is a very nice hotel. Clean, with a helpful butler and reception service. Had a beautiful view overlooking the sea and the fairground. Rooms cleaned everyday, very very nice. Only problem we encountered was we were given a one king size bed and 2 bunk beds for a severly disabled 79 year old lady and a married couple. As a married couple, we had to sleep in bunk beds. Otherwise, the experience was refreshing, relaxing and very enjoyable. Food was of good standard, but to be fair, more of the same everyday. (3 out of 4 days, roast pork). Excellent bar, excellent friendly bar staff, very helpful, all trained in making and mixing of cocktails. Reception staff and butler staff were very friendly and helpful. Really made you feel special and very welcome. We will definitely go back to the Ocean Hotel and will always include a meal plan with booking as the restaurant can be quite expensive.

Hotel: brilliant. Very well designed, clean, modern.

Food: didn't book the dining plan but did eat there once for breakfast and once for dinner. Glad we had the freedom to eat elsewhere, food is ok but overpriced.

Funfair: rides that were open were great. 2 bigger rides closed all week with no sign of opening. Plus helter skelter has been removed!

Entertainment: considering the shows we went to were for our 4 year old daughter I was very impressed. One big negative - Centre Stage. It smells! Read the other reviews, it's not just me! I'd suggest they strip all carpets, upholstery etc and start again. Awful smell that doesn't go away, it ruined an excellent panto and Sesame Street show we watched there.

Splash world: very good, gets pretty busy. Like the funfair, should be open longer hours.

Would go again, but might try Skegness next time.

hotel is fantastic, i loved it.

we had a dolphin room with a balcony on the 4th floor, room 417
GOOD BITS,
clean towels daily even if you take them swimming they still replace ALL if you are out when they come in,
tea and coffee replenished daily, handy mini fridge, we used for milk as we don't like the long life milk,
DVD rental from the main reception, although we took our own our son wanted to watch a different one, they are free, but have to put a £10 deposit down, and Nintendo ds games are £20 deposit
The games room we only went in once (might be a grump, but i wasn't on holiday to play video games, great for the older children though)
always got straight into a lift and they play funky music too which my son loved.

BAD BITS about the hotel
-although we had a sea view on 2 sides straight ahead and to our right, we over looked the main hotel car park, and all the chalet roofs although this was no problem noise e.t.c it wasn't what we were expecting.
- the pillows were like bricks, very hard but this is all about preference, i still slept like a baby after a day of activities
-the last thing was the curtains are just a little too short for the patio doors so at 4.30am light comes flooding through the doors, i suppose this is OK in the winter but the summer not so good when a good nights sleep is in need.
children's bunk room was fantastic

AS for Butlins itself, the redcoats were great, although towards the end of the trip some of the other staff were getting ready for the adult only weekend, so were fed up with all the kids and happy clappy families, so we received a very unwelcoming reception especially on the go-karts when we asked if a single adult could ride in a double kart so we could all ride as a family and were told by one that would be fine, so we qued for 10 mins to be told no.

the center stage evening entertainment venue smelt like rotten cheesy feet, that was strong enough to make your toes curl, this was around the entrance to the shop the further away you got the better the smell got
if you don't Que early you don't get a very good seat either crammed up the back somewhere, or in a corner where you cant see whats going on
all the evening entertainment on our break was great not that we stayed till the end as our son just couldn't stay awake, prices for drinks were reasonable, a pint was the same as the local

there are way too many slot/fruit machines, but when there was hardly any day time entertainment, (you find yourself in them, which is what they want) i am assuming this is because we were on an out of season break, but in any case the money we paid there should have been more to do,
football was not great for my son as he has learning difficulties the other children didn't have a lot of patience for him, there was 12 kids doing it and all but 2 were in full football kits and boots, (the parents obviously come prepared for a football club) it wasn't just a bit of fun, it was serious stuff, parents shouting at their kids to get a grip and sort it out, not my idea of a great family holiday.

a lot of the daytime entertainment i found was aimed at young girls with Angelina ballerinas dance class, again not what my son would have enjoyed,
there were gaps of 2-3 hours where there was not a lot to do

height restrictions in the fun fair, i thought were a little OTT, but they are there to be safe i guess, the worst one we thought was the dodgems

food on the basic dining was not fantastic neither was it inedible, it was nice with a good choice every evening and a great choice of desserts, with salads and fruit always available, morning breakfast got boring very quickly but it filled a hole for the morning tea, coffee and juices all included
beachcomber in for lunch was lovely, always fresh and quick,

swimming pool is great fun, slides great, master blaster is worth waiting for if it does not break down, the kids will love it
i would stay again, more for the hotel than the resort

but we had fun and that's what its all about
