“Suspend your prejudice and book a Nelson Stateroom”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2013 via mobile

This was our very first time staying at Butlins and we were not sure quite what to expect as we had received mixed reviews from friends and when reading online. However we had a fantastic 7 nights and we even booked to return next summer.
The break was made on a variety of levels-
1. The Nelson Stateroom- the room was large with a balcony which had the most amazing view of the beach and due to the lovely weather we spent lots of time enjoying the view and sunshine. The room also has full length windows which gave a super view even at night and in the rain. The air conditioning was also a excellent plus.
2- the staff- who were all friendly and very helpful
3- the dine around - we opted for the hotel dining and this meant we could choose another restaurant to eat in the next evening (as long as you booked at least 24 hours in advance by getting a voucher from reception and chose one of the listed restaurants). We would strongly recommend trying Turner's. The food and service is excellent and it was a really relaxing meal unlike eating at the restaurant buffets. Kaleidoscope and Beachcomber were also good.
4- the activities - the free fairground rides, inside and outside, swimming, fencing, birds of prey display, putting Billy to bed and soft play were all hits with various members of our family. We also paid to see the circus (£5 pp) which was another hit. We hardly scratched the surface of the available activities as we did not see any of the free shows in any theatre or the skyline pavilion.
All round a great week away (which to be completely honest I was not expecting to say). Well done Butlins!

Top tip 1- get to breakfast at 7.30 as a long wait for a table with a hungry child/children is never going to make a good start to the day!
Top tip 2- save up for the spending money (especially for the arcades) you are going to need it!!
Top tip 3- want to get away for a bit? Drive to Littlehampton- great beach and even has a little bit of sand, rides and you can go crabbing. Highly recommended

If you think to book I strongly suggest NOT DO IT!!!!! Look somewhere else!!!

I stayed one week (lucky for work so I was staying only for sleeping!!!) in "GOLD" apartment. They are awful!!! they are the kingdom of damp, dust and the furniture is really tired and old.
They don't provide clean towels for your entire stay!!!! Also if you paid for housekeeping service!!!!
The floor carpeting was dirty and the sheets and pillows on the beds are cheap quality and sometime you don't feel comfortable to sleep because I have sensation that they are not clean at all. The front door normally is not working properly and to close and open you must slam it.

The housekeeping service is absolutely ridiculous, it's doesn't exist, they just re-arrange the beds, they are also eating in the apartment because we found on the floor some crumbs and packaging of food that we never bought it!!! On top of that we left some cookies in the kitchen table that has been eaten but the housekeeping staff, could you believe it!!!

If you make some complaint to customer service office, well.... don't expect any positive answer or help from them, they are just saying: "oh... I'm sorry about that" or "We will check and come back to you... no worry!"

I really don't understand why places like Butlins still exist as "Holiday Resort" and they are not cheap!!! we ended up paying more then £ 700/week for a place where normally I would paid not more than £ 80/week for the service you get and location, it's a legal robbery to customers!!!

My family and I stayed in the silver apartments for a week, it was very homely however, it was not the cleanest I've ever seen. But, this place is amazing. I loved every second of it! The redcoats are legendary! I think one of the best part of my stay was all the different entertainment each night. From, Katy Perry and Jessie J tribute, to MK1 and District 3 from X factor. If you go this year, you are very very lucky, you will most likely meet Redcoat Ashley and Redcoat Jake... the best redcoats ever in my opinion!! I really hope I can go again this year for a few days...If you go make sure you get yourself down on the dance floor and do the Choco-latte!!!

We stayed at the Ocean Hotel and could not of been any happier. Check in was a breeze and all the staff were extremely helpfully. The room was excellently presented and had very nice views over the seafront and fairground. We proceeded to explore the facilities and this did not disappoint and kept us all busy for the whole week. The park itself was very clean and tidy and had a very nice atmosphere. Food was great and entertainment impressive. I would also like to mention that my son had a small accident whilst not looking were he was going, but the medical staff and redcoats were extremely quick to respond and had him patched up and smiling soon after. All in all very impressed with our first visit to Bognor and have all ready booked the Christmas wonderland and possibly next summer. Excellent work :)

Room Tip: Recommend Ocean hotel with a sea view and balcony. A Dining plan is also recommended

IF you book i suggest you stay in one of the more modern hotels!!!!
Our 'silver' apartment was damp, mould was apparent in the bathroom, dust was everywhere, the front door didn't fit the frame without pulling it really hard and the furnishings were from a bedsit. Towels are not provided......
We were upgraded to a 'gold' apartment. Here, damp was apparent again, the sofa was sticky, the floor was dirty and the sheets and pillows on the beds felt damp. Again the door had to be slammed to be shut again due to the wood swollen up in the frame with the moist atmosphere.
Crumbs were all over the kitchen worktop and mould was under the sofa cushions.
And after that, there was the hairdryer that shorted out and set fire to my friends hair which was luckily put out very quickly.
We asked what was going to be done about it and we were told it had been checked and was fine! However they had removed it from the room anyway.......must have been fine then......
Finally after customer services checked that we were telling the truth about the damp, dirty room (again) we were upgraded again to the wave hotel. Finally dry conditions and rooms that were actually cared about.
If you eat go to papa johns which was lovely as the rest of the food we had was overpriced, bland and each time we ordered there was a long, long wait. In one restaurant (barely a quarter full) we had a 40 minute wait for a lukewarm sausage sandwich. other customers turned around and left rather than wait.
In general the redcoat service was good and friendly as well as helpful and the rides and games were fun and well run although bizzarely breakfast was at 10:30 each morning until checkout when suddenly it was then 10:00 and as were were not told till the day this took us by surprise.
When asked if we had enjoyed our stay we said 'no, we hadnt due to the dilapidated and dirty rooms and having to move twice as well as the issues with the restaurants. Response. "oh, ok then". Quality!
Suffice to say we will never go again and this was the worst holiday i have ever had.

Room Tip: Stay in the modern hotels!!!! silver and gold accommodation was disgusting and filthy. Room service...

Had a lovely time here with the family had a huge range of options and loved every minute of my stay. On returning to the office this week people were genuinely surprised to hear just how good Butlins has become. Stayed in the Silver Standard appartments which were fine. Self catered from the in resort supermarket - good prices - nice stuff and 'did' the entertainment. I was really refreshed after my holiday in the relaxing atmosphere with exciting things to do. Nice people here - staff and guests and my kids were awestruck!
