We've been to Butlins quite a few times now but have to admit that we do it on our terms - we only stay in Gold accommodation or better (we won't slum it), we only go on adult weekends (we're now past the stage where we need to tolerate other people's screaming, uncontrolled kids) and we don't bother with the entertainment (which is usually not top-rate and is invariably populated by drunken stag-do's and hen parties). Because we've been frequently before we get many Butlins offers through the post and this three-night break for £20 per person per night gave us a beautiful, top-class room with a sea view at a silly budget price. This allowed us enjoy our main passion - dining out in decent restaurants around town.

I've stayed at Butlins a couple of times but previously had used the apartments. I decided to treat me and my two year old to a nice hotel stay for 4 nights in May.
The hotel itself is nice, with big, clean rooms and we had a sea view.
The check in process was hard work as, despite arriving after the allocated time no rooms were ready for over an hour. However, the resident charactors were on hand to amuse my daughter and the free refreshments were welcome.
The reason I didn't score it excellent is because the room had no chain/bar on the door which means small children can wander out by themselves (and this hotel is designed for families with small children) and with the childrens beds next to the door it wasn't hard to imagine them doing this if you got distracted. I was also expecting a door on the childrens 'den' area so when i realised it was just an alcove I was disappointed.
The food in the restaurant was excellent though, and so was the service. My daughter loved the free charactor breakfast.
The beds are horrendously uncomfortable, new matteresses needed all round!
Next time I think we'll just have an appartment for half the money.
Butlins is a great place to go with small children as it's safe with loads of shows and activities for them to do. Only tip I'd give is to go half board unless you are sure you'd cook in your appartment as food is very expensive in the cafes and bars.

We have for the past 4 years stayed at one of the hotels on the Bognor Regis site of Butlins. The entire site is kept remarkably clean, the food at the Shoreline this year has been beyond excellent. The staff are always happy to help and deal with any concerns immediately. We have a 4 yr old and 6 yr old and they adore Butlins. In one day we went swimming (lots of fun water slides and wave pool), went on the fair, the kids played in the soft play, we then saw a pantomine, and then after tea caught an amazing fireworks display: then back to the fair and shows in the pavillion until the kids fell into bed exhausted but happy! We also another day saw a show on animals and went to an illusionist act. All of this was free and is a great way to see if the kids like the theatre without shelling out lots of money. The shows are fantastic and would cost a fortune if seen in a regular theatre. Fantastic, good value holiday

Room Tip: Go for the rooms at the far end of the corrider and then you don't get disturbed by people passi...

This was our first trip to Butlins so we decided to splurge and book into an on-site hotel. We had the choice of Shoreline for “young children”, the Wave Hotel for older children and the Ocean Hotel which is the more luxurious and “pampering” hotel. With a 7 and 8 year old we decided to book into the Shoreline, upgrading at the last minute to half board.

We arrived at 1.00 and tried our luck with reception to see if our room was ready and joy of joy it was! We made our dinner reservations there and then (eating at the South Coast buffet restaurant) and also booked our Character Breakfast for the Sunday which takes place at 7.45 at Papa Johns just opposite.

The room was lovely – a standard Hooks Cabin - the kids den had bunkbeds and a telly with DVD and our room was large with a mini fridge, telly, dvd player and a nice sitting area with views over the play area and a sea view! I did write to request a sea view before we went as it was my birthday during my stay and they very kindly obliged! Although they didn’t affect us, the little touches for those with toddlers were apparent! Corner protectors on the tables, plugs blocked off, baby sized loo seat, stool for the sink, rubber duck etc. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel for those with young children.

Meals

Breakfast in the South Coast Restaurant within the hotel was great. Self service full English, cereals, fruit, breads, cakes etc including a dedicated children’s counter and the staff were wonderful. The Character Breakfast which is included for guests of South Coast was fabulous with the two dinosaur characters making an appearance and walking round and spending time with each child individually.

Dinner at the South Coast was amazing. Carvery, stir fries, pasta station, salad, soup, bread and the desserts were to die for! Unlimited ice cream factory too! One thing to note, ONLY WATER is available at dinner with your dining package – all other drinks, including soft drinks, are chargeable. The chefs are very friendly and chatty to everyone which was nice.

We also asked reception for a voucher to eat one of our meals at “The Deck” restaurant which was amazing too! Much larger and less intimate than the South Coast, but a lot more variety including a burger station. Soft drinks are included at The Deck, unlike at South Coast where you have to pay extra. The Deck is a premium restaurant so you may have to pay £1.50 per person supplement (although for some reason we weren’t asked to which is a bonus!)

Entertainment

We went to three shows – The Lazy Town Show, Beauty and the Beast Pantomime and Guinness World Records. All took place in Centre Stage where there are ample bars (including slushes which we loved!!). You need to start queuing about half an hour before for front row seats so bring a book! Highly recommend all three but Guinness World Records was our favourite. Hugely entertaining.

Splashworld was fabulous!! Get there for opening at 9.30 so you can get all the slides done before it gets busy! There’s Space Bowl and a straight forward slide for 8+, a slide for 5+ and then the aqua slides. There’s also a slide where you travel in a boat but there’s a 1.1metre height restriction and hugely popular so get there early! Warning – if you go on Space Bowl there’s a chance you may make yourself look an idiot as you tumble from the bowl into the water……..very good entertainment to stand and watch how gracefully (or not as the case may be) people manage to fall…….

Fair was good (albeit a little tired – they’re building a new one for 2013 apparently!). Indoor rides for younger children also good, especially in November when it’s freeeezing! Maximum height on the indoor rides is 1.5metres.

My daughter had the fairy makeover which (although a lot quicker than I thought!) was very good and she looked fab!! Make sure you book in advance! The kids also did the bungee trampoline which they enjoyed (£4 each).

Fireworks were spectacular! Just wish I’d thought to purchase a coffee from Costas to warm me up as it was sooooo cold!

Arcades were great for the kids – lots of 10p and 2p machines. The kids loved family bingo which was 30p a game and you’re playing for tickets. Hubby was happy that the pub showed the football.

Really enjoyable weekend and we’d love to go again at some point soon. If I’ve missed anything and you have a question, please feel free to message me !

Firstly this is a review of the Shoreline hotel not Butlins resort itself which i will post seperately and allow people to decide wether its for them or not.

I have been fortunate enough to stay at the shoreline hotel previously in 2006 and therefore can compare it to when it was relatively new and the only hotel on resort.

On both occaisions i have stayed in columbus quarters so again have the benefit of a previous visit for comparison.

- check in was speedy, welcome drinks and Billy bear on arrival. Clear instructions about breakfast / dinner times and service with a smile.

- we are 2 ad 2 children and a baby and room had ample space. Kids had own sleeping area with tv and dvd which was great for them. Plenty of storage in the room. Good hanging space and shelving.

- tv and dvd in adults bedroom area. Two leather effect armchairs and a coffee table. Decent minifridge. Kettle, tea and coffee and cups / spoons supplied. Hairdryer attached to wall in front of dressing table.

I must say the room was very clean and in good decorative order. Considering the hotel has been going for seven years the decor seems really fresh bright and modern. Bathroom was very clean with excellent shower and gallons of hot water. Lovely touches with kids toilet seat and step. Only small faults i could find were armchairs peeling on arm areas where used alot and shower curtain rail rusty (very minor faults) which show how good the place is

Breakfast at hotel - you get what you pay for. . .I am not a food snob and the cereals were great as was the fruit salad and yoghurt. The pastries were cheap and mass produced (croissants were bread made to look like croissants) cooked breakfast is what you expect in a mass catering environment. Cheap sausages etc. A nice touch was omlettes and pancakes made to order which were quite tasty. Fruit juices are the concentrate type but tea and coffee was drinkable.

If you have young kids this is a great base to stay. Very clean and tidy and staff all very welcoming and happy to help. Great location in resort (closest to all the action) hotel is just as good as when we stayed in 2006 and i would recomend as the place to stay in butlins.

We went to this Butlins hotel as a large group for an adults 80s weekend, and I was wondering how I had come to be talked into it!
However, the hotel and the food in the restaurant were excellent and the value for money was great - although that was due to some of the party having stayed previously.
The room was lovely and clean, spacious and with everything you needed. The bed and pillows were good and the shower extremely powerful. Everything you need from a hotel room for one or two nights.
The restaurant food was surprisingly good, although the service could have been better on the second night. We also tried Turners restaurant for lunch on the sunday - this was great food and good value for money.
Unfortuantely teh 80s music was a bit hit and miss. But overall a good time was had.

Room Tip: Our room had quite a good view of the sea and overlooked the children's playground. Very noisy...
