Had the perfect stay with my husband and one year old. Staff can't do enough without being in your face. Restaurant serves delicious food with such a nice atmosphere and most importantly they got the lighting right (so many restaurants don't!). Spa was lovely and perfect for us that they had a slot for family swimming.

My wife and I make a point of getting one weekend away a year without our 3 kids. Last weekend we visited Bailiffscourt on a recommendation. We were impressed and have already recommended to several friends. All staff - reception, restaurant, spa - were very friendly and professional. The spa was great, grounds are smart, and we enjoyed a couple of bracing walks along the beach (10 mins walk down the road). Best of all was dining: drinks in lounge before eating in smart candlelit dining room. Brilliant service. DELICIOUS food. We've eaten in plenty of M- starred restaurants and this was top notch. We just had the standard 3 courses which was plenty. Room was good (but not as special as rest of hotel).

This is just about the last word in taking a building of immense character and using it as the platform for excellent service. A spacious bedroom full of character, including the four poster bed, matched with a modern bathroom with generous space and all modern conveniences ( including a great shower). Staff attentive and pleasant. Restaurant menu not quite my preferred range of options but that probably reflects my plebeian tastes. This place is expensive but it delivers a quality package that others admire to but do not often reach.

Room Tip: Choose a heritage rather than a contemporary room to get the full effect.

I stayed here with my wife and daughters and could only agree with the last reviewer. A very underwhelming experience and definitely trading on former glories. I have visited periodically for lunch over 25 years and they simply haven't moved on. This is the first time we have stayed, although my brother had good memories of his stays from the 90s.

Firstly, the rooms (at over £200 per night) were cramped, dusty and dirty with old-fashioned, oppressive (and worn) furnshings. The inadequate bathroom contained a bath fit for a 4-year old child and a shower that dribbled down your back out of one side of the shower head. Frankly, the rooms in this part of the hotel need a total overhaul and should not be offered at these prices.

The restaurant serves over-blown and poorly executed "Michelin-wannabe" food and the service was slow and extremely "hit and miss". The reception staff gave the impression everything was a bit too much trouble (excuses like "it's my first week here" (do I care?) and were not interested in our complaints.

I can't remember the last time I experienced such poor value-for-money and I stay in different parts of the country, spending on average 1-2 nights in a hotel per week. I am fascinated by some of the positive reviews on this and other sites, as these people must operate in a parallel dimension!

Room Tip: Stay in the house if you must stay here. I would avoid altogether and stay at Amberley Castle.

Had dinner here recently , whilst in past I complained about service , this time it was all excellent , and timely , the only fault was the price ! £161 for two pre dinner drinks and a set price 3 course dinner with half bottle of red and two bottles of water , coffee and petite fours for two people, was beyond pricey !

Room Tip: mind the restaurant prices !

Had a great stay. Staff were very welcoming and efficient. Refreshing to see so many younger people working there and how engaged they were in their work and with the guests. Food was delicious. Setting lovely. Room was too hot and the thermostat in the room had no effect. Handle fell off the shower. Front door to the annex we were staying in wouldn't shut so was banging in the wind all night. These were minor things though and did not detract from the enjoyment of our stay.

Our third stay at Bailiffscourt,(although we have eaten there on several occasions). The standard was extremely high. I can't understand the previous reviewer's comments. We were helped with our bags on arrival and all the staff from porters to managers were most helpful, friendly and polite. Our room was excellent with a most comfortable mattress and pillows. Everything was very clean. The only thing lacking for me was a full length mirror in the bedroom. The food was of a very high standard and the restaurant staff went out of their way to provide friendly and efficient service. We also enjoyed the swimming pool but didn't try any spa treatments.Sadly, the bad weather prevented us from enjoying the grounds this time so we just relaxed. This was our Ruby Wedding break and was so enjoyable from start to finish. We will definately return in the near future. Thanks to everyone.
