The staff were charming, wasnt too full or too empty, ther service was up to speed. It was a beatifully decorated restaurant, the atmosphere, highly reccomended. The food was extravagant, left feeling like a stuffed chicken.

“Crisp and modern in a lovely old pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2014

Very smart in a relaxed way. Well used, so booking needed for weekend evenings & Sunday lunch. Lovely garden at the back with a weeping willow & picnic tables. Some interesting tastes and ideas on the menu. Family friendly, and very good at Christmas!

“So sad to see a thriving pub go downhill”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2014

6 of us went for a friday lunch - having previously had some good ones. It seems to be under new management, unfortunately! Despite rather few tables being occupied the one waitress, who was terribly nice and working very hard, took ages to take our orders and was unable to get our drinks order right first time and didn't know what a gunner cocktail was (ginger beer, ginger ale and bitters). They are trying but the place seems very under-staffed. The food took quite a while to arrive and two of us were very disappointed by the portion size (a main fish dish came resembling a starter) when this was pointed out the price was reduced and complementary chips produced. The burgers were good and fresh, the ham and eggs disappointing as the ham was a thin slice of mass produced pink and rubbery. The chips were delicious.

The pub is very attractive and in a good location. More waiting staff are needed and they need to up their game food-wise as there are lots of excellent local pubs in the locality.

Thank you for your interesting comments. It has taken me a little while to respond as I have been visiting local pubs asking for a Gunner. It has come as little surprise that out of 6 pubs no one knew what it was. The best response I got was go to a cocktail bar not a country pub! I have taken and acted upon your comment about our Smoked Haddock dish, the portion has been adjusted accordingly. As regards our service, when customers book a table we expect them to arrive roughly at the time booked. Unfortunately on the lunchtime you mention a party booked, sat down an hour late and then announced "Quick we need to order now as we are so hungry"! We do try to cater for customers who do this and occasionally it does throw our service cycle. Sorry that we did not live up to your expectations on this visit, should you wish to call me next time I will endeavour to make sure your visit is more enjoyable and the barstaff have a cocktail list.

“Excellent cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 January 2014

We went here for a birthday dinner with friends yesterday evening having never been here before and were very impressed with both the quality of the food and the service. Very pleasant country pub with a real log fire, all made for an enjoyable evening. Give it a try!

“Pleasant enough - room for improvement ”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 November 2013 via mobile

I booked this venue for an annual get-together for 8 of us old school mates and husbands.
The service was very good and we were warmly welcomed by the bar staff. As soon as we sat down by the fire with a drink to wait for the others to arrive the fire was promptly stoked.
We eventually went to the table where we chose from the Beth extensive menu and specials board. I had 2 game dishes which is a great treat in the autumn when in season. The starter of rabbit and chorizo terrine was very nice but the main if pheasant was a quite dry. My guess is they pre-prepared it then re-heated it. We didn't do dessert but they looked very good.
I would definitely go back as I have friends in the area.
