We stayed just one night for a romantic getaway. The old nineteenth century manor has been knocked about and it shows. Modern, sterile-looking wings have been clamped to the sides of the lovely original manor to create a sprawling complex with not much charm. The rooms are decorated in a slightly tacky 'boudoir' chintzy vibe and, despite cleanliness and the usual mod-cons don't deserve 5 stars. An iPod dock in each room would be a welcome addition.

The hotel hosts nearly 100 weddings a year and if you spend a weekend, you will certainly be sharing space with one. Whilst we drank tea in the drawing room, a bride and her half-cut pals tumbled through the corridors. The website boasts intimate nooks and crannies for lovers to get lost in but where these were we couldn't discover.

We ate in the Camellia restaurant and the food and service were excellent, if not especially good value for money.

We took time to wander the extensive grounds and admired some beautiful plants and views. The much-trumpeted views of the South Downs are not worth writing home about however.

The best thing about South Lodge? The staff and service. This is far from a luxury Five Star gem, however, and the management need to seriously consider whether they're running an exclusive hotel or a wedding factory. If you're booking a big event I can imagine you'd be well catered for; if you're looking for a first class romantic hotel experience, look elsewhere.

We visited this hotel for lunch on Easter day. A family mixed group who were all well catered for and all of whom thoroughly enjoyed the event.
The quality of food and presentation was superb, the staff friendly and helpful, the surroundings beautiful and we even managed to walk in the grounds before the showers arrived.
We will certainly be back.

Very much one for the grown ups who fancy a bit of a splurge. Beautiful hotel, in beautiful grounds, and probably the best hotel room I have ever stayed in.

For: Comfortable junior suite with great shower, Bose sound system, TV in bath and very well sound proofed; amazing service; snug rural location; overall classy feel; kudos; delicious breakfast; ample parking.

Against: Nothing.

Verdict: If you want a snug, classy, traditional but yet contemporary hotel in the Sussex countryside look no further. This is the finest hotel I've visited in the south, and that's why we've chosen it for our wedding.

Absolutely stunning hotel, the staff are so friendly and attentive, the food is not like the French but it was the British cooking I have tasted. The rooms are something special, really enjoying our stay. Loved the little lamb to put outside the door for a not disturbing sign.

Stayed here for one night in a suite, sir Edmund. The suite was on the top floor so we had sloping ceilings which for us wasn't a problem but if you were over 5ft 10 it could cause problems, however, having said that the room was enormous with a lovely lounge area overlooking parkland, a huge bed and fab bathroom. Went to the wine cellar and tried the wine dispensing machine which was fun and a good way to try different wines, then had a drink in the bar prior to going into dinner at 8.30pm in the camelia restuarant, food was heavenly and cooked to perfection our only gripe was they had run out of the dessert my husband had chosen and also his second choice which was disappointing. We then went back to the bar where a lovely man was playing an organ and singing, very unobrusively I may add and I had one of the nicest cocktails I've ever had the joy to taste, cannot remember the name but it was vodka, creme da violets and champagne!! Breakfast in the morning was gorgeous, and we had a table in the window with the sun streaming in. Overall a lovely night away and we will be back.
