“Way ahead of the rest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2014

I stay at many hotels globally but South Lodge has something that many lack and it is called "class"

I regularly use South Lodge for business and I have never had any reason to complain because the Staff are Attentive, The food is good and the general feel of the building is amazing.

Room Tip: You need to go and visit South Lodge. I could move in tomorrow.

Dear fads100,

Thank you ever so much for your splendid review following your recent stay.

It is always a pleasure for the team here to read a ‘seasoned traveller’ rating South Lodge so highly.

It is lovely for you to describe the team here as attentive, the food excellent, as well recognising the amazing setting with our 1880’s house and extensive grounds.

The team and I look forward to seeing you again before too long.

We were recommended to stay in this hotel by Nyetimber who we were visiting.
We dropped off our luggage and car en route to travel over to Nyetimber.
What a warm welcome from the lovely Ellie, who speedily checked us in and gave us a tour of this lovely homely country house hotel.

On our return after a delicious chilled bottle of Nyetimber we took the ten course tasting menu in the pass. What an experience. A modernly styled and decorated Michelin starred restaurant set in the hotel's kitchen , really well thought out. The chefs served and explained each course. The food was quite awesome, so were the front of house team, vas co looked after us very well. We chatted to all of the chefs including the master chef winner who was a really grounded knowledgable and thoroughly nice guy. Little johny on work experience stole the girls hearts and new every complex dishes ingredients, a chef for the future. Great wine list. All staff superb.

A GReat nights sleep in a spacious and comfortable room with a king size bed. Bathroom fine but no walk in shower although our friends had a suite and that did.

Breakfast was delicious.

No spa but has a gym, would love them to have had a pool.

We will return and can't wait to do so.

Thanks South Lodge team

Dear HERSHAMBOY,

Thanks for your lovely review and for staying with us following your trip to Nyetimber.

We are very proud of our association with Nyetimber sparkling wine, so much so that Nyetimber is our house pour. The main vineyard is located in West Chilington, just a short distance away in the South Downs. I personally love the Blanc de Blanc! Our restored Victorian wine cellar is a great place to taste Nyetimber, or perhaps whilst enjoying afternoon tea on our terraces?

I am pleased you enjoyed a very warm welcome from Ellie as well as her tour of South Lodge before visiting your bedroom. It is wonderful to read of your experience in The Pass and we are all delighted the service and food was spot on.

All of us at South Lodge look forward to seeing you again soon.

All the best,

Well, what can I say...

Me and my fiancée booked a night to stay at the south lodge, to celebrate our engagement. When making the booking I filled out the part where it asks for any requirement. I simply told them we were celebrating our engagement and when arriving at the hotel, they gave us the brilliant news, they'd upgraded us. They really did spoil us, we were up graded to the Deluxe Junior Suite. This room is beautiful. The very kind and pleasant hotel receptionist then showed us to our room and what a room it was. We had a marble bathroom, jacuzzi bath, kingsize bed with living room area. Use of ipad, and choice of different fragranced pillows. What a treat for us!

We then had reservations at the Pass restaurant. This was a lovely experience. We went all out and had the 10 course taster menu. Very elegantly presented, we were given each course with a personal detailed explanation by the chef. This was a real treat, never experiencing anything like it before, it was a wonderful evening tasting lovely food, quirkily prepared in the kitchen right in front of us.

We then finished the night enjoying some amazing cocktails in the bar.

Perfect way to spend our engagement.

You never know, we may now be back to celebrate our wedding.

Thank you South Lodge for a memorable stay.

Highly recommend!!

Dear Robbiekeys,

Thank for such a fantastic and comprehensive review! Many congratulations on your engagement and thank you for allowing us to play a small part in your celebrations.

Your bedroom sounds quite magnificent, as does dinner in The Pass followed by cocktails. Thank you for taking the time to post the photo’s too. That one snap shot of The Pass does really capture the atmosphere and excitement.

If we can help in any way with your wedding plans please do not hesitate to contact me at the hotel.

Best wishes and renewed congratulations,

I was made to feel welcome and at home from the moment I parked amongst the Astons and Bentleys, with impeccable service and hospitality. A formal meal was excellent. my room overlooked a walled garden and was a tasteful conversion - a huge space excellently used and enough fruit to fulfill my 5 a day for a week.

Room Tip: i doubt there are bad ones

Dear Amhurst99,

Thank you for your lovely words following your recent stay.
Our restored walled Victorian kitchen garden is a wonderful asset. Paul, our Head Gardener and Lewis, our Executive Chef work together to ensure year round produce for the kitchen. The kitchen garden even has 6 of our own Sussex Chickens for eggs. It is certainly worth a visit.
I am pleased your welcome was special and the team here at South Lodge were on hand at every step of the way.

The team and I look forward to seeing you again in the future.

It was a great privilege to be a guest at the South Lodge.
From the moment you arrive you feel like you arrived to visit your family. The very warm welcome, roaring fire in the lobby, old photos on the walls, all so familiar- Have I been here before?
As you trying to take in all the atmosphere of the place, your luggage is swiftly taken from you and you are on the journey to your room.
My room, called "Seven Sisters", was in the newer part of the house. It was very spacious with its own terrace. The view was breathtaking.
One of the best features of the room must be the big bathroom with TV and very very very spacious walk in shower.
Let's not forget the Minty the Sheep which guards your door if you don't want to be disturbed!
Food was excellent to say the least. Their head chef won the BBC Masterchef: Professionals 2013 so the food is their passion and it shows throughout.
I would really like to thank David- The General Manager, Joe- Guest Services Manager and the rest of the team for making my stay memorable.
I will definitely be back but with my family this time.
Thank you!!!!

We do like to create a lovely welcome to South Lodge and ensure of guests are immediately relaxed and confident they have made the right decision in joining us.

I had the pleasure of staying here for two nights whilst attending a course with several others. We all had an amazing time! The hotel and rooms/suites are beautiful and very well equipped with some specials like tablets for all needed information and with international newspapers loaded on them, Minky-the-DND-sheep, huge bathrooms with a TV above the tub and many other great features. The views and the surroundings are breathtaking and the food excellent! Special mention to the staff: everyone was very friendly and welcoming - the whole stay felt like a special treat. Thank you so much to David and his entire team.

This is a stunning period building and the hotel is impeccably run buy a professional team of excellent staff. You would only be happy here if you want some privacy and seclusion although the room we were in only had the original crittall windows with no insulative value so the wedding party drinking on the patio beneath kept us awake until 3am.
The only other thing missing at this price is a health suite (sauna and steam / pool) which at this price is almost an expectation.
The only complaint would be the automatic 10% service charge applied to everything whereas one would expect the charges already amply to cover the services provided. A late check out also costs you extra!
The above said we had a great weekend and despite the cost we would certainly recommend and return.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor as every floor board creaks. However NOT above / at the function room end when t...

Dear Markbinherts,

Thank you for your review following your stay at South Lodge. I am delighted you enjoyed your time with us.

Service here means a lot to us all as we all want to go that extra mile to deliver exceptional experience to our guests. It is lovely to see you recognising this by describing the service an impeccable and professional.

I am sorry you were disturbed by noise outside your bedroom. Naturally, there should be no noise disturbance at that time and I will follow up with my colleagues who should have ensured a quiet night. I will of course make a note on your profile to ensure there is not a repeat of this in future.

We do offer a complimentary late check out where our availability allows. After a certain time however we do apply a small charge as the bedroom may not be able to be serviced and let for the following evening.

All of our food and beverage charges do include a service charge. This is very common practice in the hospitality industry and all service charged is split evenly amongst the entire team.
We do have plans for a spa, so please do watch this space!

The team and I look forward to welcoming you back.

All the best wishes,
