South Lodge is a haven of opulence and tranquility that will restore calm to any soul. It's friendly and subtly attentive staff, beautifully appointed rooms and divine atmosphere make this a luxury you shoud afford. Is there a downside? Well, a large glass of Rioja was £14 but the food was first rate.

Attended a wedding on the Saturday at this elegant hotel. Stayed in a superb room overnight on Friday and Saturday. Attended an informal hot buffet on Friday night which was very good and plentiful. Atmosphere was relaxed and service was excellent. Breakfast was very good. Explored the substantial grounds on Saturday morning - ideal for a walk or run if that way inclined. Wedding ceremony and reception benefited from spacious accommodation and access to the patio areas especially with the fine weather. Food on all occasions was excellent - mini fish and chips was the star of the disco buffet! Sunday buffet breakfast for wedding guests was provided in a spacious private room which allowed farewells to be done in a relaxed manner. Only drawback was the cost of drinks at the bar but to be expected in such surroundings.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.

I am delighted your stay at South Lodge was a positive one and the wedding you attended was a success.

Our 93 acres of grounds are looking splendid at the minute and are well worth an adventure! I am pleased you enjoyed the wedding breakfast too.

Had a Nice weekend at the hotel. There were a couple of weddings going on but they are in a separate wing so it was ok. Our room was in the new part and was at the back on the first floor with wonderful views of the downs. Nice big rooms with the 5 star feel. The food was great and breakfast out on the terrace was also very good. We had good weather so we could enjoy the grounds.

Room Tip: An upstairs room at the back with views of the grounds and with the downs in the distance would be m...

I stayed at South Lodge for two nights for an industry conference and didn't want to leave! Amazing staff, gorgeous, elegant, historic building and the food is quite delicious. The rooms are spacious with every possible convenience. I was in the 'newer' part of the hotel, which meant it still had the old charm, but with a giant bathroom, separate tub and built in TV, a giant walk in shower with FIVE shower heads, comfortable bed, special pillows you can order (and of course I did!!) and not overpriced room service. Would go back in an instant.

Apologies for the late review but it is a review worth doing. My fiancé and I stayed at the South Lodge Hotel back in February 2014 and whilst it was not a cheap stay, it was worth every penny for the quality, ambience and experience of staying here. From arrival at reception to check in right through to departure, the service and experience was exceptional. We were personally escorted to our room by a member of staff and shown where everything was en-route. Our meal in the evening was fantastic, as was breakfast but the main 'wow factor' was the room we stayed in. Admittedly it was a mini suite but well worth the upgrade. My fiancé, who spends her life in hotels around the world was bowled over by this room and even took photos of it. As somebody who is abroad every week in hotel rooms, this says everything! If they ever manage to build a Spa for this place it would be totally perfect!! Would thoroughly recommend!!

Very friendly and warm welcome, efficient check in and a lovely room overlooking the garden. Luckily the workmen driving dumper trucks and spreading topsoil just outside the window had stopped for the day - so beautifully quiet and a promising outlook once the planting is finished. Afternoon tea on the terrace in the sunshine seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up - although service was painfully slow, despite there being very few guests. Dinner in the Camellia Restaurant was the highlight (and the reason we went). Had high expectations from the hype around head chef Steven Edwards - winner of Masterchef 2013. Not disappointed. An interesting menu, based on as much locally sourced produce as possible and with creative interpretations and presentation. The made-to-order tarte tatin for dessert was to die for - and possibly the best we've ever tasted! Luckily the modest fish main course left enough room to polish it off!

Dear Alison W,

Happy birthday and thank you for your marvellous comments.

I am pleased our welcome set the tone for your visit and you had a lovely room overlooking the South Downs. Dinner sounds wonderful. We are all so proud of Steven’s achievements on MasterChef. I completely agree with you, the tarte tatin is indeed a cracking dish.

My husband and I stayed at South Lodge to visit family and also Wakehurst Place and Nymans nearby. We felt welcome upon arrival and stayed in a lovely room overlooking the South lawns. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed lunch, pre dinner drinks and breakfast on the terrace. Good food, good service and a lovely location all made our 2 night visit really enjoyable. We hope to return before too long.

Room Tip: We believe a spa is to built shortly and did not use fitness centre so have posted average on score...

Dear Paul B,

Thank you for your kind words and for describing us as lovely!

We are very fortunate to be located close to some of Britain’s finest gardens not to mention the charming South Downs National Park. With our own 93 acres, including lakes, kitchen garden, rockery and fine collection of plants, I am delighted you were able to enjoy our grounds and gardens too. There is nothing quite like al fresco drinks and dinner overlooking the marvellous South Downs.

The team and I very much look forward to welcoming you back.
