“What a find!”
Reviewed 22 February 2014 via mobile

What a wonderful place this is. Managed to find a couple of days to get away and wanted to explore chichester and surrounding area. Received a warm friendly welcome and shown to our beautifully decorated room. Very comfortable king size sleigh bed, modern ensuite and a lovely view. Food here was fantastic. Locally sourced and plenty of it. Can highly recommend the steak and kidney pudding but be warned, you need a hearty appetite! We will look forward to staying here again
Thank you John and Lisette.

Chequers is currently undergoing upgrade by new owners. The building has charm, character and is in an ideal location for walking and touring. We were made to feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The menu varied and delicious, very generous helpings. if travelling with dog excellent walks by hotel. Cosy lounge with open fire was very welcoming on arrival.

If I lived in London, this is the kind of place I'd like to come to stay for weekends - probably every weekend, actually. It is an old coaching inn that has lost none of its original character, thanks in the main to the way the owners have done the place up with eclectic furniture and a wonderful choice of fabrics. 'Shabby chique' would be the way that the more flippant would describe it, but what the owners have done is to capture the true essence of what the place has been over the centuries. The bedrooms are really comfortable without one eyesore of contract furnishing, the restaurant is light and airy but needs a big jersey on a frosty night, the food is both plentiful and delicious, and, for us all, a big party of seven, the owners could not have done more. I lacked a 'figure of eight' plug for my computer, asked if they happened to have one at reception, and I could tell from the steely look in John's eye and the way that he ripped assorted cables from desk drawers, filing cabinets, and the hotel safe, that he was not going to rest until he had found one. It was delivered to me within ten minutes.

Listen, just go there and see what I mean.

My wife and I stopped at the Chequers Hotel for a weekend break for our Ruby wedding anniversary. The hosts were welcoming and very friendly, the room was very comfortable and the locally sourced food was delicious. In all it made for a lovely special weekend. Thanks to everyone there.

We really enjoyed our meal here. The service was very friendly and the menu was varied. The dining room may well have a great view in the summer, but we were there on a wild autumn night, and there was something very cosy about eating a good meal by candlelight with a storm raging outside!

I'm a vegetarian, and I was slightly disappointed with the options for veggies. That said, it gave me more space for pudding. There was a selection of traditional pudds: the crumble was fantastic and a proper size too.

We spent one night here on business, I'm vegetarian and hubby is vegan and it's not easy finding somewhere who can cope with vegan visitors.

We had a lovely unusual shaped room on the ground floor right next to a busy road, I was expecting to be kept awake with either the traffic or church bells from the church over the road. I wasn't, the hotel had secondary double glazing which blocked out most of the outside noise, I'm not sure it would have been possible to keep windows closed had it been hot outside though.

I had pre-warned the hotel that we would like a vegan evening meal and they did roasted Mediterranean veg with tomato sauce and rice, I had a vegetarian tart, salad and chips. Both very adequate and large portions.

The bed was comfortable and the en-suite had a powerful shower, which is sadly lacking in most hotels. One thing which would have been nice is a soap tray in the shower to put soap or shower wash on, it's not good to keep having to put them on bottom of tray whilst you wash yourself. Cleanliness was ok

The wifi was rubbish on the eve we arrived, but by next morning it was working fine, I think wifi connection depends upon where you are in the hotel.

We had a business's meeting next day and although the did make salad sandwiches for my vegan hubby, they only provided 4 small triangle vegetarian sandwiches between two people, but did lots of meat and fish etc.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the very busy road if you are the type bothered by road noise, if you are veget...

Stayed here with friends for 1 night in August 2013. We were heading to a wedding at Grittenham Barn and although there isn't a huge selection of accommodation in the area, we needn't have worried.

We booked via LateRooms as it was an area none of us had been to before. Having said that, the hotel was easy to find - once you're in Pulborough, it's sign posted (brown tourist sign). There's a car park for patrons of the hotel right outside and it's set a few metres off the road so was safe. Although we got there slightly before check-in time, we were able to check-in straight away, which was really appreciated.

We had a family room on the ground floor (one double & a single bed) and other friends had a twin upstairs, both of which were ensuite. Our room on the ground floor was a good size and though larger luggage might've been hard to accommodate there, it was fine for us. The bedlinen and rooms themselves were all immaculately clean. The beds were comfy and although we were on the ground floor, we didn't have any problem with noise from other guests (especially in the morning as we were near the dining room) so we all slept really well. The room itself had a small TV (we didn't use it), tea & coffee making facilities and plenty of wardrobe space.

The bathroom was slightly dated but all functional and clean - a small selection of toiletries was provided. There was good water pressure and a slight wait for hot water in the morning but this wasn't a problem.

The hotel has a nice secluded garden (see the photos I've uploaded) and as it was the summer, we sat out here for most of the afternoon before the wedding. A word of warning if you need a taxi to go anywhere - book early and try several different numbers!

Breakfast had several options - one of our group even mixed it up a bit and had hollandaise sauce with her full English breakfast. The staff were very attentive and all really pleasant. They were also very knowledgeable of the local area and surrounding towns.

Overall, were we ever back in the area, we'd definitely consider staying here again as it's a good find with great staff & service.
