“Cheap and cheerful”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 January 2014

This pub has improved a lot since my last stay about 5 years ago when it was unrenovated and poorly run. The accommodation is still basic, but has been renovated and for the price its hard to complain. The rooms are neat and clean, but with no character or comforts and only have shared bathrooms. There is a sink and a kettle with tea/coffee in the room, but no bedside lamps, no TV, no radio and no alarm. Its just a place to sleep really. The bedding was fine but the mattress was really hard.

My room was at the front of the building so it was very noisy with the great Western Highway out front and the train track across the road. Forget sleeping in. This was OK for a business trip where I was in late and up early, but for a holiday it would suck. Rooms at the back would be much better.

On arrival there were no pillows in the room. When I asked at the bar the barmaid said "What room are you in". When I told her she said "oh that was me". I said "you took my pillows?" She said "yes, they're in my car". That made me laugh so much that I got over any problem with it and was happy enough that (clean) pillows were quickly supplied.

Overall I found the staff to be very friendly and efficient and the pub to have a good atmosphere, plenty of interesting local characters and tourists to talk to. The bistro was crowded for dinner, its cheap and the meals are fairly simple but very good for the price. They don't do breakfast, but there are a couple of very good cafes in town within easy walk.

This is cheap and cheerful accommodation. If you don't expect any more then its great.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back will be quieter

We stayed at the Gardners Hotel for 1 night in a double room with shared bathroom.

Pro
New and clean shared bathroom
Half the price of any other accommodation in town
Friendly manager
Bar attached had cheap dining options. Steak w fries for 10$

Contra
Room was very noisy (highway and night trains)
Staff at the restaurant was unfriendly
Room was very, very basic

Overall
The room would probably get 2 out of 5 but because the bathroom was new and the accommodation very cheap it is 3 and a really good option if you are on a budget

Tip
Book online as it is 10$ cheaper and ask for a room not on the side of highway and train.

I booked out the entire pub for the weekend.
When we went the renovations of the accommodation were half complete, all the rooms available had been refurbished and were very nice.
My group found the staff quite helpful and the facilities very good.
The breakfast was very ordinary, but considering the price, I don't think we could have expected more.

Overall the Gardners Inn provided good standard accommodation at a very good price.

I notice that the last 3 reviews were all poor, but were also all from the same group! A pity that one bad experience can have such a negative impact, because our experience was good.

Myself and a group of friends stayed there on a Friday night we arrived at about 10 pm and met with Mark the manager of the hotel. He wasn't the friendliest to start with. we went to the room and dropped our stuff off. we were staying in a family room and paid in full in cash when we checked in. We went down to the bar I ordered a drink and the money was snatched out of my hand the the change thrown back at me, we went on to spend a few 100$ on food and drinks. At the end of the night we made our way back to the room. We had been in the room maybe 20 mins until Mark the manager decided to bang on our door shout at us. He told us in a very rude manner to either shut up or get out . He approached the situation in a totally unprofessional manner. I will never stay there again or would I recommend anyone else to.
Also the family room bathroom is so small so if you did have children you would find it very difficult to bathe them .

Room Tip: DON'T STAY HERE- if you cough in the night you might get kicked out for making noise.

We stayed for one night in a family room. We experienced a fairly frosty reception from manager Mark, but the staff at the bar were happy enough to take our coin at the bar, however as soon as we returned to our room with slightly louder voices on a friday night, the manager knocked at our door and immediately threatened to kick us out! The manner in which he dealt with the situation and the insults he threw at us were appalling. If he had been composed enough to just ask us to quieten down there would not have been an issue.
It was the most inhospitable "hospitality" I have ever experienced! What a joke!

Room Tip: The staff are so rude I wouldn't bother.

Myself and a group of my friends decided to stay in Gardners Inn for a night before going to visit the caves and also see the Blue Mountains. We arrived at 9.30pm and met Mark the manager and checked in, paid the money ($175) for the night for a family room, went up and put our stuff in the room and came down to the bar for some drinks.

From the start the bar staff except one young girl who was serving were so rude. There is a red head woman behind the bar and I couldn't get over how rude she was to us from the start. My friend ordered a drink from her and she snatched the money out of her hand and actually threw the note change back at her....great start to the night!

The night was great and drinks were served to us by staff and also the manager Mark until 12.30. Mark had become increasingly agitated as the night went on but continued to serve us drinks which is why the next incident is so hilarious.

The five of us returned to our room with two people that we had met in the bar for a few drinks before bed. We knew that there were other people in the hotel but Mark had informed us on check in that he had put us away from the rest of the guests (rest of the guests being an understatement as there seemed to be no one in the establishment either when we checked in or when we checked out). Anyway we kept the noise to a reasonable noise level before there was a loud banging on the door.

There he was as angry as could be saying that he didn't even want to book us into the hotel and that we could either go to bed straight away and make no more noise or he would give us a full refund and we could leave the place right then and there and sleep in our car....it is 1.30am.

Not only was he completely unreasonable, rude and just a general p£ck - he approached the situation in a way that makes me wonder how he is allowed manage anything let alone a hotel. We were so glad to get out of the hotel this morning and will be making sure to tell our traveler friends to not go near the place and wanted to warn other potential guests about the hotel.

Price is ok but seriously rude staff and better make sure that you don't breath loud at night time or you will find mark at your door telling you to either be quite or else sleep in your car! A complete joke of a place and shocked that this is what he would consider customer service.

As titled - avoid this place at all costs! You were warned!

room was basic and not very large but clean and with a nice retro design.
value for money is very good.
