“Mountain Lodge - Caves House”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2013

As part of a group of 6 , we stayed at the historic Caves House. However, we stayed in the Mountain Lodge section and it very good. Each of the rooms had a king sized bed and a well set up kitchenette. Although the rooms were oldish, they were clean and comfortable. Each had it's own ensuite.
It is separate to the 1890s Caves House but was ideal for our one night stay. The main building had an old world charm but shared bathrooms.
We visited the bar and had dinner which were excellent and very reasonably priced- considering they had a captive audience. Drinks were likewise reasonably priced. The main restaurant was elegant and also reasonably priced.
A most enjoyable stay in a very pretty area about 3 hours west of Sydney. To drive there was reasonable but the last 40 ks were windy and narrow.
Checkout before 1145am to avoid taking a much longer trip back to Sydney as the short way is closed from 1145 to 1300.

Room Tip: Choose if you want rooms with ensuites or go for the old world charm with shared toilets and shower...

Dear holidays2407

It always nice to hear that all of your travelling party enjoyed their stay with us here at Jenolan Caves House.
We do have a wide range of rooms availble both in the Caves House itself - a mixture of ensuited and non ensuited rooms. To the Mountain Lodge which as you mentioend if fully self contained. To our Gate House - which best described as back packers accommodation and finally our Cottages.
You are right we do restrict access out via the Grand Arch to allow for the tour buses coming into the hotel.

We do look forward to welcoming you back to Jenolan Caves House in the near future.

Regards
Leanne

We spent one night at Jenolan Caves in a Mountain Lodge Family Room. The room was spacious with lovely large windows and had all the facilities we needed (we were on the second floor looking down on the main Caves House) . We took all of our groceries for dinner and breakfast and the kitchenette was quite adequate. The bathroom and some of the soft furnishings could do with an upgrade but it was all clean and functional and didn't bother us. All the staff from "check in" to Tour Guides were all so friendly and helpful and clearly loved this special place. As it wasn't a busy time the Barman in the upstairs bar kindly made my daughter a free non alcoholic cocktail and decorated it with all the trimmings - she just loved it! The caves themselves were amazing - I can thoroughly recommend "The Extended Orient Tour" and even the Free Nettle Cave tour was fabulous, some great walks in the area also. It is a wonderful place for children and adults and a must see. We will definitely be back one day!

Dear JaLa2012

Thank you for your feedback, it is always great to her the the team here at Jenoan Caves were friendly and helpful. Its sounds like your daughter was treated like a princess. I agree the Orient Cave Tour is amazing - well to be honest that "Amazing" is the one word I would use for all the cave tours.

I hope to welcome you back soon to Jenloan Caves House.

I spent 4 days at this great hotel. The heritage and and history of this hotel and the surrounding area is amazing. I stayed here while I was going to the Bathurst 1000. I enjoyed my stay so much i intend to go back and take my wife, too see some of the caves and enjoy the quietness of the walks and scenery. I would highly recommend this for young and old single or families as a great way to learn about how the physical geography of Australia is so different from the rest of the world and incredibly special.

Dear Duncan R

We always appreciate such wonderful comments.

I too agree that there is so much to do and see here at Jenolan Caves - obviously the caves, the wildlife and the history of not only the builidng but also the area in which we are surrounded. We do have something for any age to do or see here.

We look forward to seeing you again in the near future.

Caves house is an experience within the delightful caves precinct. It is charming and so well located for the walks and cave tours. I have been here many times and just love it. Caves House is old and looking 'tired' but that is part of the charm. The heating is run using the boiler which is turned off during the day, on a cold wet day when you may spend some time in your room it's very cold so if you're coming by car maybe bring a fan heater which is also useful for heating the bathroom! We stayed in the House itself in a deluxe room which has tea and coffee making facilities but no frig and no phone or TV (a real Old World experience). If you want these you can stay in the motel style rooms detached from the House but very nice. There is a warm log fire burning in the communal lounge room and the dining room which is very cosy. The evening meal in the dining room was delicious and there are bar meals available as well,

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms at the front of the House have a bay window which catches lovely warm winter sunshi...

We were a family of four that booked in here and we booked 2 rooms. When we walked into our rooms we realised we actually could have booked one room as one of them was quite big and had one double bed and 2 singles, but no harm done.

The hotel is beautiful from the time you literally drive through the cave to enter and arrive at the picturesque exterior. The rooms may leave a bit to be desired and the bathrooms were shared, but not crowded or far from the rooms so really not an issue.

Breakfast buffet was good and filling, but doesn't change, so after a few days you will grow tired of it. We also had dinner which was delicious, but got a bit pricey. It's best if you just enjoy and lose yourself in the experience. If you are going to do a few of the cave tours and some of them run for hours or even all day like we did this option is best. If you are only going to do one or two short tours then you can stay elsewhere and drive in for the day.

Being on property at night was cool and was a nice experience overall.

What an amazing place Jenolan Caves is. The exciting and very pretty drive in (a little scary on the road!) then the drive through the Cave to a picture perfect winter wonderland.

We popped down to explore the Caves and decided to book back in when they said they had room for the Yuletide Dinner and visit with Santa in the Cave and then space for us all to sleep.

The room in the Mountain Lodge (I think that's where we were) was lovely. Best.Bed.Ever!! Comfy, warm, cozy and with glass on the ceiling! Never ending hot water and a cute kitchenette.

Santa in the Caves was amazing, then the dinner following was fantastic! Music, trees, lights and the best mulled wine ever. Great food and great atmosphere.

We had the loveliest sleep ever and have I mentioned the bed was amazing?

Then breakfast the next morning was lovely. Variety and fantastic service.

All up, expect a historical stay. The buildings are lovely and very old. The cave tours fabulous. The freezing temperatures added to the experience.

Go with an open mind and enjoy. But not too much, I hope to book us back in next year!!!

Room Tip: We staying in room A5 which was the top floor (with stairs). Lovely views and quiet!

My partner and I booked a mountain lodge room on a Sunday for one night. Upon arrival we were breathtaken by the beautiful surroundings. The hotel itself has a beautiful charm with open fires and victorian decor. We arrived at around 11am and our room wasn't ready so we went for a drive for 2 hours. When we came back to check in, they said they had not received our booking (because we booked through wotif) and they were short staffed so they changed our room to an 'in-house' room. We thought this would be fine until we saw our room. The in house rooms are very small and old fashioned with NO tv, kitchenette, king bed or bath tub. The room we were supposed to get had all of these features so I asked reception if they could change our room. They said they had a slightly bigger room available but we would have to pay an additional $55. (This room still did not have the features we paid for). At this point we were exhausted and fed up. We had booked a temple and baahl your for 4pm, so the reception organised for housekeeping to clean our proper room while we were on the tour.
The tour was amazing and the caves are spectacular.
When we returned our room was ready. It was much larger and very comfortable. It was well heated and the shower was great.
We chose to have diner at the bistro. Meals were very nice and had average prices, around $25-$40.
We had the buffet for breakfast. A little pricey but the food was ok.
Overall, it was a great getaway despite the booking hiccup and I would visit again.
