The Dover Hotel has an illustrious history as a weekend getaway venue for Hobart residents. A rambling traditional venue, it is prettily sited on Esperance Bay, accessed via a winding highway drive through dramatic Huon country. I was given a front en-suite unit with photogenic outlooks across to Faith, Hope and Charity, the three small offshore islands. Accommodation is cheap, clean and cheerful. The bar area is spacious, with picture windows commanding water views. It is easy to while away laid back afternoons over a few Tassie beers in the company of character locals. I chose a pasta dinner in the evening, which arrived as a generous serve in a flavoursome sauce. The hosts are friendly and relaxed, and maintain a cheerful presence. I used the Hotel as a base to explore the southern Huon, and this worked well. As a pub-style food and shelter option, this is an inexpensive and comfortable way of exploring deep south Tasmania.
