“Just home after a great week-end away”
Reviewed 7 November 2011

We stayed 2 nights in one of the upstairs apartments that overlook Pirates Bay. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony and sipping our wine and beer as we listened to the waves crashing onto the beach below us. This was of course until we went into our corner spa for a lovely warm bubble before going down to eat.

The apartment is basically set up with the lounge, dining and kitchen area all together which works well. There is a washing machine/drier in the kitchen as well which I though a little strange at first but worked quite well. There were 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with 2 singles. However, I believe you can get these with 2 sets of bunks or 2 doubles as well.

It takes awhile for the hot water to make it to the upstairs apartments but once you get used to this it is not too bad. There was a vacume but for the little quick tidy ups a broom would have been great. The other interesting thing was no tongs in the fully equipped kitchen. I forgot to mention this when I checked out so if the Staff are reading this perhaps give this some consideration if you think it would benefit your guests.

We ate at the restaurant and found this to be great. Food was delicious and the bottle of wine to accompany was only $14. The pool looked lovely but it was a little too cold for swimming yet. Just below the pool was a bbq area and small child's palyground.

We loved every minute of our stay and are hoping to encourage our friends to come away with us next time we stay.

Room Tip: The rooms that look newer and are separate from the main hotel are newer and lovely to stay in.

We stayed in September at the Lufra, Eaglehawk Neck and had a wonderful time. The meal we had in the bar downstairs on our first night was simple and delicious. Our room was clean and impressive for the price. Staff were soooo helpful and polite. The kids playground needs a little bit of updating but the pool area was clean and lovely, I can't wait to go back in summer! I highly recommend this accommodation and assume any negative reviews must be due to previous owners.

Room Tip: The family room was great but next time I will try out a cabin.

Most other reviews of this property read terribly, but we must have lucked out and got ourselves a decent unit. Our unit was at the front, overlooking the bay and was modern and well-equipped. Dishwasher, dryer/washer combo in the kitchen, lovely open kitchen/dining room. Balcony with table and chairs and a great view. We didn't use the restaurant, so can't comment there. Large bathroom -only complaint here was the water noise when showering or flushing, really noisy. 3 tv's - teenage kids appreciated this. We can't complain on our stay, but can understand that what's advertised isn't necessarily what you will end up staying in. I DO make sure when I book that I'm persistent in knowing what I'm getting for my money, not leaving it to chance. Close proximity to the Port Arthur site and Tessellated Pavement etc. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: We've found a lot of places have an 'old' and a 'new' section. Make sure you ask...

I have just read the previous poor reviews of the Lufra. My sister and I recently stayed 2 nights on a wotif deal. On arrival we noted that the fridge in our single twin room was not working. We were immediately given a double room. We woke to spectacular views. We found the room well appointed and very clean. There has obviously been some recent make-overs. We enjoyed nice Tasmanian wine and mouth watering steak, cooked perfectly medium rare. This hotel is situated perfectly to explore the Tasman Penninsula. Recent new management has it back on track. I would definitely stay again.

We booked on the net to save money and really got value for money. The staff were really friendly and I gather that the hotel has new owners so please ignore any negative comments. It is slighty shabby in parts but they have great plans for the place. We only booked a double room but the apartments looked top rate. If we'd been staying longer we would have opted for one. Whilst the room was rather small it was very well decorated (real wool carpets). The bed was really comfortable even though it was only a double which we'd booked. The ensuite was also small but lovely. The tap had been plumbed the wrong way round but once we'd worked that out hot water was abundant. We had the most amazing view of the bay. We are not ones to spend any time in a room, It if for sleeping & showering. We headed downstairs to the bar and restaurant. A glass of wine, from a limited but good selection, was ordered along with dinner. This was well priced and delicious. I had lamb shanks (note the plural) and the best mashed spud I have had since my grannie made it and wonderfully flavoured and presented vegetables. My husband had a Rib eye steak and he was just as impressed.
We were given the choice regarding which room we wanted to eat in so ate in the loungeroom which overlooks the ocean. Just magic. We'd spent a very cold and soggy day at Port Arthur finding convict ancestors and the wonderfully warm log fire and comfortable furniture prooved to be sheer bliss. We were completely at home, shoes off, watching the news and meeting other travellers. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Room Tip: There is a large selection so choose carefully, if you want space and seclusion take the apartment...

My partener organised our romantic getaway staying here last saturday evening. When we went up to room 2 double "ocean view" I was totally shocked to find a mould ridden, dusty 70s room falling apapert, with wiring coming off the roof and a shower so gross that I couldnt use it, and I just spent 3 months backpacking south east asia, so that is saying something. We didnt have austar and the view was of the carpark, no spa. So where the heck did these photos come from? The property has lovely new cabin like apartments which have just been built along the beach up the front, so if you book a family room or cabin then well done, enjoy your 4 star accomodation. If you book a double or twin room - you lucked out. This is a different hotel facility and would get 1 star, in fact it needs to be closed down. This is false advertising, it ruined our trip and we will be taking it up with bestwestern.

Room Tip: only get a "cabin", or to be safe, just stay somewhere that is not falling down.

We stayed in a two bedroom upstairs apartment and could not fault the service provided or the room, with beautiful views over looking pirates bay, the apartment itself was very modern, clean, well heated or air conditioned, full kitchen, dish washer, mini bar, washing machine & dryer, very comfortable beds, & spa bath I would recommend staying here to family and friends and will return in the near future.
