“Unexpected Gem that exceeded expectations!”
Reviewed 7 July 2013

We rocked into Hamilton in the late afternoon and were a bit dismayed to realise that - although there were a number of accommodation options, the chances of getting a meal looked grim. As the only other option was trying our luck further down the road, my partner suggested we try the local pub where both bed and dinner should be available....and so we stumbled upon the Hamilton Inn. The rooms are small, but quaintly furnished and comfortable. Our room was under the gabled roof so headroom was a little low in some areas but we soon got used to that. The bathroom was very small but the water was hot and it was a pleasant surprise to have an ensuite! The beer and wine selections are limited, but perfectly adequate for an enjoyable evening and the pub food was excellent! Well prepared and presented and the portions were very satisfying. We also got chatting with another 'blow-in' couple and ended up having a fun evening making new friends and getting to know the publican, John, his delightful family and assorted pets. John and Gina also have a mineral, spring and rainwater bottling business. Keep an eye out for it and make sure you try some while you're there.

Stopped at this lovely place after a long day of traveling, delightful evening chatting with the guests in the dining room, and the friendly banter with barman. Great meal and a cosy log fire. Stayed the night in a quaint and cosy room on the 3rd floor with sloped ceilings, comfy bed, warm and own ensuite. Lovely breakfast the next morning, highly recommend if you want a place with character and charm

Our first night in Tasmania is a memorable one in this gorgeous old pub with a barman full of stories, a host that makes you feel like part of the furniture from the moment we arrived. The weather was stinking hot when we got there and sitting outside with a chilled glass of local wine amoungst the friendly locals, and tranquil landscape was great. The host opened up her loungeroom to us to curl up on the couch & watch a dvd before heading off to a comfortable bed. The room we stayed in was a couple of flights of stairs up, which wasn"t easy for our 80yr old mum to climb, but the comfort and generosity of this beautiful inn , lined with walls and tables full of memorabillia was indeed a god experience. Our room had a single and a double bed. It had a loft window and a cute bathroom. They let us store our perishable foods for our journey in their fridge, and breakfast the next morning was set in a decadent dining room filled with antiques. We found it a most enjoyable stay, and would definately go there again. Price was also very reasonable for 3 people.

I am amazed by the great reviews for this pub. We found the host completely disinterested and couldn't care less. Although we were the only people there for a Sunday lunch, we had to find our own menus and water. Two of our party had the fisherman's basket, which was OK, one person had the mixed grill, which she also quite enjoyed, but my husband's steak was appalling. For $30 it was quite inedible and he left most of it on the plate, due to the quality of the T-bone steak. It was cooked blue, as ordered, but full of gristle. They had two choices of beer, Cascade Draft on tap or in the bottle. Their only wine was Gossips. The decor in the pub was great, it could be a fantastic place to stop on a drive and this type of endeavour should be encouraged, but compared to Hotel Bruny, where we dined last weekend, for similar prices, this was definitely not value for money.

We didn't stay here just had dinner and if you like fish then go for the local salmon!
Great pub, very friendly, where you can sit and have dinner in the main pub area and chat with the locals at the same time.
Pub owner was very nice and attentive.

Been here twice before, John and Gina are just the best Hosts. This time I brought my new Bride, we stayed for 3 nights and had a great time. The meals are fantastic and reasonably priced. The rooms are very comfortable and clean and it is like sleeping in the past. This time they had a new barman, he kept us very entertained all evening with his humour and travel advice. This is without doubt one of the best pubs in the country. Do come you will enjoy it.

Bit surprised by some of the reviews below as we had a very different experience recently! Arrived by bicycle from Hobart at 4pm to find hotel closed up until after 5pm despite being told it would open at 4. Finally a gentleman who had been standing nearby during the whole hour we were waiting let us in and my exclamation of "oh you are open" was met with a frosty response. It seemed like the owners had not had the best day so maybe we caught them on a bad one but not a great reception! Interesting old hotel but shame the communal areas were dark and dusty as this could be made into a lovely heritage hotel. We were served some tasty salmon for dinner and our bedroom was comfortable and clean. I wouldn't say not to stay there - but take a sense of humour and open mind if you do!
