Reviewed 4 November 2012

The reviews of this accommodation vary greatly, clearly different expectations and perhaps different units. We stayed in 'The Willows' for two nights at the end of an anti-clockwise two weeks around Tasmania - wonderful to pull up short of Hobart after coming through from Strahan in rain.
Out of Hobart, yes, but an easy drive of an hour to the airport and 20 minutes from MONA. A pleasant country town - find Pulpit lookout for views (across the river) and the point where the little Lachlan River enters the Derwent for platypus and other wildlife. A great walk built along the river bank.

Our unit - The Willows - was very comfortable and with subtleties of design which grew on us - not a classy first impression wearing off quickly. Very well equipped, quality appliances and with nice supplies of all the basics of cereals, bread, milk, eggs, juice... (Replying to the reviewer who was disappointed at supplies:– after circling Tasmania, surely she, like we, was travelling with favourite foods?)

BUT please note, this unit, with internal steps up to bed, down to bath and kitchen, IS NOT for people with mobility problems.

Room Tip: We chose The Willows as having more facilities than the riverside studio apartment which was a littl...

Such a great cottage. It had everything we needed - from bath robes to modern bathroom. I would highly recommend this place and you have a wonderful views of the river. They even have cereal, toast, milk, different condiments, tea and coffee in your room. Great value for your money.

I was disappointed from the start. Was looking forward to our river view when we were down graded from that to a room with a view of the main road and no continental breakfast as stated. Very upset, it was my birthday holiday.

The one bedroom apartment was comfortable, and well appointed. We stayed three days and never saw service . No towel change, no garbage pick up, no floor vacuuming, no toilet paper replacement, No way to light the barbeque. At $155 nightly we really expected more

Obviously people have a different idea on what 'luxury' really is - maybe the hosts should travel around Australia and see what for themselves where they are missing the mark. These 'cottages' were advertised as being luxury but fell far from the mark. Having generic slices of bread in lunchbox containers in the fridge was not really appreciated, although there was a good supply of cereals. We stayed in a two bedroom unit, with a small flat downstairs which was occupied by people that stayed up late and were quite noisy while congregating at their back door to smoke which is situated under the main bedroom window. Lucky we were very tired. The view of the Derwent River was beautiful, but the hosts have locked the sliding door off the living/kitchen/dining area because they have not put a deck out the back yet to enjoy this view??? You would think that would be a priority. I also ended up with 2 spiders on me, which I killed - it is good I am not scared of spiders, but maybe the units need fumigating. We had just spent 2 weeks travelling around Tassie and had stayed in luxury cottages and cabins that had the feeling of being very special. At Shingles, we felt like we were staying in the granny flat of relatives and were happy to drive away the next day.

Chose Shingles Cottages to be on Derwent River. We stayed in The Willows, a one bedroom cottage. Fitout of cottage was outstanding. Free car parking in front of door. Airconditioning good. Large lounge area with large leather couch, coffee table, spare single bed, a good TV, CD and DVD player and CDs and DVDs. Rare attention to detail shown everywhere. Lounge area steps up to bedroom area with large comfortable double bed and there is a suitcase rack. Off the bedroom is a large bathroom with a wall of cupboards, there is a very large shower, vanity cupboard and 2 guest robes supplied. The kitchen is very nice. A generous amount of tea, coffee, breakfast supplies left for guests as well as fresh milk, juice, bread and butter in mini frig. There is a Miele washing machine in kitchen and 2 airers and iron and ironing board in bathroom cupboards. The crockery and glassware is beautiful and a table and 3 chairs in kitchen. The lounge/bedroom are in line with each other and bathroom and kitchen are on right side of them but down 3 steps to bathroom from bedroom and one step from lounge to kitchen. Outside kitchen is a small patio with outdoor setting and barbeque for The Willows. All private. The whole property is beautiful but the large L-shaped boardwalk area right on the river front was perfect for drinks late in the day. Veronica and John are helpful, attentive, lovely and unobtrusive hosts. Excellent. New Norfolk nice town and many antique outlets and area around it is very interesting. Bothwell, Mt. Fields worth visiting.

It was only by chance that my Mum and I came across Shingles Riverside Cottages and we were so happy. John and Veronica were very friendly and accommodating. They had one Cottage Left (Paddy's Flat) and they encouraged us to go and have a look before we committed. It was exactly what we needed and wanted with a beautiful riverside view (what a bonus!). The studio room was modern and comfortable with a bed, two lounge chairs, table and two chairs, kitchenette, television, large bathroom and a continental breakfast.

One very minor thing was that one of the visitors staying in the Cottage above stomped hard on the floor as they walked and therefore we could hear the walking above (but only sometimes). This was only a small thing though and did not take away from our great experience.

Thank you John and Veronica for a great stay! We hope to be back in the near future!
