“Great location, friendly staff and excellent kitchen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2014

Stayed here for one night as part of a photographic tour of Tasmania. All arrangements were made by the tour but our rooms were ready on arrival and the process was seamless.
Many of the rooms face the mud flats and the estuary with excellent wildlife all over the place.
The rooms are comfortable ( bed was great) and quite spacious, ensuite basic but clean.
We ate in the main dining area and had the pleasant surprise of discovering that the new chef was an old friend from Subiaco, Perth WA.......he had relocated to St Helens after running a very successful restaurant in Perth, and he is a very valuable addition to the property. They are very lucky to have him.
The food was excellent, perfectly cooked and everyone in our party was very pleased with their meal choices. Things got even better the next day at breakfast with personally prepared hot choices for our table (group of 10) and the scambled eggs were to die for!!
The staff were mainly young people, obviously learning their trade, but were in the main helpful and willing to please. For a holiday resort in a quiet place like St Helens, the service and amenities are quite good but one has to realise that it is not easy to find experienced staff in such places and a little tolerance and patience goes a long way. I am not aware of the standard of other 'hotels' in St Helens, but have been advised that this is the best available.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the mudflats and estuary, great views

We took a weekend package which included accommodation, breakfast, and a main meal in the evenings for both of us! Our room was nicely furnished with a balcony overlooking the water which was a nice setting. Unfortunately on the Sunday afternoon there was a power failure, and all the eateries in St Helen's had to close, but we were informed that evening meals would still be available at the Resort. We must commend the staff especially the chef who in the end was cooking with the light of a torch, and the meal was still well presented and excellent. It was a busy night as people staying in other accommodation within the area also dined in what was believed to be the only place still operating! Great to know that even in such a dire situation the Resort was keen to make sure that their guests were well cared for! Well done to all involved!

We stayed in Tidal Waters Resort early March and I must preface my remarks with the following comments:
I take any reviews I write very serious but at the same time try not to be too negative or unfair.
Because we take a lot of notice of Trip Adviser reviews before travelling and booking our accommodation and it is for this reason I try and have a constructive and balanced review.
Anyway he we go! Our stay was for one night only and when booking in at reception it seemed disjointed. While the girl was booking us in the manager raced up to her and said there was someone waiting at the bar needs two wines. Can you attend to this.
She gavel us our room key and a map and rushed off to the bar to serve the wines. I went to park my car and in all fairness the girl came back and explained where we were best to carry our luggage in from.
We went to our room and it was very tidy and clean. It overlooked the mud flaps and there isn't much of a view but the room is spacious and clean.

Our dinner was booked for 6.30pm we went down to dinner at that time and was met by the same girl who seemed to have multiple roles.
When she checked us off she got confused and said someone else has booked the table we were supposed to be on. Then she said no "hang on it's Sunday" and then said she got mixed up with our room number and the table number. No problem that was soon sorted out.

I ordered a dozen oysters and asked were they the local St Helens oysters. She was unsure and said yes from down the road and pointed in a direction. They were very nice.

We also ordered a garlic bread which came out very dry.
I ordered a seafood ragu for my main which was pretty ordinary. It had the smallest scallops and prawns I have ever seen.

My wife wasn't sure what to order and asked what the fish of the day was. The waitress didn't know. My wife then asked what the fish was in the fish and chips meal and the waitress looked blank and after a short while said it was Cobbler. I had never heard of this fish but have since found out it it and Australian Catfish caught in the estuaries.
The fish and chips were just OK, the batter was soft on the fish and the chips were a bit soft.

My wife had the New York Cheesecake which was recommended by two of the waitresses and it did not disappoint. It was very good.

I've had a lot worse as far as the meals go but the point I wish to make is the menu should be simplified and cut down to basics in line with the cook's capabilities. He is not a chef and the front of house waitresses are not aligned or synchronised with the kitchen.

We watched from our table several times where people were either waiting to get served at the bar or someone was at reception waiting to check in while the waitress was in the kitchen or the bar.

The room were noisy with someone upstairs above our room walking on the floor which you could hear through the night.

Breakfast was a very basic continental one which couldn't be faulted other that the coffee pot running empty because again the waitress has multiple duties and was all over the place.

It must be said all the staff were very nice and seemed to try hard but seemed to jump all over the place.

Would we go back? No we thought it was very expensive for what we got in return.

The place is dated and needs a lot of work as far as the staff go. There are good things about it also. It is very spacious with three large separate retreat areas where you can sit quiet and relax. Rooms are a good size except for the very small shower. The hallway creaks and although we never heard anyone in the hallway through the night, in a busy time it would be heard.

Looking around St Helens I would say it certainly appears to be the best accommodation but that doesn't say a lot.

As I said in my review title, they are trying hard but have a long way to go. We wish them all the best.

This is a comfortable good value for money place to stay. Staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. Separate, spacious guest lounges enable relaxation outside your room.. Overlooks the mudflats that are alive with all kinds of bird life - eagles, swans, white faced herons and probably more. Not sure about the other accomodation in town but this is good. Get a waterfront room. TV sets could be a bit larger than your average computer screen but that was the only detractor. Give it a try.

Booked a two night getaway with some friends, rooms were good , great place to relax and very good service, however the outdoor areas of the hotel let It down, lovely views over the water except for the unkept grass areas outside the rooms with lots of overgrown blackberrys.

They have a very large deck area outside the restaurant, which requires a upgrade, would have been a magical place to hang out in its hay day.

The biggest issue we had was with the restaurant menu and high prices, we did no eat in the place once during our time there, for a resort in an area full of fresh seafood, the menu was more suited to a working man's pub rather than a resort by the sea and expensive by local standards, we had great meals with good prices within five minutes walk of the place, there was never many people eating in, that should tell them something, bums on seats is what pays for the upkeep.

Room Tip: Waterside rooms have the best view, best look around the web, some booking website can give you a w...

Room was dated, however clean and had everything you need in a hotel room. Found service efficient, even got room service out of their normal hours no hassell. Would probably request an up stairs room as we had noisy neighbours! Overall good experience

2 adults and 3 children in one room. Was a bit tight. Beds are only double, so very uncomfortable when you're over 6 foot. Beds were softer though which was a welcome surprise.
Resort was clean and tidy but we wish we had looked for something better.

Room Tip: 5 people do not fit in one room. Ensure you get adjoining rooms.
