“Enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2013

A lovely stay. Our husband and wife hosts were very friendly and hospitable. We enjoyed hearing their stories of their travels. We dined in the restaurant and it was just wonderful. A meal to remember. We really enjoyed our time here.

I stayed here a few weeks ago and thought it was great!

The property is (as the name suggests) the old cable station that used to facilitate communications with the mainland and has been converted into a small, boutique B&B with only a handful of rooms. The property is set on a rugged piece of land just outside of Stanley which is a bit windy and as a result is quite open and barren land. This makes for a stunning setting, particularly when you sit outside around sunset and stare out into the Bass Strait.

I stayed in the Telephone Room which has a queen size bed and is very comfortable. The room itself is rather large and very adequate for two people. It also had a small dining table and some comfortable lounge chairs, with an outdoors setting for two on the small verandah attached to the room. The bathroom was also spacious, with a separate shower and claw footed bath.

The hosts at the Old Cable Station were really lovely and happy to assist with their local knowledge of dining options and attractions. There is a restaurant in the main building with a very contemporary fine dining menu. I didn't eat there (as I chose to head into Stanley to explore) but I was very tempted by the wonderful menu.

A continental breakfast is included in your nightly rate and this is provided to you in your room upon arrival for you to prepare yourself in the morning. Whilst it is simple, most produce provided is local and of a very high quality.

Overall, I found the Old Cable Station to be a very peaceful, relaxing and intriguing place to stay. I just wish I had of stayed for dinner as well!

Room Tip: The Telephone Room was very spacious and beautifully decorated. Great for a couple.

We stayed in the Postmaster's cottage, which was incredible - we could easily live there in spacious comfort. Our hosts Euan and Jacqueline (and their lovely dog Eriska) were so welcoming and friendly and made our stay a memorable one. Our dinner at the restaurant was spectacular (congrats on the Restaurant of the Year award guys!) and the surrounds were stunning. We loved our stay and will most certainly be back.

I stayed at the Old Cable Station on the 1st day of my Tasmania trip with my parents, we shared the Telephone Room, the room is very large with a Queen Bed and large Single Bed and a sofa, so plenty of space for 3 people. The only slip up was that there were only 2 chairs at the dining/breakfast table in the room so we had to take shifts. Other than that we could not fault the room, its amenities, the fridge stocked with the freshest produce for a lovely breakfast. We had a table booked for the evening meal, the restaurant is stunning, the video footage and memorabilia around the room showcasing the history of the Cable Station was a great touch and very interesting. My father was particularly interested having worked in the Telecom Industry (as I was). The food was excellent, Euan has a real talent and is clearly very proud of his dishes (which he should be), presentation, flavours, everything was faultless. Jacqueline is a great host, very friendly and we would definitely make regular return trips if we lived closer. The Old Cable Station deserves to be a success.

Stayed for one night, mid-January 2013. The property is located in a very quiet, rural setting a few kilometers outside the villiage of Stanley. The accommodation is a nice blend of historic character and modern comforts. We were in the telegraph room which, for two people is massive; with a bedroom, large ensuite with spa, sunroom with woodstove, and kitchen / sitting room.
The high points of our stay were the dining and service courtesy of hosts Jacqui and Euan. Euan is the chef and has given the restaurant a well-deserved reputation for excellence by focusing on Tasmania sourced ingredients. The quality of preparation and presentation of our dinner met all of our expectations and then some, service was efficient, un-hurried and personable.

we stayed one night in the telegraph room which is very well appointed and had everything we need. The standout for me was the dinner in the restaurant which shouldnt be missed. The entree for us was a carrot soup which i will neevr forget and i find myself craving still 2 months on! I will try and replicate it in winter but know i will not acheive the flavours! The hosts are great we had a good chat to Jacqueline at dinner about their move here from Scotland. their dog is very friendly also and a welcome visitor to our patio.

Stayed for 2 nights in December. Stayed in the Technicians Cottage and it was amazing. The first thing I noticed was the old switchboard as you enter the cottage. Really brought back memories of my first job (showing my age!). The cottage had everything we could have wanted and was very cozy.
As for the restaurant - you just have to go there. Whatever I say won't do it justice. The food was amazing and the service from Euan and Jacqui exceptional. They would have to be the best hosts we have ever come across.
The breakfast supplies were also exceptionally good with preserved fruits to die for!
Hope to return in the near future.
