We stopped by the museum with hopes of finding some information about Tasmanian ancestors who lived in the area in the 1840’s but came up empty. The local genealogist was not in that day, but the person working in the museum was able to help us check the local records and point us in a couple of directions that could be helpful in our search. It’s worth taking the time to wander each room and learn about the local history (some quite tragic) and the natural flora and fauna of the region.

The museum is free, but requests donations. Many exhibits are related to the military, but my favorite was the old school classroom complete with a “properly” dressed teacher at the front.

Zeehan on the west coast of Tasmania has the West Coast Heritage Museum and Swansea has the east coast version. However the east coast version is far smaller without the outdoor area with various equipment and is effectively just a few rooms of memorabilia tacked onto the visitors centre. There is nothing here that is not in almost every other small-time local museum in Tasmania - the standard nods to the convict days and the obligatory World War One displays - perhaps with some World War Two stuff tacked on.

Having said that you'd be a fool not to pop in there since it's for free (gold coin donation) if you were, err, swanning about Swansea.

Great little museum. Lots of history of the people and the area. Very detailed. Great old schoolroom set up! Derek who works (or volunteers?) was quite knowledgeable and a king and interesting person to have a chat to while we were there. Gold coin donation for entry.

This is a nice little museum with local social and natural history. We enjoyed chatting with one of the volunteers about the town fathers and some of the historical houses around the area. It's free to enter and they have a spot for a coin donation, which helps the local historical society with the upkeep of the museum. It's right across the street from the IGA store, so we found it a convenient stop on our way to Coles Bay to stock up on groceries and learn a bit about the area.

If visiting Swansea take a half an hour or so to connect with the amazing history of the district. Followup a visit with a visit to the local cemetery to really make these connections.

This is a fantastic place to view the towns history. They have the names of fallen and returned soldiers from the district, info about the families that settled the town, plus an old school room.
Must visit. It gives an insight into the names of places around the town including a few of the family owned wineries.
