“It could get 5 stars but......”
Reviewed 16 November 2012

This is probably the third or fourth time we have stayed in this hotel. We always end up here in the winter, so my impressions might be quite different if I stayed during the high season.
Basically the hotel is clean, comfortable and convenient to the nearby towns. We chose it for its location in relation to Sandusky.

The room is pretty comfortable, I don't know how they heat the place but we never had to turn on the unit under the window, and even with sub 30 deg temps outside, the gas fireplace would quickly heat the room hotter than we prefer. The fireplace is a very nice touch by the way. I did like the bed and the linnens are clean and fresh and free of annoying fragrances. The room also has a small refrigerator, a microwave and small coffee maker. The refrigerator is also free of all those expensive items which some hotels fill them with and basically forbid your used of the fridge.

There is a restaurant (or two) in the hotel and we had breakfast there once but I was not particularly impressed and the price was high. There is also a store (or two) associated with the resort. One is actually quite nice with good quality (albeit expensive) stuff.

There is a pool and hot tub, they are indoor, so you can enjoy them in the winter as well. There is also a fitness area. This area is a bit shabby and the whole place is a bit dated. The parking seems to be plentiful (at least in the winter when the place is empty).

I have walked around the property and it is nice with nice walking paths, views of the water, etc.
However, it is too dated. The TV set is an old tube set and there is no WIFI. However they do have wired internet and you can get a cable from the front desk. They say they sell them, but I just asked for one and they gave it to me. The bad part is that the internet connection is really slow. Forget doing anything in facebook or downstreaming anything.

I would return and probably would recommend it because of the positive aspects. However, I'd caution not to expect an up-to-date modern facility.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with fireplace if you stay in the cold season.

Sawmill back in the day was a great resort, it was a destination for specials occasions. Unfortunately, the age of the property is showing in just about every way, the halls and rooms are in desperate need of maintenance. I have visited the property annually for the last 9 years on business, and I honestly can't say anything has changed.

The property is very large, many rooms and large meeting spaces are available. Indoor pool and hot tub, outdoor pool, game room, fitness center, and many spaces to just sit and relax are available throughout the property.

The actual sleeping rooms are good size, and I have never had an issue with cleanliness. The only issue I have ever noticed is a damp mildew smell present in a few rooms over the years. Some of the other reviews mention this as well. Beds are old and hard, TV is still the old tube. Bathroom is small but adequate.

If I found a good deal I would consider staying at Sawmill...otherwise I would probably pass it up.

We were in the area over the weekend for a Football Tournament. I travel for work and get to stay in a lot of very nice hotels and resorts. Yes, this one does appear to have a more "established" look and feel - but it was very warm and clean, the staff was friendly, it was quiet, and was the perfect venue for hanging out with the other families. The kids absolutely loved the pool. We were even able to coordinate a large screen TV to be brought into the "living room" area so we could all sit around and watch the College Football Games. Plus, there's nothing like coming back to your room and sitting by a fire when you've just sat outside for hours in 40 degree weather!! Looking forward to next year's tournament and stay at Sawmill!!!

Room Tip: If you have a larger family (we are a family of 5) spend the little extra for the larger rooms with...

iWe had driven by this hotel many times when visiting relatives nearby. We decided to stay there instead of with family. We were disappointed from the start. When calling to make the reservation, I was told that the person was very busy and would probably have to put me on hold.
Then when we arrived the reception desk was abrupt and not at all helpful...not even correctly telling us the best (nearest to our room) place to park. Service for breakfast was poor, although the food itself was quite good.

This is a lovely grounds and very serene. HOWEVER, if you have any hope of staying in touch with your outside contacts make other arrangements. There is exactly 1, yes 1 computer in the business center which was being hogged by some guy for a couple hours. There is very limited WiFi with even more limited cell reception. On another note the rooms are clean, the staff was very helpful and the food in the Saloon was good. If you want a dated decor, no access to the digital world and have time to be patient in the Saloon this would be a good choice for you. But as I said, there are other resorts nearby with better amenities for similar cost.

Worst hotel ever. We had stuff taken out of our room most likely by the cleaning staff, but the staff did nothing about it. Terrible customer service. Front desk staff and management were incredibly rude. Rooms were old and not real clean.

I spent 2 nights here. The place is sprawling. It has a very rustic feel and supports that by only having wifi in the lobbies and lacking any cell reception in some of the conference rooms. The food at the Saloon is very good. The staff is friendly. My room was clean and well maintained. The refrigerator cost an extra $10/night and was very tiny and beat up. The exercise facility was nice and they have an indoor pool. The music that was playing was from the 80's. Vending machines are coke. It is really pretty. A great place to go if you want to get away from it all and need to be forced to do so but it isn't a bargin for price. If you are an internet junkie (twitter, facebook, email, etc.), this place will drive you nuts.
