Review of The Kent Stage

The Kent Stage
Ranked #3 of 15 things to do in Kent
Attraction details
Reviewed 1 August 2013

The Kent Stage just oozes with nostalgia. Whether it's the worn out seats of an abandoned movie theater or the acts that thrilled us decades ago, there's just something comfortable and familiar about this place that makes you feel at home. Even the somewhat musty smell helps take you back to the 50's and 60's when the theater was in its heyday. Old acts include rock and rollers of the 50's, British invasion acts from the 60's, folk artist from way back when to the present and Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturday night at midnight. It is a great eclectic place to spend and evening. Don't expect anything new or up to date. But the "time stood still" charm is worth the sacrifice of modern comfort.

This is an older movie theater converted to a live performance stage with outstanding sound and excellent seating. It books a number of first rate folk acts or their equivalent. If you like folk music (in the broad sense) you are more likely to hear your favorite artist here than anyplace else in the midwest. Check out their website for upcoming acts. It's close to cleveland and certainly worth the drive. Beer and wine available. Parking is easy and free. I'd rather attend a show here than almost anywhere in Cleveland.

The Kent Stage offers some great musical venues and has gotten more diverse over the last few years. For me, the main distraction is the facility. It's dated, dirty and unappealing. With all of the improvements in Kent, it has become even more of an eye sore.

The Kent Stage is a great environment to see some very good music. They have beer and wine available for purchase on site. Tickets for the different acts are reasonable in price.

I attended two concerts at The Kent Stage last week, and a total of four this month. It's amazing the number of Grammy-winning and Rock Hall of Fame acts that have been brought to this intimate 600-seat theater. In the last three months alone I've seen Todd Rundgren, Tab Benoit, the Steeldrivers, Dave Mason, Great Big Sea, and Phil Keaggy/Glass Harp. Excellent acoustics, deficient A/C, and friendly staff. I already have tickets for upcoming shows with Poco, Pure Prairie League, and Hugh Laurie.
