I agree with the previous review. We were there the same weekend and our Cottage also clean. I stayed in one of these 40 years ago and expected them to be much more run-down then they were.
Clean, spacious (loved the huge screened in back porch). The cost cannot be beat for what you get. I agree, the placements of most the outside grills were...strange

Read the trip advisor reviews after making our reservation for cottage 34 and began to think we'd made a mistake. So we decided to pack plenty of cleaning supplies, linens w/sleeping bags, pillows and plug-ins. We even brought some small rugs. The purpose of our stay was to run in the Hocking Hills Indian Run Sept 21st. Cottage 34 will sleep 6; (2) twin beds, (1) full bed and (1) sleeper sofa. Everything was clean inside the cottage (vacuum and broom in the closet). We had no issue with any part of the cottage. The stove, dishes and associated gear are adequate (even a Mr. Coffee pot and microwave). TV was good enough and screened porch, enjoyable. Perhaps other cottages are not as clean? Although there is a kitchen in the cottage, you may decide to eat at the lodge if it is open, “in season”. The food there was very good on Friday night, but we stuck with our plan and used the BBQ grill outside the cottage on Saturday evening. Aside from its beginning located awkwardly on the other side of the cottage from the door…it met our needs. Staying in cottage was not glorified camping. We tent camp often and this cottage is nothing like camping. Air conditioning, heat, gas fireplace, hot shower…we will visit again. The only interaction with park staff was driving up to the window at the Campground check-in and telling the lady we were checking in.

Room Tip: The cottages at the end of the road have more privacy as they are offset from each other. Cottage a...

We have stayed at a number of private inns/cabins/chalets in the Hocking Hills area over the years; this was our first stay at the Hocking Hills State Park "cottages." It was ok for a try (we stayed in cabin 22, nicely located at the far end of the cottage area), but I don't expect we will be rushing for a return visit.

On the good side: location is very close to Old Man's Cave; the area is close to the lodge where there is a gigantic pool (very clean, but closes at 7pm); you can find very reasonably priced and unexpectedly good meals at the lodge; the cottages are a bit off the beaten track so not a lot of outside public traffic; cottages include a nice sized refrigerator, coffee pot, toaster, microwave, and small stove; the price is significantly less than private inns/cabins/chalets; cottages are air conditioned for those muggy, hot summer days.

On the bad side: cottages don't appear to be the cleanest (I brought disinfecting wipes and wiped down several hall walls, all light switches, and all cupboard/door handles); each cottage has its own picnic table and grill, but no campfires are allowed outside of the "community" pit; no soap or shampoo included so be sure and bring your own; not a lot of kitchen towels and dish cloths provided, so bring a roll of paper towels with you; utensils and kitchen supplies are provided, but quite limited in number and variety (what is provided I was sure to clean in hot, soapy water before using). I also brought my own set of sheets and tossed the comforter off the bed to the corner.

So, all in all, the state park cottage served its purpose for us which was a short get-away that didn't bust the bank. We got what we were expecting, and we were fine with support the state park for our stay. It is a far cry from a 4-star hotel, so if that's what you are after, better stay in one of the $250-300+ per night private inns/cabins/chalets that dot the area.

We recently held a family reunion in four cabins at Hocking Hills State Park. The cabins were very similar to those in Hueston Woods State Park where we previously stayed (and probably to the other cabins in other Ohio State Parks), but more nicely decorated. 4 or 5 people can easily be accommodated in the two bedrooms. The cabin was clean when we arrived, except for under the bunk beds. Kitchen facilities were fine and there was plenty of cupboard and hanging space (except we had to ask for hangers). There is a very nice playground in the cabin area and the lodge and pool are within walking distance. There are a few downsides. The cottage furniture looks like it was bought at a garage sale and was very uncomfortable. Luckily, the porch furniture was easier to sit on. The cottage has no telephone or WiFi (the only reliable WiFi is at the campground check in building) and it turns out that the area is a cellular dead zone (except for Sprint users), so we found communication difficult. That was a problem for us as some people needed to keep in touch with home base and we also needed to communicate among ourselves when out on activities. Finally, park signage could be better - there is just a small roadside sign that points to the cabins and lodge. All in all, though, as a previous reviewer said, if you are looking for an economical way to visit the beautiful Hocking Hills area, these cabins fit the bill.

We were very disappointed with our cabin. I would not consider it clean by any means. It had a nasty moldy smell as if it had been closed up for years. I could have gotten over the smell, but overall it was extremely dirty. I do not think anyone had vacuumed or swept the floors. There was dirt all over the bathroom and kitchen vinyl floor. I made my kids wear flip flops in the shower! There were cob webs all over. I could deal with a bug here and there, but these were years worth of cob webs!
I expected it to be out of date as the previous post stated, but there is no excuse for being dirty. We stayed in a smoke/pet free cabin. I cannot fathom how nasty it would have been in a smoking/pet friendly cabin.
It was really classy how they had a note and a trash bag on the table for your dirty towels and linens. They requested that on the last day, you bag the dirty linens up and put them by the road. They put on the note something along the lines of do not include comforters or bed covers in the bag, because they have a different process for cleaning them. In other words, they do not clean them.
I would recommend either paying more and staying somewhere nicer or camping. This cabin just felt like glorified camping. At least if you are camping, you are sleeping in your own dirt. If you are to stay, I would recommend bring air freshener with you. We purchased several Glade candles and they seemed to help the smell.

We were looking for pet friendly accomodations to stay with another family in the Hocking Hills region. At first, the cost of the state park cabins seemed to be in line with the other cabins in region. But as you factor in pet fees, and additional persons, the price skyrocketed. Basically, the price we payed for two nights at the state park cabins covered only a night in the others. So decided to make the budget conscious choice. The cabins are very basic and dated. Was a bit tight quarters for two families, but manageble. Would have nice to have extra bathroom (only 1). Some of the kitchen supplies were in short supply, extra dishes, utencils, etc. The oven did not work first night, but they did come in and repair for our use next day. As I said, nothing special about the place, so if you are just looking for a nice, clean and covenient place to use as home base when exploring the Hocking Hills region, this is place for you. If you want more of the bells and whistles and willing to pay extra money, I would look elsewhere.
