“Our new restuarant of choice”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

We stumbled upon The Riverbarn quite accidentally whilst out on a family drive and looking for a spot for lunch. As soon as we stepped through the door, my husband and I, together with our sons of 5 and 7 were made extremely welcome. The food was a sensation. Well presented, fresh and imaginative and the atmosphere was friendly and cosy. The setting is tranquil and pretty and the front of house hosts, also the owners were an absolute delight. We will be back soon!

Found this while looking for places to stay around Stonehenge and what a great find it is, even if it's a little tricky to find with a mobile-phone sat-nav as there is very little signal in these parts!

Ian and Jill are very friendly and informative, while Ted the dog is just very, very friendly!

There are only three rooms, and we stayed in the Woodlands room which is lovely. A very cottage-like feel with a comfy bed and a good sized bathroom - the shower is VERY hot though!

We only stayed one night but would have loved to spend longer in this beautiful part of the country. Lots of walks nearby and the owners are happy to recommend places of interest and good walks.

Will definitely be back when we explore Wiltshire again and will try the food next time

Room Tip: wifi patchy and no mobile signal, be prepared to be cut off from the rest of the world, which is no...

stopping on chance on my wife's birthday, three of us dined excellently at lunchtime. Really very very happy... we are lucky enough to live in a village with an outstanding restaurant (and good value with it) so we have a benchmark, and The RiverBarn didn't let us down.

Roasted hake for me, Rib eye steak for the lad, and a fantastic veggie sharing plate not shared by the birthday girl, all washed down with a bottle of muscadet, and a couple of cokes for the driver. We hadn't planned on desert but a peek at the menu soon changed that so it was in the same order as above a mouth drooling cheeseboard, lemon possett and creme brulee. A couple of coffees to finish off brought it to just a tad under £100... fantastic food, lovely restaurant, friendly staff - who happily also suggested other places to eat nearer our neck of the woods that we didn't know of :-)

what is there not to like? 10/10

Didn't expect to find such imaginative, creative cuisine in this little restaurant /pub in this very small town in SW England. Both the fresh pea and mint soup and the filleted salmon were outstanding. Sat outside during a brief, rare appearance of the sun. As always in this part of England, the restaurant personnel could not have been friendlier. Definitely a keeper.

Are you confusing The Riverbarn with somewhere else? We had lunch there today and as usual were warmly welcomed to the attractive restaurant. We had a delicious meal (from both the a la carte and light lunch menus), all beautifully presented.

We often drove past the Riverbarn, but had never stopped until this 6th August 2013. It was during lunch time, However a member of our party only wanted a cup of tea and cake, while others were happy with a choice from the lunch menu... Nothing was a problem we were given a warm welcome and shown to a lovely table over looking the garden. On our vintage round table there was a small pot of sweet peas just completing the atmosphere and décor... The lunch was beautifully presented and very tasty, while the person that wanted tea and cake was presented with a large slice of coffee and walnut cake... The owner was a happy and welcoming man. I will be calling in again on my way to Somerset its a distraction from the A303

We were touring the area and thought this place would serve as an OK base from which to travel around the region. For some reason we decided to book a meal at the B and B during our stay. This was on a Tuesday evening. We were told on more than one occasion by the owner that Wednesday was their day off but they would be happy to accommodate us for the Tuesday evening in the restaurant. I'm not sure if it is good business practice to make your paying guests feel beholden to the hosts by making out that they are actually doing you a favour.
The background information provided to us was interesting. Although the Michelin trained chef (?) - I think this may mean a chef who had worked in these Michelin restaurants - anyway he was not working that night, so the B and B owners prepared the meals. But assurance was given as the B and B owner stated she had worked in catering for over 30yrs.
Out came two plates with lettuce, tomatoes and a few bits of tuna. I thought they were starters but no, these were main meals at some ridiculous price £10 - £11, maybe more.
My rack of lamb and assorted veg just tasted weird. This was priced at £16.
So in conclusion - my wife is usually very good at checking out places via reviews prior to booking and had she checked out cyrabourne's very accurate review of the place then that would have had those alarm bells ringing immediately. In fact we would probably have tried the pub in Fonthill as recommended.
So, back to the conclusion - over priced, small portions of not great food, years and years in the catering industry may have assisted in extracting the most profit from the most limited portions and quality possible (i.e. on unsuspecting guests) but they do not appear to be geared up for repeat custom - so do not expect genuine warmth or hospitality. Too much show and not nearly enough substance.

Room Tip: You may have trouble finding a room here that does not have a musty damp smell.
