“Not excellant (yet), but ok”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 September 2013

My partner and I have stayed in some beautiful B&Bs, that were very reasonably priced. And so perhaps our view of what is "excellent" is distorted.

We stayed 4 nights at Lancers House, and while we DID enjoy our stay, we felt the numerous "excellent" rankings on Tripadvisor were misleading and would disappointment well-travelled souls.

Here are a few of the good things that we appreciated:

- accommodating hosts: Nic and jayne are very willing to help, they're attentive and quick to find the answers to any questions you may have.

- a good breakfast centred around their homemade bread and their own free-range eggs. But to make the breakfast excellent and above average, freshly squeezed orange juice, as well as more fresh fruit and nuts would help (there was a fruit bowl with a few bananas and an apple, but this area is renowned for berries and other fresh fruit like plums).

- good walking area. Just a few meters from the house you will find a bridal path, in one direction, and small country road leading through truly beautiful farm lands, in the other direction. You will need, however, to go a short distance along the very busy A30 to get to these.

Here's why we feel the ranking should be average:

- unreliable hot water. While Jayne was very apologetic and we understood her explanation that there was a full house with everyone trying to get ready at the same time, we feel hot water is the one basic for a place to be ranked excellent.

- no cupboard with hanging space from dresses and other items (you hang clothes at the entrance on the coat rack, which feels disorganised for stays longer than a single night), although they provided a chest of drawers with three drawers and a few drawers in the smaller bed-side tables.

- we booked an executive superking room. Compared to other places we've stayed in, we felt the wording and pricing left us expecting something much larger than it is and perhaps better presented. While it had three windows and was clean, there was really only enough space to walk around the bed if you don't include the narrow entrance hall and the decor is a little impersonal. So good, but not exceptional.

- little but important details like ensuring the toilet seat stays up (my boyfriend had to piddle with one hand holding the seat up), or providing enough towel space in the bathroom for two people (two hooks on the back of the bathroom door would quickly solve this problem). These are such tiny issues that are easily fixed, but make a difference. I'd suggest that Nic and Jayne sleep at least one night in each of their rooms, pretending to be guests with packed bags, to help them understand some of these little frustrations.

- The shower fixture was also unusual - you can't regulate the strength of the flow of the water, and to get to hot water you swing the handle through cold first, so to switch off the water you're forced to finish with a blast of cold water. It does, however, provide a very powerful blast of water.

- The location can't be helped but we felt they're trying to create the impression of a country-retreat. While the eggs and home-baked bread help, the A30 runs directly outside the house and you can definitely hear the traffic most of the day, early morning and evenings if you have a street facing room (despite what some of the other reviewers say). In fact when trucks pass, the room vibrates. It means the establishment is better suited to businessmen staying one night, rather than those looking for a get-away in the country.

I hope greatly that anyone reading this will take it in good spirit - Nic and Jayne are doing their best, but we also feel that guest who have waited all year for an "exceptional country escape" and paying their hard-earned salaries will be disappointed.

We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and sorry that we did not live up to your expectation. We are always striving to try and surpass expectation so this is a bit disappointing.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review and we will take on board those points with merit and try to make improvements. I should point out as I believe you may have been misled by someone, that Wiltshire is renowned for it's pigs and pig products such as Ham, Bacon, Pork and even Lardy Cake rather than berries and plums.

However, we do grow our own fruits and these are used in the numerous homemade jams, preserves and deserts we offer, but we do try to keep the fruit bowl topped up at all times.

Thank you again for taking the time to leave this review and we will look to make some subtle improvements.

After a long journey - coming from Germany - we arrived rather late in the evening, but we were welcomed very warmly so that felt very comfortable right from the beginning of our stay of 5 days. We were overwhelmed by Nic's and his wife's kindness and their service always ready to help and inform us when we were looking for interesting places to go. This B&B is ideally located to go to different places like Stonehenge and Avebury , Salisbury, Wilton House, Stourhead Park, Bath etc. In this beautiful countryside we could relax a lot and enjoy a tasty breakfast with homemade bread, butter, lemon curd etc. as well as a very nice dinner. We also appreciated a lot that Nic and his family tried to run their house in a way which was as ecollogically friendly as possible. So all in all we had wonderful holidays at Lancers House and hope to be able to come back one day.We definitely can recommend this B&B.

For our first wedding anniversary I wanted to give my wife a secret, relaxing weekend away but not too far from where we live. I read all the reviews, spoke to Nick and booked for Lancers - we were not disappointed! Best described as a Boutique Guest House, Lancers offers all we needed for a thoroughly pleasant base to stay and tour the Salisbury and Shaftsbury areas. Dinner on our first evening was a real surprise and bonus - as others have noted the home-cooked food and local ingredients make the meals special, and such a choice! Breakfast really gets you set up for a busy day! Great place and really recommended.

Room Tip: We did not experience traffic noise, so rooms in front give a good view, especially of the Fovant Ba...

When we first arrived, we were made to feel most welcome by Nic. We had everything explained to us and then were handed our keys. We were upstairs in the main house. The room was clean, the bed very comfortable and the shower hot. There was sufficient space to stretch out and also hang your clothes. Nothing was a problem and no effort was spared in making you feel welcomed. You only have to ask.

The rooms were serviced each day.

We found out later that his wife Jayne was the one rustling the pots and pans in the kitchen. The dining room seats 30 and there is a delicious menu (catering for all types) as well as a "specials" board to choose from. Most of the ingredients are locally sourced. My suggestion would be to leave space for an anti diabetic & weight watcher finale in the form of their home made ice cream or their over indulgent sticky toffee pudding...... Really 1st class!

The breakfasts are tasty, there is a wide selection to choose from and the service always very attentive. They always go far and beyond. You don't leave wanting.....

Tea and cake are also served in the lounge.

Many thanks to Jayne, Emma, Charlie and of course Nic in making us feel very welcome and certainly "home from home" where we were able to completely relax & recharge the batteries. We look very much forward in returning next year where we know that we could chill out without a care in the world.....

Room Tip: The rooms in the annex are quieter....

We stayed only one night but we really enjoyed our stay at this pleasant House. Nicholas and jayne are very gentle and attentive. The family room we stayed in was very comfortable and clean with a lovely modern bathroom and a fantastic shower!!. But, best of all was the home cooked food, really delicious!!! Breakfast was very good, with a large selection. ideally located for Wilton, Salisbury and Stonehenge.Overall a very very very enjoyable stay.

We booked this as an opportunity arose for a weekend escape and to be honest we would normally have found a hotel but there were none available. Lancers House is a large B&B and the first impression was good. Easy to find on the A30 outside Wilton, nice room, lovely countryside etc. They do dinner as well as breakfast, but we didn't book for the first night as we assumed there would be space. That was our first and fatal error.

We hadn't realised just how good the food was, Saturday night was rammed and so we had to eat in another, local pub, and wait for breakfast to find out what we'd missed. Home made bread, (check out the chilli and onion) free range home grown eggs, homemade sausage bacon, hash brown, beans, tomatoes, with option for lemon curd, jam, cheese, homemade croissants, the list is too big for here and was just fabulous.
We had to wait for dinner to eat there again and once again no disappointment. Home grown peas and mint in the soup, lovely rich fish pie and the amazing home made ice cream, (3 scoops of heaven, £4.50) ended a lovrly day exploring.
So in conclusion. A little pricy for a bed, fantastic breakfast, and a dinner that guaranteed that we will stay here again and make sure we book to eat both nights!

Thank you so much for your lovely comments and we are so sorry our restaurant was full on the first night. We are delighted you enjoyed our food so much and we plan to show everyone just how we do it, with a range of cookery courses, starting with the bread making courses in September.

Warm welcome, clean and comfortable bedroom. Ample parking and free wifi. But, best of all was the home grown, home cooked food. Ideally located for Wilton, Salisbury and Stonehenge. Beautiful morning views of the sunrise over the hills. Able to see the Fovant badges on the chalk downs. Would definitely stay at Lancers House again and would recommend highly to family and friends. Thank you Nik and Jayne for a lovely weekend.
